About the Three-Ways Series:
Some people like their chicken wings sweet while others prefer them scorching hot; either way, you are eating chicken. Magic the Gathering is a game with many different rules and building a Commander deck that works takes some time and strategy. Understanding the commander of your deck will help inform a deck-building plan that works for you. In this series, Joel discusses commander strategies for every player. This broad-strokes approach will give you a basic breakdown of the commander and three different ways you can build your deck to work with its abilities, without providing a full deck-tech.
What is Commander:
Commander, officially recognized on June 17, 2011, originated from a format called EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander-- there can only be one). The first time we played EDH was around 2009. It is easily the best way to play Magic: The Gathering. The idea was to have a casual format with 100 cards and only a single copy of any one card, with a General: a singular Legendary Creature card in its own zone that can be cast any time, once you have the mana for it. If your general is removed, it goes up by a casting cost of 2 for each time it is removed. Once WOTC officially recognized the format and printed the first Commander product, your General was instead called your Commander and instead of the format being called EDH, it instead became recognized as Commander. If you ever hear anyone say EDH, they are talking about Commander. Make sure to know the cards that are banned in the format before building your deck (listed below).

Hi! Considering the sheer Numbers of new Zombies and synergies I am realy overwhelmed by my options to build a Varina Lich Queen Commander Deck. Perhaps you could do a Video on that? She is so Powerfull that I am playing with the Idea to build 2 or 3 Decks with her as a Commander. Zombie Tribal? Jeah! Selfmill Graveyard stuff? Jeah! Zombie Draw and MIll? JEAH!? But what comes to your mind?

There are so many amazing zombies now. I’m at the point in my deck where I’m struggling with what to include because I want all of the best ones, but I have to take other amazing cards out if I want to make room.

Tip that you might find useful - cut out the zombie lords. I find that giving +1/+1 to your zombies with an additional small effect is not worth it and id prefer to have a zombie that has a larger impact. Undead warchief is fine though, +2 power while making other zombies cheaper is worth it in my opinion

Rooftop storm + gravecrawler + sac outlet = infinite sacs. This combo + diregraf captain/ashnods altar = infinite damage/mana.

Field of the dead is a great upgrade to the mana base and I actually run a combination of snow basics and regular lands to help meet the requirements for field of the dead to get zombies also having some snow lands in the deck will also help with the narfi in the list to bring him back to the battlefield

calculating lich has some double power hands action going on really fun with the graf captain out and some decayed tokens swing deal damage with lich effect then deal combat damage then sac zombies deal more damage

Wilhelt + Poppet Factory + any sacrifice outlet = infinite Zombie creature tokens. That is one of the engines in the Wilhelt Zombie tribal EDH deck I run. Phyrexian Altar? Infinite mana. Altar of Dementia? Infinite mill. Life-drain effects like Vengeful Dead, Plague Belcher, Diregraf Captain and The Meathook Massacre? Infinite life-drain. If Eloise is under our control with Phyrexian Altar in the aforementioned scenario, then we can draw our library or surveil to other win conditions. Add Undead Alchemist, Lich Lord of Unx, Cover of Darkness and The Scarab God for alternate win conditions and we have a Zombie deck that can clear the table in a lot of different ways!

Take notice of what Zombie lords you have out prior to transforming poppet stitcher//poppet factory and it will remove all abilities given leading up to the transformation of poppet. Any lords put out onto the battlefield after poppet stitcher transforms will not be removed however.

Dreadhorde Invasion saved me last night in a 5 man pod. My army token was a 5, I was at 1 life, other player knew he was going out, so he proliferated my +1’s. I had eternal sky lord and kept swinging till I was back up to 25. Bought me enough time to pull out undead alchemist and mill the last 2 players for 20+ and 50+, winning the game.

I like my Mazirek, scurry oak, viscera seer, doubling season combo It's literally infinite power creeping squirrel tokens because viscera seer sacrifices, potentially squirrels, for free, mazirek hands out 1/1 counters whenever permanents are sacrificed, scurry oak creates 1/1 squirrels upon receiving 1/1 counters, and doubling season creates double the tokens and doubles the counters making the surviving squirrels, as well as the rest of the board, infinitely powerful throw in a transformed ulvenwald oddity to hasten the newbies and overwhelm your ops with a sea of stupidly buff squirrels AND this goes controllably infinite making the game a draw as you have to choose to pay the "price" for viscera seer each time making each sacrifice its own instance

Necroduality goes nuts with Wilhelt. If your opponents can’t destroy or counter it on cast you basically win. Also Rooftop storm being a card in zombie decks is insane. That is another “I win” button in Wilhelt decks.
