If you’re talking about right at the end with their section leader, what makes it more impressive is that he was using a marching euphonium, and being the slightly larger cousin to the baritone, it is more mellow and usually has a lower pitch. Getting it that high is real damn good.

There's a few Players I know who can do It but The obvious reason you rarely see it happen during Fanfares or Shows is because yes it's cool and all but it just never makes it across the field people won't hear it so it's just pointless and A heck off a lot easier to miss the note than to just play a few notches below it and be heard and have a great tone lol

My 14yr olds band teachers know he's got natural talent when he picks up any instrument and they needed a baritone trumpet player so they asked him to learn it. He spent 6 hrs after school from 330-9pm working w his band teachers learning it yesterday and practicing his marching band position and steps using it and his poor arms this morning could barely lift the thing when I dropped him off for 740am marching band practice before school. God bless him and his teachers though, all working so hard w it. Good to see young men committed to bettering themselves and mastering their instruments!

Thank you for sharing that. My 12 year old grandson is starting band this year and the teacher said the saying that he had a natural talent when he blew through the instrument. She needs brass desperately she said, so I don’t know if that’s just her recommending one because he also was looking at the saxophone.

The restricted tone is because baritones and euphoniums tend to fight back with air resistance when you try to play loud. These guys were blasting, which is a real chore to do on those horns. Speak of those horns, some of them are marching-style baritones, and some are marching-style euphoniums. The baritones have a brassier, more direct sound than the euphs. Even with good tone, this section would probably not blend very well.

FYI the other name for the baritone, euphonium, literally means "good sounding.". Let's try to keep that in mind in the future :)
@MasonAtha8 жыл бұрын
Baritones and euphoniums are completely different instruments, even though they play similarly. Besides, while their playing may not sound pretty, most of the notes are there (except the few pedals and high stuff), and that's what a marching band needs.
@kingsley42618 жыл бұрын
Mason Atha no, they're not....
@MasonAtha8 жыл бұрын
KDS Euphonium has an extremely conical bore, while baritone has a cylindrical bore. Calling euphs and baritones the same instrument is like calling trumpet and flugelhorn the same instrument.
@kingsley42618 жыл бұрын
Mason Atha yes that is a difference and it gives the euphonium a more mellow sound, but in reality there is not a big enough difference to make a difference. When I was on crown we always referred to them interchangeably because there is no difference that matters, it's pointless, they're so close to the same there's no real need to differentiate, who cares
@MasonAtha8 жыл бұрын
KDS You're right when it comes to differentiating between them in a conversation, but the difference isn't pointless. You can't play baritone on a euphonium part (or vice versa) in a British brass band, otherwise your sound gets lost among the four or more tubas. In marching environments, tone isn't as big a deal so the instruments aren't given different roles
