The way varus w works is you cant activate it while he's charging q. It's really annoying but that's why at the end you thought it didn't go on cooldown when you missed.

bad clears at the start bc Q doesn't benefit from ap, makes him scale super well into late game but your first 10 levels in the jungle would be a pain in the ass
