Thanks for this video. I'm getting better about sharpening knives but I've been too nervous to try this with a sword. I love your idea about getting a cheaper one to practice on. Make sense to me!
@gargoylesblade2 жыл бұрын
Yes,it does. It takes a bit of time to learn, and I'm still learning it myself, so I use really inexpensive swords to do it.

Kind of therapeutic in a way. I just started messing with stone sharpening myself. I like that base you have there. Cool video brother. I had no idea swords took that long.

Swords take a while to sharpen especially katana, because you're polishing and sharpening at the same time.

What would be the sharpness on the blade you worked on? Can I achieve razor sharp with 1000 grit?
@gargoylesblade5 ай бұрын
You can achieve that with a 1000 grit stone, a good quality one.it doses take a little bit of work to get it,I personally use a 1000 grit kuromaku stone and a leather strop.my sharpness level I'd say is perty good, but I don't bring my edges to a razor neither, the edge doesn't stay that sharp after a bit, when cutting mats and bottles.

will it rub off the Hamon line if you sharpen it on the Whetstone stone?
@gargoylesblade5 ай бұрын
@hunterriemer5089 it will, so you have to use a really fine stone to bring it back out,the process takes a while to do.

Revisiting this as I'm looking at removing a fake hamon on a blade in the future. Do you think 1000 grit is a better grit to start at for removing a hamon like that? Or is that going to be a longer haul going back up through the grits?
@gargoylesblade Жыл бұрын
If you can, start with 300.it really aggressive to remove it,then move up. But if you only have 1000,it will work to,

Hey alex, what kind of grid would you recommend to sharpen a katana (no bumps , cracks or anything , just keep it extra sharp).
@gargoylesblade6 ай бұрын
@Pavlosgeo_ I use the kuromaku 1000,from shapton they work great,it will put an edge on fast. You only soak it one time, after that it's just splash and go. Just don't ever use oil on it,it will ruin it, and of course you go up on grits for finer to with them.

You should really use mineral oil. It will prevent your blade from rusting through this process. Nothing wrong with what you are doing at all, it's just preferable and cleaner to use oil. Also you can achieve the same kind of effect with emery. I took it up to 3000 grit and ended up with a fairly nice mirror but obviously 8000 will be much shinier. Good vid dude!
@gargoylesblade10 ай бұрын
I prefer using water because it's easy to get and use, also my stones I have, you can't use oil on them. But thank you for the advice

Yeah it can get expensive. Cost me $500.00 for a professional polish. And it was sharper before it was polished. I thought for sure that a $500.00 polish would ensure a razors edge. Boy, was I wrong.
@gargoylesblade Жыл бұрын
It is expensive for sure, the one I did came out sharper than when I bought it. Now it's not hair shaving sharp, you really don't want a blade that sharp, the edge doesn't last as long, especially on bottles and hard targets.
@melissastanton84 Жыл бұрын
@gargoylesblade I wanted a razors edge for pool noodles and suspended newspapers, maybe fruits and vegetables to.
