After many requests to go a bit deeper into some of the basics in each trick, I am starting with the POP. This is a key and fundamental dynamic within most tricks that allows the rider to generate a clean takeoff and also get more efficient height from each trick. If you are popping for a jump or any trick, it is different each time, however the key features remain the same. So these POP trick exercises at the start of a session will really help you to get yours dialled in!!
Please let me know in the comments if you have any questions or you would like any details on another area of a trick!?

Thx Tom, good to have deeper dive into the pop topic. I think that practicing a solid pop is something that a lot of people are overlooking, me included. I'll try to get back to the basics and practice it some more.

you can trim your board speed, too much heel pressure = breaks... a flatter board = faster... there is a mixture of the two!!

Hi Tom! Could you give some advice how to pop and jump on Gambler with boots? I'm used to ride and jump Jaime with straps and recently I got Gambler and was riding it in wake park. I can do backrolls and raleys in wake park with Gambler, but having hard time to do pop / raley / backroll on Gambler with kite. i'm over rotating for some reason or just loosing balance in the air. Even with straight jumps. I guess its because Gambler have way more rocker then Jaime? Any ideas what should I change in my techniques to make it work with Gambler? Thank you!
@tomcourtkite
@tomcourtkite 2 жыл бұрын
Yes mate, the rocker will give your a deeper cut into the water and send you into rotations a bit faster for sure. Make sure to engage your core in the tricks, keep control of the board (it’s heavier than the Jaime) invert your legs if you can. This gives control over landing and rotations… ride the board with speed, as the rocker will soak up the speed. It’s about getting used to it! Are you using fins?
@lukaspro1282
@lukaspro1282 2 жыл бұрын
@@tomcourtkite In the wakepark I don't use fins and I'm wondering why I don't have issues in the wake park with raley and backrolls but only with the kite :) its odd! With kite I use DTK Carbon 30 fins and it makes the board more controllable but still in straight jump i'm out of balance in the air :) Can it be because its also heavier with boots and while doing release I throw board to much in the rotation, because I used to ride jame?
@tomcourtkite
@tomcourtkite 2 жыл бұрын
@@lukaspro1282 yes it could be that, also the wakepark is different as you are unhooked all the time and riding towards the pull, but with a kite you are edging always… some fundamental differences. The weight will make a difference for sure, especially with the hang time that you get with a kite!
@lukaspro1282
@lukaspro1282 2 жыл бұрын
@@tomcourtkite yes is true the pull is different in the wake park. If you think about how you jump with gambler vs jaime - do you recon any difference in the way how you do release and pop? well i guess its hard to say :)

Great video, much appreciated! I had a quick question: I’m getting a new TT for mainly hooked in tricks and boosting in south coast England, so as you know choppy and variable wind (sadly I can’t regularly sneak out to Hurst castle flats...!). Looking at the size/weight chart for the Jaime I’m exactly in the middle of two sizes. Do I size down for extra control at speed in chop, or size up cos a bit more area gives more lift/pop, and try to muscle it in to control at speed?! I’m fairly fit so ‘comfort’ isn’t an issue, just interested to know if experienced riders go for the bigger or smaller size if they are dead in the middle of each size. Cheers!
@loganramirez316
@loganramirez316 4 жыл бұрын
If you’re a confident rider and can control your speed with your edging go size up. Riding powered with a controlled edge will help take a lot of that lack of control out. Example. Have you every been riding in windy conditions and you start cooking and have a hard to to slow down even when the kite is brought up to 12? That’s a case where your edge control to slow yourself comes into play and you can gauge your ability level but it’s always good to force yourself into new situations so you can grow into them.

I wanna try but no wind here :( repeating: going at a good speed, carve quickly upwind but how do i leave the water? What is the action that makes me leave the water? Is it like jumping on the floor of my house or what? Thank you man great video! Cheers

Wow, still trying to digest the fact that in addition to not steering/sending the kite (which I knew about already) you also don't sheet in the bar. Also, you don't do a little bear off prior initiating the upwind carve. This seems a lot different from the conventional wisdom. Presumably you are laying a solid foundation with the legs/upper body first and the bearing off and sheeting in then come next ? Sadly, I am in winter at the moment and can't go rushing off to the local to try it out.
@loganramirez316
@loganramirez316 4 жыл бұрын
Bearing downwind before carving upwind in most cases are you trying to go for a very large pop or to unhook. Not pulling in the bar is because of all the line tension from carving away from the kite. Think of a rubber band.
@tomcourtkite
@tomcourtkite 4 жыл бұрын
the bearing away style of pop refers to most unhooked riding. Remember this is a hooked in pop exercise that will get you getter with board skills for an unhooked pop!!
