How to Play Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver | MTG Alpha EDH

Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver can be built and played a few different ways. You can gain value with dimir zombies with more spellslinging, mill, self-mill with graveyard recursion or straight tribal--which is what I did. Going wide with zombies, producing tokens and working of the zombie tribal synergies that can produce evasion abilities and keep bringing them back from the dead.

Zombie Trailblazer is a great budget zombie. (Tap a zombie make a land a swamp) (tap a zombie give another target creature swampwalk)You can politic with it for other players giving one of thier creatures unblockable. use it to get a giant diregraf colossus or unbreathing horde through. It can also give someone a swamp while zombie master gives all your zombies swamp-walk.

And the threat of forcing them to float their mana, by turning all their lands into Swamps. :) Great card!

You should put accursed maurader fleshbag and rotbelly in no idea how muched that saved me in games. Also grave pact and carrion feeder are nice I have some counterspells too.

Careful with Shepherd unless you are running Gray Merchant of Asphodel. Its all players, not just opponents. I have a pretty busted Wilhelt deck and I do run Shepherd (for now)

I'm running grave pact and dictate of erebos find it a good way too keep people in check while sacrificing tokens

My pod hates Dictate. Great board control and I'm Dimir so I have Counterspell in hand waiting to protect against removal. Great card

More isn’t always better. U should lower ur zombie count and add more protection. U should also add wonder which will give all ur creatures flyings.

Does it work good without counterspells, interaction and low Carddraw ? Im playing it mostly tribal and many times a negate or counterspell saved my a**. The only non Zombies are : liliana, dreadhord General / Morbid Opportunist / Pitiless Plunderer / Puppet Stitcher / Orkish Boemaster / Gisa and Geralf / Mirkwood Bats / Braids / Roaming Throne

You can definitely lean into more counterspells and interaction. I did end up adding more counterspells overtime. It does well with the basic stuff like Cyclonic Rift and Mana Drain. Most spells are low to the ground and reducing the cost of zombies helps hold up more mana for what you want!

I have a wilhelt list that is only Zombies as the creature type runs little to no interaction (just stuff to remove tormond’s crypts, rest in peace, or hushbringer type effects.). Otherwise Its all gas. If someone counterspells me it goes to the graveyard for later anyway. Dont be afraid or worried to fill your graveyard. Run all the reanimation zombies. Dread return or other flashback res spells for mill effects. You’ll overwhelm the pod. If wilhelt is out almost every board wipe is a cyclonic rift for your battlefield.

I got a powerful list with Wilhelt, it has tons of recursion, some zombies mentioned here are included but I opted for more counterpells and tutors, as well as several combo lines you want your graveyard full and ways to protect it as well.
