Neck Shoulders

Howjadoo! Been taking a couple weeks off of covers to run around Arkansas with Western AF, here’s a mouthbow (no it’s not a jaw harp) rendition of a fiddle tune I picked up from the Surry County fiddle world, we’re not sure if the mouthbow is a west African or Native American descended instrument when its played in the southern mountains, but I picked up my style from fellow Arky Jimmy Driftwood, writer of ‘Battle of New Orleans’ among others, and a mouthbow player of several generations, enjoy! Original music including the song ‘Ira’ (featuring a Driftwood mouthbow piece at the end) available on Spotify and all other platforms, purchase at nick shoulders.bandcamp.com.

Man o' man. When my son was about 3 we caught Hun Huur Tu at the WOW hall in Eugene OR. We had the CD in constant rotation at the house. He didn't feel awkward doing his thing during the show and I had to walk him around the block when he got really spun up. Good times!

I can still remember my old friend Flouncin' Freddy; we were pumpin' gas down at El Sobrante Shell. His Mustang was his pride and joy, he liked to dance the Cowboy. He'd hang out at the Jack in the Box but eat at Taco Bell.

Very neat. I was looking up types of khomus (played in Tuva) yesterday and found one called a cha-khomus which has a mouthpiece that covers a piece of the bow string. Pretty interesting to see different forms and ways to play that sort of thing.

So it's like a diddly bow with the mouth as the resonator/modulator. The notes I hear being produced with the mouth over the drone are overtones. Mongolian throat singing produces the same effect.

The guitarists watching want to have long arguments about whether swapping out the peg for for a bone peg increases sustain, or the properties of a mouthbow built with 'tone wood'.
