Do you want to write a spellbinding plot that engages your reader from page 1 to “the end”? It's easier said than done, I know. That's why, in this video, we’re unraveling the science behind an addictive plot. What makes a reader stay up until two in the morning, because they need to know what happens next? Can brain science help us craft better, more compelling stories? That's the question we're exploring in today's video. (Plus I have an exciting invitation for you!)

My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. That’s what we talk about every week on this channel - and if it’s something you’re into, be sure to subscribe and join this community!

Thank you for another good video, but every video I’ve been wanting examples. I see what you mean by what an addictive story is, but I need examples of an addictive story, and how I make it addicting. Nothing wrong with the video btw. I went from a terrible writer, but now I’m proud of what I’ve written.

Please go ahead and site the studies you mention. It's not that I doubt that curiosity effects dopamine or other neurotransmitters in a reward cycle similar to addictive substances. It's that saying "science has proven this" while not actually showing studies to support your claim makes the basis for this video seem flimsy.

Your videos are so well done. Do you edit your own videos? Great editing. I'm an author and filmmaker. Your whole productions is amazing: sound, lighting, editing, and presentation. A lot of KZbinrs struggle with sound and I can barely hear them even they are using an expensive microphone. But yours is perfect. Did you take classes in video production or all self-taught?

I am really disappointed, Abbie. I loved your content a year or two ago, you provided a lot of content, but in the last year, you seem to be lacking actual content in your videos, and instead hoping your KZbin subscribers will support you on Patreon where you actually post the content that’s promised in these KZbin ads, cause that’s basically that you are doing now: promoting all of your Patreon content in your KZbin videos. Leaving promising “content” in these free KZbin videos and then leave your subscribers hanging, hoping they will see a part two. You don’t even specify for your “live training” that you have to be a Patreon to begin with, they are paying a monthly fee and then WHAM, to attend the live training, they cop an extra expense. That’s very deceitful for many of your viewers who are quite young, assuming that is your demographic. This deceit makes me not trust you or your advice anymore… This leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Honestly, if this goes on any longer, the “helpful writing videos but really are just an ad for your Patreon with hidden costs” I will be unsubscribing for the foreseeable future. I’m not the only who has noticed your decline in actual content. Others are speaking up and rightly so. Your videos two years ago held so much promise, but now it seems like you’ve become a bit lazy with content. Just something I’ve noticed over the past year… I would love to hear back from you. If not, I guess this may be the last video I watch.
@annelightwood4782
@annelightwood4782 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I've felt the same. I watched for the helpful content, but keep getting ads. And that is very frustrating. It wouldn't be so bad (or AS frustrating) if there were more TO the videos, to give those watching on KZbin *some* kind of start, a way to follow along or some kind of worksheets to start with and work from on our own. Instead, there's just plugs for this live training. And even then the details for the live training are not made clear (which tier? How much? The rewards for XYZ tiers) so even the ADS for these things are a mess.

@@barbarar6112 I’ve gone through the 3 act structure videos and saved a copy of the handouts. I would prefer the teaching content as well (the video on the Disney five minute Rule helped clarify the Hook beat for example). Those were informative. This ad could have been a minute in an actual Hack Your Brain with Plot video. Instead of mostly an ad and fluff. Same thing with the Subplot video a few months back.

