That turning around bit looks pretty important! Glad I watched this first.

Thanks Mr Puckett! I had a few things right. My best horse is a fast walker, and the ones I pony keep slack in the lead. But the backup/turn around business I've never tried or knew how to do. I always just turned right, into the horse I'm ponying and pushed him around til I'm going in the right direction. (Give me 40 acres and I'll turn this rig around.)

I sort of chuckled when you said, this is the way you do it. Years ago I hired on to a dude ranch in Montana . He asked if I knew anything about horses. I replied, something to effect I know what you want me to do with them. I learned different ways of leading over many years. I have to admit I like the loop over the neck method for teaching them.

I'd bet I'm not... I heard pat say one time that one of the horses sent to him was known to buck. Before pat got on him he made the comment" I know hes not gonna buck. why? Because i just know hes not"... how'd he know he wasn't gonna buck

If you want a longer video, and you haven't already, buy some of his videos from his website. Not only will you get a longer video, you'll help monetize his efforts. BTW, I'm not anything to Pat and Deb but a follower.

Thank you Pat for this video. My mare is a faster walker than my lead horse. Constantly trying to pass us or push us . I need advice on keeping her off my leg and staying back. Thank you. Susan in Floral city fl.

Bump her back whenever she goes ahead of your knee. Repeat until she gets it. Encourage your saddle horse to walk faster.

Please Pat . With the bolsalito, is it tied off around the neck the same as in your video , with a Hondo, For the get me down. And is horsehair to prickly around the neck .it looks like on your videos you use mohair, but I can never see the knot. Really appreciate you explaining what works for you in your videos. you can’t be experience. (31° in England)
@PatnDebPuckett4 жыл бұрын
No. Absolutely do not tie your get down with a sliding ring. That is tied with a bowline. You can look up videos that show you how to tie it. You do not want a knot that will tighten around your horse’s neck with your get down. By the time you are in the bridle, your horse better know how to lead without the sliding ring. I have no idea why anyone would want to use a prickly mecate or get down rope on a horse although I have heard the claim that people use it to teach a horse to neck rein. Neck reining isn’t something we teach our horses so I can’t comment on that. When we use horsehair, it’s mane hair which is soft. We prefer mohair or yak hair because it stays soft even when it gets wet.

One more thing I just thought to bring up. You can see that many of the things Pat uses like the sliding ring in this video aren’t to correct problems with his horses. It’s to keep the horse from ever learning the problem in the first place. Once that lesson is solid, the horse understands not to drag on the lead rope, the sliding ring can go away. It’s no longer needed. Over the life of the horse, it will never occur to him to drag on the lead rope or to pull back on it. Because he was never allowed to do it in the first place.

Pat & Deb Puckett .Thank you for helping me and my horse . Things just keep getting better and better, Thanks to your channel. I’m using your missing link snaffle with the bolsalito For the two rain, I know it’s wrong. i’m yet to buy a Weston bit. you’d be amazed how stupid people are, like myself who just Don’t know. Many thanks for the reply.x
@PatnDebPuckett4 жыл бұрын
Both the bosal and the Missing Link Snaffle are direct pull. They teach the horse the same thing. Don’t use them together. A western bit is signal and/or leverage. Choose the Missing Link Snaffle or the bosal, not both. Good luck!

Great stuff!!! Back in the day-Ponied many a race horse and was ponied as an exercise rider. Invariably those race horses had been “broke to drag”- drag the human! obviously also trained by a dink! Lol

Pat- I have been hanging my horse and he is going through his stages, the most I have had time for are 1 and 1/2 hours at a time. Am I defeating my purpose or will it take more time.

It will just take a little longer. Don’t worry about it.

thankyou pat and deb for another informative video. I'm sure that like most things, i will know when I have roped my horses enough, but how long does that generally take? please don't say it takes as long as it takes. thank you again from sand mountain alabama.
@PatnDebPuckett4 жыл бұрын
When your horse is standing in the middle of the roundpen with his head low and you are standing on the edge of the roundpen roping him. When he’s following you around so closely that you can barely build your loop. Those are two indicators that you’ve roped your horses enough and with quality. It’s not enough just to put in a given amount of time. You have to rope your horse correctly and with the right frame of mind. If your horse is running around like an idiot, you’re roping like you’re killing a snake, and you’re out of breath, you aren’t doing it right and no amount of time will make the above two things happen. I had a violin teacher tell me that practice does not make perfect...PERFECT practice makes perfect. Good luck!

How do you deal with a spooker? She ponies well, but spooks hence wanting to pony out on trails.
@PatnDebPuckett4 жыл бұрын
Shurray Barnes Kick her up to 45. Get moving. Trot out. Pick the roughest country you can find. Then she’ll have to make some hard choices...look for something to spook at or stay upright.
