I have been using this general concept for over 50 years. And that brings me to a funny story from about 50 years ago. I was playing Hammond organ in a trio where the other two instruments were drums and guitar. The guitarist was a much better singer than he was a guitarist. His forte was rock and not anything with complex harmonies. One of the hit records at the time was Going Out Of My Head which the guitarist sang beautifully. But he had problems with the first two chords… Cmaj7 and Cm7. Since I was providing the bass on the organ, I figured it would simplify his guitar playing if he just played the rest of the chord besides C which I was playing on the B3. So I got him to play an Em and an Eb chord. It worked great! That gig at that hotel ended after a year. I stayed in California and the guitar player headed off to Florida to join a group there. A few years later he told me about the problems he had when he tried to teach the new group how the song went Em/ / / Eb/ / / Fmaj7. The warning here is these are the shapes and not the chords.

I hope you ll do it again with a different theme/chords, because in the end it is about the practice done at home alone, and these last lessons were about that, so thanks again and again

I love the way these sound! So simple! This weeks example and last weeks “Someday My Prince Will Come” sound so beautiful. I can’t believe how much better I sound already! Thank you.

Thanks, Adam! You helped me finally understand this for good. One thing that hung me up a bit that I’d like to just put here for others to see was that for the minor 7 chords, you build it’s relative 6th chord in second inversion from the 5th of the initial Minor 7 chord, apparently. The other chord types are literally a 6th chord in root position built from the 5th degree of the initial chord you started with.

found this super helpful, thanks ! I just wish you referenced an easier key like C so I can work out the concepts better in my head and later work them out in all 12 keys