Your 3-Act structure has done wonders in helping me re-write a book I wrote years ago. If you’re curious about it, the book is called “Road Ranger’s Rise.” But this new one (this re-write) I’m calling it “The Road Ranger.” And here are some differences comparing both stories based on some of their events in one another: (Please note that some of these events have not yet been written in the new book as of the posting of this comment but they are in the outline) Beginning: Road Ranger’s Rise - Main character is part of this big battle during the last moments of his military service and is the only human being alive in that battle by the end of it. (This actually doesn’t impact the story all that much apart from him coming home alive) The Road Ranger - There is no big battle. Instead he’s in a car pondering on a tragic event in his life that drove him (no pun intended) to this moment where he brings out a gun he’s been hiding in his glove compartment, loads it up, and enters a dangerous gangland territory. (Note: This is actually taking place in the middle of the story but in the next chapter, time goes back 48 hours before this event took place. And this is long after his military service has ended. He is still fairly young however since he has actually spent 6 years in service.) Middle: Road Ranger’s Rise - Main character finally confronts the one who was responsible for killing the person that was dear to him. Before he could decide what to do with him however, main character is shot from a sniper essentially out of nowhere! But is soon healed as if a gunshot was just a minor injury to him. The Road Ranger - Main character confronts the one truly responsible for killing the person he loved dearly. The reason for this killing is somewhat reasonable but was still lawfully and morally wrong. But as soon as he lets his guard down to call in his cop friend, he’s stabbed by the evildoer and is left with a life-threatening injury. He’s taken to the hospital by his cop friend and is in critical condition. End: Road Ranger’s Rise - This last bit shows the main character killing a rapist after he tried his best to stay away from what was going on to another woman but just couldn’t keep it together. He had to deal with this issue the only way he believed how. The Road Ranger - He’s in a house that is actually outside of his home country. Not only does he now live here as a means to avoid the authorities looking for him but is also exiling himself after he confronted his misbelief about the person he loved and now has a completely different view of that person. He’s now disgusted with their actions instead of viewing them as this virtuous individual. Sorry this comment post is kinda long/huge but I just wanted to show/express how my discovery of this writing channel has done wonders in helping me become a better storyteller/writer. Rock on, Abbie! 🤘🏽 Edit: If you’re really curious about the old book, you can find it on Amazon titled “Road Ranger’s Rise.” But I don’t recommend reading it nor is it necessary to understand what’s happening in this new book of mine I’m working on.

You: Explain that the secret to getting readers addicted to your story is curiosity. It's all about getting their brains to ask a question, then getting the writer to promise an answer. Me: Start being curious to know exactly how to execute that idea. Also you: Promises the solution... In a live stream. Me: Wants to watch this live more than anything. Yep, looks like it's working.

Yeah Abbie’s enthusiasm and endorsement spurred me to get the 30 use trial of Scrivener just a couple weeks ago. I’ve used up three of my uses. I did some initial set up but then paused to figure out how I wanted to proceed before getting in again. I have tons of handwritten notes and references in a physical binder; but I think I’ll scan everything into pdfs and copy them into scrivener. Do you like it? Have you found the initial set up and the learning curve to be worth it? I’m thinking I should set up a template project with all my craft notes, references, scene card and character profile worksheets and of course my hybrid version of the three act structure. That way I can copy it every time I start a new project and just add the project specific info (research, brain dump and draft etc. ) You have any advice or tips?

I’ve applied Abbie’s why does it matter question to many of my story concepts. I want to write fantasy and sci-fi stories, but action for the sake of action is everything but the direction you want to be heading. I don’t want there to be all that much action in some of the stories. Intricate character work should always be the #1 priority. The concepts I have and the external events I’ve planned will matter to the characters.

I started watching _Breaking Bad_ and NO WAY IT'S SO ADDICTIVE xD And yes, it's mainly because of the characters. And for the books, there's one called The Push, which is addictive as well even though it's about the normal life of a woman and her family. It's wasn't boring at all, and I didn't need big events or big plot twists to feel interested.

This video (*cough-cough* add) did make me think you were gonna share some advice and you didn't really. Besides fact that the pursuit and achievement of answers gives us dopamine, which, is true. But, how can I complain? You share lots of other really really valuable info for free. Great videos!

I have a great idea and I have the start and end planned out… but I don’t know how to make the plot line as interesting as it is in the movies. I guess I just have to keep working on it. Also wow you’re very pretty.

Hi Abbie! Would this three-act story structure you are going to talk about during the live training still work with creating a trilogy?

Hi Elise, Abbie has a great video on applying 3-act story structure to trilogies/series. You may need to browse her vids for it.

The hook: Internal conflict Who is the main character? This is the question you will introduce at the beginning of this section and then answer at the end of it. Start on the next beat. The Inciting Incident: Will they achieve their goal? This is the question you will introduce at the beginning of this section and then answer at the end of it. Start on the next beat. The first plot point: Will they get the thing they've always wanted? Same thing. the midpoint: Will they overcome their fear? Same thing. The climatic sequence: Will they find happiness at last? I've probably repeated myself too many times. The resolution:

I have a question and I’d be glad if someone were able to give some advice. How do you write multiple POV’s (especially in some character arcs that don’t intertwine [at first])? Do you write the story chronologically, or do you write a certain story arc first, before even thinking about touching another story arc?

