Hi Andy. I've had the pleasure of playing with Lizzy on many occasions, and I played with Philip on his last gig alive sadly. We were very good friends. The offbeat or "pushed" chords as they liked to call them, are a feature of a lot of their songs. The whole harmony guitar thing happened accidentally for Lizzy. They were recording and Brian was "tracking" a part that Scott had played, but he came in at the wrong place, and it was a perfect harmony line to Scott's part, so they started working on it and the rest is history!

G'day Andy, mate, you are definitely better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick! How about a lesson on Whiskey in the Jaro! Not that insipid Metallica version, but the Thin Lizzy with the amazing Eric Bell, and how the hell does he get his tone! Eric just about defines the adage, tone is in the fingers! Goodonya mate!

I saw them open up for Queen at the old Boston Garden, I believe it was in 1977. Up until that time I was only familiar with The Boys Are Back in Town. Phil Lynott took center stage. He used his pick guard as a reflector for a spot light that deflected off it and into the crowd. It’s the first time I heard Cowboy Song, Jailbreak and The Emerald. I bought the Jailbreak album the next day. I consider still one of the best Rock albums of all time.

Great playing and explanation of one of their signature songs. Here in the US there was only a short time when Lizzy was being promoted by US radio stations. Maybe '76 to ' 77, then it just dropped off. Don't understand why, so many other bands at the time were Lizzy fans, they toured with Rush originally . There's no lack of talent and song writing. Thanks for taking the time to break down the song.
@Timinator62
@Timinator62 3 жыл бұрын
'76 was such a strange time for Music, "The Boys are Back" was a Top 40 Pop Tune...however Thin Lizzy was far from a Pop Group. Jailbreak got way more airplay on the "Hard Rock' stations that played Zep, Heart, Rush, Deep Purple, etc. No Top 40 station would play another cut off of the Jailbreak Album or any following Albums, they were played on the Hard Rock Stations though. '76 was Disco, Top 40, Country, Jazz and Hard Rock and Radio Stations stuck to their Market Group's Playlist. In just couple years "New Wave" would come along and have their own "Play List" Stations. Sorry for the long winded comment, but I grew up in LA and my best buddy was studying "Broadcasting" he DJ'd/Produced/Managed Stations all over the LA area...oh yeah, we still had AM Radio then too.

For years I heard this song and never realised how much nuance and groove was in this song funny enough the band where gonna can this for the jailbreak album until a manager told them not to. More impressive is that at the time of writing this Brian Robertson was 19 and Scott Gorham was a convert from bass and had only been playing guitar seriously for a couple years. Both where largely self taught with guitar. Just shows how much skill and creativity they had.
