This is one of the greatest games in history! A masterpiece of strategy, it is taught in chess schools as the perfect example of how to fight against an isolated pawn. Karpov (the true teacher of Kasparov!) is yet to be surpassed in his thorough understanding of the game. He is the deepest and most complete world champion and his games are very educational. He also happens to be a good, kind, and modest person with a wide variety of interests. I think the time has come (especially since you have done a recent series on Spassky) for a really long series on the greatest of them all - Karpov the Magnificent!

Just to note that this is a world champion Karpov is giving a positional lesson to. Karpov has completely paralysed him and Spassky just had to wait until Karpov finished him. Very impressive indeed.

A lot of people say Karpov was a defensive player (sort of like Petrosian) but upon closer inspection, I think its more accurate to say he was more of a patient attacker, who was very good at controlling the board and accumulating small advantages.

I've been so impressed lately by how much information you manage to cram into such a short video, all the while keeping it so easily digestible. I mean, you went through an entire game, explained the main motifs and sidelines, then went back for a short lesson on the opening, all in less than 18 minutes. I can't begin to imagine what you covered in 5 1/2 hours.

This game is analyzed by Soltis in his book “100 Trade Secrets” as part of a standard priyome against the isolani, by trading off minor pieces before tripling the major pieces against the pawn. Thank you GM King for your explanations, clear as always.

When Spassky lost to Fischer the soviets took Spassky’s lifelong trainer, livo nei, away from him and sent him to Karpov’s camp just before their match. The message was clear and Spassky’s passive play made perfect sense.

I very much like the "do not hurry" principle that Karpov used, much like Petrosian. If your opponent can't do anything, what's the rush? Another good example is Petrosian - Karpov (USSR Championship 1973); the only game that Karpov lost the entire year. Also maybe a fun one to cover (even though is a Queen's Indian, not a QGD).

Other than being a positional player and being good defensive players. Karpov was nothing like Petrosian, Petrosian used to play very passively , in his games against Spassky and Fischer he out of the opening used to get difficult positions. Karpov plays the opening better than anyone and can pllay both sharp and solid.

Karpov has always been underrated as a WC. Kasparov has been lionized (rightly so) as one of the greatest players yet their h2h score in WC match play is only 73-71 in favor of Kasparov. Maybe it's Karpov's dry positional style but he was an excellent tactician as well. Check out the wild game Karpov - Zaitsev 1970 from his My Best Games book. Another enjoyable game (#40 pg 210) from his book was also against Spassky: 1975 Spartakiade where Karpov was white vs QID.
@zaksmith1035

I think he's one of the greatest WC's, up there with Kasparov, Carlsen, and Fischer. I think for the most part it's almost impossible to say who was better, as there is so much progress in general knowledge of the game between even one generation and the next.
@Qhsjahajw
@Qhsjahajw 3 жыл бұрын
tbh he should be above Fischer because of higher consistency, longevity and multiple WC. If Kaspy wasnt born Karpov would have been no. 1
@TheChessRunner
@TheChessRunner 3 жыл бұрын
@@Qhsjahajw the only plus point is the difference that Fisher has some arguments for nummer 1 spot where Karpov has really none. I like the Idea of Karpov as number 3, but well earned 4th spot isn't bad either and I guess you will have a lot more consensus for that
@Qhsjahajw
@Qhsjahajw 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheChessRunner Karpov was no.1 for 10 years and no. 2 for 10 more years. Karpov was a lot more consistent than Fischer. He has most no. of super tournament victories. At one time he was averaging 1 loss per year. He has had 6 WC victories under his belt(including FIDE ones when PCA existed). And also has highest super tounament average performance rating in 1994 Linares after Caruana's sinqfield
@TheChessRunner
@TheChessRunner 3 жыл бұрын
@@Qhsjahajw yeah in all those categories he is better than Fisher, but most or all are improved by Kasparov and Will be improved by Carlsen Fisher on the other hand has the highest peak ever reached/highest difference with number 2( I myself find it over estimated, but it remains undoubtely unique), and has arguments to his case for number 1, but in general by now the consensus is number 3

Great stuff. I would love to see Anatoly Karpov vs Artur Yusupov, USSR Championship Moscow 1998, the way Karpov dismantled the queen's gambit declined and the geometry of the moves and control of black squares is just astounding. I've been waiting for quiet a while for this analysis. Here is the game i am talking about: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJqtc3WXqNSIY8k If you do find time to squeeze this one into the Karpov playlist that would be amazing. Thanks!