What I've done is figure out how I can braid the two POV's together. Sometimes, the characters won't physically meet until a certain point, but at least you get both stories being built at the same time despite the characters maybe not meeting until a certain story beat.

I outline, decide my best guess on how to weave the POVs together (when to switch and to whom), and then write them in the order they appear to the reader, not independently. One thing Shaelin Writes has talked about that’s helped me a lot is making sure the sequence of your story maintains causality, so making sure the order serves a purpose basically. Also worth noting that Shaelin isn’t an outliner-I’m not sure how often they use multiple POVs, but I think you can make those decisions by feel too, like what feels like it needs to come next, from what POV.

I have a weird question and would really appreciate if anyone has a solution for that; I been thinking about a story since I was a child. More than a story I've been thinking of a group of characters. Problem is, it's been years and years I've spent with these characters without writing any proper story. So now I do know them. I know their childhood, how do they meet what they ve been through and what those turned them into. I know their past and future and how they have changed through time. It was just a fun thing I do on my own to spend time but recently I really want to put them in a story and willing to put some work on it. I watch so many of your videos and they are super helpful but I still dont know from which part of these characters' lives should I start the story from. Because they were like part of my life and were growing up with me, healing from bad events and going through some other stuff just like it happens in real life. How do I know what is the beginning of my story? Probably they became my coping mechanism for my own life struggles and probably there were times I gone crazy and lived a little too much in my dream land with them but anyways.. can anyone tell me how do I make this into a story?? 😬

It’s really hard to wedge an established idea into a proper story (I speak from experience of doing this knowingly and stubbornly lol). Look at what themes you could write, look at what part of the timeline is the most fitting and interesting (the character(s) should be the exact opposite of what they learn), and don’t be afraid to painfully change or scrap things. You could write multiple stories too. I suggest “starting small” before you try to write the epic saga your idea deserves, but then again I’m a total hypocrite :,D It’s pain because you’ll scrap plots/stories/entiiire ideas over and over as you learn- finish something small for the sake of your morale and take Ethan Becker’s advice to “fail fast” to learn fast. Hopefully I’ll do likewise after I finish the foolishly large project I’ve already committed to :,D If you want to remember everything before you tearfully bust in and renovate with your sledgehammer, I suggest you get an unused notebook/sketchbook (or make a new text document) and legit dump the contents of your brain. Everything. Every whim and question and sudden new thought (maybe make a checklist of ideas to remind yourself of the main things for when you exhaust a tangent). It’ll free up some thinking power too because you won’t have to spend effort remembering it all. This is a *sloppy* idea trove that has potential for epic idea remixes, and you can reiterate from it for multiple stories. But beware of the relief from being done writing it, it may cause you to lose interest. You’ll need to want to work on your story after the brain dump. Ask yourself why you’re writing. Tbh I recommend doing a brain dump first so there’s no risk keeping you from going crazy with renovating and scraping. You can always come back to it too if your cleaned up idea lost its spark. If you want to chat further, I’m really invested in learning the craft of storytelling and I’d love to learn with you! I’ll be leaving another reply comment with my Discord server (in case KZbin wants to yeet it). Have a great day or night, Jesus loves you ❤️ [Edit] KZbin censorship thinks I’m a scammer 💪 Is this why we can’t have nice things?

Can you give some tips that will help me tell the person and convince him the antagonist is lying?

I have a quick question! Hi I’m fairly new to your channel, but have been watching all of your videos so so so frequently! This exact topic is something I’ve been struggling with and working on consistently for a while now, and this is the exact time that I’ve done everything else and its time to really dive deep and plot it! I unfortunately missed the live session, (I’m from the future :)) and would love to watch the replay! As well as tune in next month! Here’s the question haha: do I have to pay for an account on that site so I can watch it? As well as to join the live sessions? Or is there somewhere you post the streams? I would need my moms permission to get that site since I am a young writer and author, and idk if I have the ability to pay for it, so I was just curious. Thank you so much! (And sorry that wasn’t such a “quick” question I guess whoops haha :))

Abbie there's something i rly don't understand about stories Some story's I've seen have the main character SEEM to already know the lesson from the beginning of the story but it still works out like in the anime Naruto one of the themes is to never give up but the main character already knows that from the beginning and he just teaches the other characters in the series to do the same and it still works out well. So is there a way to make stories like that or do they have misbeliefs that we don't see I'd like to make stories like that but idk how
