Thanks, coach, this is a very important subject. In theory if you get a short ball you have an advantage, but in practice it is very easy to mess it up if you don’t have proper technique.

Seriously great instruction here. There is a lot to what he said. I remember Peter Burwash in his book Total Tennis said most recreational players are out of control in the mid court. He was right, and this lesson addresses some of those things.

Great video once again. I picked up this swing at the net when I have to take a softer, low bounce. I'll try it coming in - teaching the exaggerated up swing might be easier if you start stationary fairly close to the net. Thank you!

Shamir seems like a fit player with solid strokes. It might help him to approach the short balls side on with a cross-behind step instead of running up to the ball and turning last second. Nik does it so naturally when he takes on a short ball. Nik as usual finds the best topics to make videos on!

I was wondering why I kept putting low short balls into the net, this video helped a treat (swing up on the same side of the racket - great swing thought 👍). I think this is why these videos are so insightful as Shamir clearly a good player but these are subtle tweaks (perhaps some not so subtle) that can help good club players improve

Very helpful instruction, Nik. I play with folks who are adept at drop shots and/or who hit weak, short shots and while I have the quickness to get to almost everything, at least half the time I have the same results as Shameer had early on in this video - I hit it into the net.

Might be your best video Nick. Thank you for your valuable advices. I’m trying to teach my daughter and she has some great ground strokes by now. Today she played a match against a boy her age (9). He was a good player but her ground strokes were better than his, yet she still lost because of him scrambling getting her balls back over the net giving her these short balls to “just” put away, but she kept missing the “killer stroke”. It ended up wide or in the net. This gave me a lot of inspiration to teach her how to avoid that. 🙏

It is so important to practice situations that you will encounter in match play. This is why real on court coaching is important. I always tell my high school tennis players that you have to practice the way you want to play. You got to do the drills to build your skills. The footwork and tactics in this drill have to become automatic. This is like training for boxing or mixed martial arts fighting. It becomes an instinctive reaction.

Very well explained lesson. It's harder than most think to find tennis coaches who actually know how to coach and change a student player's strokes. #1-The coach should fully understand how a particular shot should be executed and then be able to analyze in what ways the student's technique is wrong, and #2- Have the ability to explain, in an understandable way, how the student can change technique and perform the shot correctly and effectively. Finding a coach with these true tennis teaching qualities and abilities (real analysis and instruction) is difficult.

Why doesnt everyone start using UTR instead of this ntrp nonsense? I know what constitutes a UTR 4 or a UTR 8 or UTR 13 but its anyone's guess who really is a 4 or 5,0..nor why it even matters

Great video! My instructor teaches us that as soon as you notice a short ball, to approach with the racquet out in front (not swinging from behind like a normal forehand). Maybe if he had the racquet out in front and the did the vertical flip as described, it would be easier to learn. Since you're stopping mid swing and flicking up, taking the racquet back is unnecessary and wastes time. What you taught accomplishes the same thing, but it is hard for some people to stop mid swing, so this is an alternative method.
