That's a really nice instrument- it's very similar to the berimbau.

Yes. They belong to the same instruments classification which is Bow instruments. They have been found in many variations in southern Africa hence the belief that they originate from the region. Berimbau or rather "Okamburumbumbwa" its original Nguni name originates from the west coast of Southern Africa to include Namibia and Angola

@@qangiqangisounds That's the thing, I also can't find a picture for it but it's in the book :( this is the description of earth bow "The earth how also called ground bow or pit harp consists of a flexible pole which is planted in the ground. A string is attached to one end of the pole while the other end of the string is attached to a stone a piece of hark, or a small piece of wood which is then planted in a hole dug in the ground, thus bending the pole. The hole in the ground acts as a resonator and the sound comes from under the earth. This type of how is often used in ceremonies involving magic"

1st time I hear this description. I know though that before we attached the resonator in the form of calabash or goud, the bows were placed in a hole in the ground that acted as a resonator. That's the 1st way to play the bows before we realized we could use calabashs or any artificial resonator.

This is a really well made and well explained video. I'm really glad I found this. I've been looking into lesser known instruments from all over the world and it can be hard sometimes to find good explanations of how exactly they're played, so this channel is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

What made you redo your previous video on the topic? Also what kind of string do you use to string it? I have access to wood, and dried gourds, but I'm curious if regular guitar string will do the job?

Hey, it is similar to a berimbau, an instrument used in capoeira, so you can try with the wire that comes inside of a tire, it makes a nice string. Its not that hard to find
