Had to orbit back to this video as I’ve got a spare 928 engine and recalled your tips for the 996 heads. The 928 head is similar just add 8 more valves. Thanks again. PS 928 heads had 4 valves all the way back in 1986-7 ;). I’ll see if the ignitor method works for me when complete 😮!

Isopropyl alcohol works well for the valve sealing test you were conducting also. Looks like your almost home with the rebuild and best with it.
@ManinaGarage3 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea Warren, the Alcohol would be easier to handle than a gas can. All the tests were done with brake cleaner, I ran out and used gasoline for the actual intro, it was a little more energetic 🥳🧯. Thank you for watching 🤘😎

ATF is what most people use in checking for valve seat leaks... FWIW, when the head is apart is a good time to check to see if your valve springs still have the specified pressure at the installed height. those shims adjust the spring pressure at the installed height.
@ManinaGarage3 жыл бұрын
Hello JimF, I really appreciate you sharing your experience 🙌. People reading this these comments will be able to pick up some extra wisdom. Sadly I did not know testing valve springs was a thing 🤪, I found this online "Proform Mini Valve Spring Tester" is that the kind of tool you are talking about? The heads are already put back together, hopefully everything is ok 🤞🏻. I will get one of these tools for next time if you think it's the right one. Thank you for watching 🤘😎
@jimf51603 жыл бұрын
@@ManinaGarage yes. the proform is typical. That way you can test spring pressure at your installed height and use those shims if necessary, to have the same seat pressure on all the valve seats. Valve springs do lose pressure over time and unless the car has low miles, replacement is a good idea. You would test spring pressure at the installed height and spring pressure at full lift.

Nice work yet again! Didn't the valve seals include 1 or 2 little caps? They'd go over the valve stem ends after the valves are fitted and cover the grooves thus protecting the seals from damage when they are fitted.
@ManinaGarage3 жыл бұрын
Hello Bernard, KZbin had an issue with the link within your comment, they put you in quarantine for a couple of days and then removed the link 😂. Short answer is no, they just came in plastic bags with 8 seals each. I did not know a seal protecting cap was a thing 🥺. Thank you for the heads up 🤘😎

Hi Finn really getting into the build can’t wait for the next episode! Did you skim both heads and if so why? Also did you use a thicker head gasket or standard? Cheers Will
@ManinaGarage2 жыл бұрын
Howdy William 🤠, The machine shop said that the heads were in really good shape, they took off 3/1000ths from each head to cleanup/flatten the surface. Their determination was that the heads had not suffered any warping due to overheating, the skimming was a minimal amount. I ended up using the standard 3 layer head gasket. Thank you for watching 🤘😎

@@palatinaworks7251 100% correct sir, the 928 that was intended to replace the 911 had four valves per cylinder long before the 911.

Hi. Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying your videos. Very interesting and educational. (And entertaining ;-). Not sure what you do as a profession but if it isn't making video content, it should be ;-). Anyway, I'm considering rebuilding a 997.1 engine and am trying to find some info re piston ring end gap. (Whatever that is) Just wondered whether you considered this or maybe it's not necessary with a stock set up? Looking forward to the next video.
@ManinaGarage3 жыл бұрын
Hello Stewart, I may be able to dig into this a little more if this answer does not satisfy. For this car I purchased the stock rings to go with factory pistons in a factory cylinder. The advice I received stated that no gapping was required in this instance. For rings outside of that ,my understanding is that the gapping distance may be on the ring packaging itself. Are you re-sleeving or upgrading your pistons? Thank you for watching!
@stewartnunn81793 жыл бұрын
@@ManinaGarage No, that's a great help, thank you. I think I'm going to go down the re-sleeve route so am sure I'll get some advice from Hartech at the time, too. Thanks again and hope feeling better re your recent injury.
