@@ghetoknight7801 This might be late but, generally knights are better than bishops in closed positions and vice versa, also look at which piece is the most defended and causing the most problems, and it’s usually quite obvious whether a trade is good or not. If it isn’t, then it probably could go either way and trading or not is fine. Also if you’re up material trades are usually good to simplify and get to an endgame

My first tournament game ever was against the Queen's Gambit. I was about 1000 strength then. I played the Semi-Slav without any prep (basically tried to play logical moves and ended up with a Semi-Slav). Huge fight. I got a passed pawn that I eventually lost, and we fought into an endgame with equal material where my opponent finally managed to get an unstoppable pawn on the 7th rank. We each had about 50s of time left. That guy won the tournament. I placed 4th by winning the rest of my games. It wasn't a very strong tournament.

A fun accepted queens gambit trap: 1. d4 d5 2. c4 d5xc4 3. e3 b5 4. a4 c6 5. a4xb5 c6xb5 6. Qf3 So here you win at least a knight (6. ... knight c6 7. Qxc6+ ) But most people will think they get forked after taking the knight and will just give up the rook. (You don’t actually get forked, black can play Bd7 and they attack the queen and defend the rook with their queen.) :)

The Queens Gambit is one of my favorites, honestly. You get so much space to develop. I’m aware it’s a gambit, it doesn’t always go as planned, but in cases like that I can always switch it up into a London-inspired system. Edit: the London switcharound can really throw people off in low 1000 elo, I’ve seen. They prepare for queens gambit, if they know the system, and the London is just a surprise that they don’t expect. I would DEFINITELY not say it gives you an immediate advantage, it’s just a small bonk on the nose to your opponent.

I mean like the purpose of it and its consequences. Tomorrow I'm thinking of fliping the board and see how to play against Queen's gambit. Thank you for your video!

Hey, Levy- Just wanted you to know that your videos have been super helpful to me in more than just a chess sense. I don’t mean to get uncomfortably personal but I think to help you understand I sort of have to. I’ve had mental health issues to the degree that I’ve had to take two semesters off from school out of the last three, I’ve been on a dozen (literally) prescriptions in the last year alone with three doctors and a therapist, so needless to say life has been trying and a bit crazy. When I found chess and your videos, it was a help though. When I’m up until the wee and not-so-wee hours of the morning trying to sleep or get my head out of those deep, dark places I seem to spend so much time in, your chess videos are distracting at least and even motivating at times. For a guy who can’t get out of bed a lot of the time that’s huge. I’ve wanted to reach out for a while now but I don’t really know how, you have such a following and I’m sure this will go to spam somewhere or get buried but in the off chance you see this on the video that got me into it all, I hope you hear me, from across the country, some dude you’ve never heard of much less met, thanking you and telling you these videos mean more than just pieces on a board, even to someone who will probably never break 1250. I really appreciate the effort and passion that you put into your content. Much love for the channel and for the Batman of the chess world. (P.S. I started learning this before the show dropped on Netflix, doesn’t that automatically make me OG or something?)

@GothamChess Thanks for the very helpful video, helped me understand the purpose of the good aggressive move e5 after 2. c4 dxc4 Also I see clearly the idea behind the very useful move cxd5 after 2. c4 Nf6 As black, I love to play the Englund Gambit, esp the specific line where after sacrificing a knight, a bishop and two pawns black gets to capture the white queen :)

I always play e3 but I think that's petty because it's for a trick for trapping the rook with your queen. I'm not a master but I think if chess principle says to gain control of the center then e4 is better.

If u r below 1400 play 3.e3. Because ur opponent might fall for the trap after 3...b5. Otherwise e4 is more aggressive.

after e4 I sometimes find myself wishing I had a way of attacking f4, especially if there is a knight sitting on it so I tend to go for e3, but I'm not much more than 1400 and a bit of a defensive sort of player....
