I am a brand new family photographer. Did my first large shoot today. This video helped me so much. My client actually complimented me after the shoot on how I knew just what I wanted and how good I was at directing. Thank you so much for showing me a style I was not aware of. Made my shoot so much easier. As a newly I was not sure I would like this aspect of the job. Now I can hardly wait for my next shoot. Happy New Year.

This is great info. I like how intimate the poses look. I watched the losing session twice, and both times it struck me that the directions sounded negative. “Don’t put your hand around her like that.” And “don’t look at me.” I like to say things like, “the way you did it looks great, now let’s try putting your hand…” so it is positive language rather than negative. “Do” do this rather than “do NOT” do that.

How do you set your focus? Single focus or continuous? Auto or manual? And where do you usually focus (mom, dad, kid?) to keep wide aperture. Also what metering mode do you use?

Amazing lecture. So many takeaways, thank you. I also love the fact that you're a minimalist. I always thought the idea was to get away with as less as possible. So, find a pocket of light somewhere, go into some corner and make do with what you have. I am in awe of photographers who use massive setup, but I don't see myself doing it. Also the "lifestyle" type of shoot which is still directed sounds really inspiring. As for insisting on smiles, I feel like it's totally allowed to capture all children emotions, not just smiles (or fake smiles). And it's so smart that you have a contract detailing everything you will do and cannot guarantee that you can do. Also amazing ideas for a select number of locations that you know and understand how to use the most out of. That makes PERFECT sense. I used to shoot birthdays for kids, lot s of running around, minimal time to capture, etc, but I still could manage to get decent portraits of most of the kids, most of the time. However, every once in a while there would be a kid that just will not accept to be photographed. Not even once...every time I approach, the kid covers their face and just won't let me. And then, the father goes: "I guess you're gonna have a hard time with this one". Not really sure the expectation here was realistic or fair, so props for the contract. Sorry about the long comment and keep up the great work, I am following you on IG!

Posing in some way yes but I feel the light needs ton of work by either working with the available light and use it in your favor or creating it with strobes, flashes or reflectors.

At around 8:24, it is suggested that touching subjects puts them at ease and makes posing directives easier to follow. In light of the social distancing norms in effect around the world, I would love to know if Elena S. Blair has specific tips on how she has modified her family sessions or other types of sessions.

Can i make one remark? The photographer told the kids several times that it was the last picture she would take or olmost done. And then she made like 1000 photo's afterwards. The kids want's to have a timeframe. When you say you are done, then be done, right?
@JessicaNiles4 жыл бұрын
Meh. In this situation, you do what you gotta do! If the kids are able to keep giving more, YOU TAKE IT. 😜 Outside of photoshoots then sure- give kids a timeframe and honor it.

The younger boy was very uncooperative, misbehaved. He should have been disciplined right then and there. I felt the parents Embarrassment. Their attire should have been a little more photogenetic, appropriate for the shoot as well. All of it was off. Did not want to show photos due to all above although she is a good photographer, Lifestyle.
