Watch this video that contains footage from a real Jason Lanier Workshop conducted in Nevada over the span of 2 days in March 2013. Footage contains tips on posing, lighting, composition, and more as well as the images that Jason took during the workshop.
This is provided to give the viewer a great idea as to what a photography workshop with Jason Lanier is like. You will see him use a variety of products including Nikon, Speedlights, Ray Flash, Pocket Wizards, Sony Video Lights, Rotolights, MeFoto Tripods, Benro Tripods, Sunbounce Reflectors, Calumet Light Panels and more.

At about 7:19 Lanier touches his model to position her legs and dress. Never, and I mean NEVER touch your model unless you're intimate with her enough to do so. With that said, this is a fantastic shoot. Jason is a professional, and I know it was just an oversight. Nice work Jason. These shots are at another level!

Funny until you get sued. Maybe you're not a professional? At the very least you risk making her uncomfortable. You should know this Jason, but if it's all about you, then OK. Most professionals have a female makeup artist that can be used for model adjustments. No problem. I'll say one thing - in a world where people sue someone else for spilling their own hot coffee on their own lap and then actually end up winning the lawsuit, you've got balls putting your hands between your model's legs.

"sue someone else for spilling their own hot coffee on their own lap and then actually end up winning" Are you talking about that old lady in the past, because she was seriously burnt from the scolding hot coffee, and first she only asked that Mcdonalds cover her medical expenses. When mcdicks denied her she took them to court for medical expenses and layers fees, when the court saw the damage caused they awarded her a larged sum! So yes we should be able to sue and WIN for such things, as a story handing you a scolding hot coffee that could seriously F you up, if MISTAKENLY dropped!!!!

Once thing I don't like during courses, is the photographer usually gets in the front, and starts taking their own photos, and the students can't get the best shots because the teacher is hogging the best shots and situations. Jason seems to be aware of this.

Brent makes a strong argument with the use of the ND. Depending on what you're going for in post, choosing the right stop ND, the right lens etc could give you a nice creamy background while still keeping your subjects in focus. I'd like to see that! Might have to grab a car and some models myself and twist the shoot a bit. Guys ... All great input. I love when criticism turns 180 degrees into a group of photographers brainstorming. God bless creative people!!!!

Regardless of the negative comments and the 'dress lifting' incidents.. I lost count how many times she was asked to do this... I personally would never ask a bride to do this unless they have specifically asked. I like how he allows the students up front access. I like how he explains each shot to the clients and also the students. I like how he continues to talk about safety for his students regardless of himself. There are many positives to a few negatives with this video. I for one have learnt so much and makes me love Photography even though I am an amateur. Anyhow, I learnt of what 'not' to do and what would be great idea's. My fave shot from all this is 14:54. .

I found this video extremely beneficial - lots of ideas. However, if I was paying for this workshop, I would have felt somewhat cheated in that Jason was primarily the shooter. He keeps touching the models instead of verbally directing and or lightly touching them. If you do too much physical contact as a pro photographer you might get into trouble.
@JasonLanierPhotography
@JasonLanierPhotography 10 жыл бұрын
Orzy, speaking as a professional photographer I can tell you that you are wrong. Touching the male and female models with permission is the single fastest way to pose and get the shots that you need to get. I am not alone in this approach as almost all high end wedding photographers do the same.
@khaleel_as
@khaleel_as 4 жыл бұрын
@@JasonLanierPhotography You're not high end photographer. Plus, you should show people how to communicate with models not touching them. Also, it is very inappropriate to touch them in certain areas. Tell the person what to do is what professionals do. Touching others, is what pervs do. You didn't even ask for permission like "Hey, do you mind if I touch you here?" if she didn't know what your directions are. And again, this is not how to pose wedding couples, bro these are garbage photos lol. Angles, posing, colors, all of it is absolute trash. Last year you were called out on this shit, you denied all of it. But all your past videos shows how you treat models.

hmm im torn between using a strobe and a battery pack and a reflector. The wedding couple did not seem to squint much with the reflector, this was my main reason for leaning towards a flash. Would you still recommend exposing for the highlights and then bringing in the reflector close enough so the exposure on the subjects balance with the ambient? Do you ever use the white/godl reflector? One last question i have a 5 in 1 standard round reflector not a huge one like you use, its probably time for me to upgrade? i will be doing ONLY couple shots for an hour in vanuatu at 4pm ( 730 is sunset there). I also only have a 35 1.4 and an 85 1.4 and a 28-70 kit. Im certain this will do but would like any advice from someone i admire! Thanks Jason, great vid!

Hey Jason, first off, LOVE your style and attitude towards photography, it's not what you have, it's are you using it correctly... Been watching various videos of yours, and I LOVE using my Canon 7D with primes and about to upgrade to the Mark ll. But have also gotten into music videos and weddings...(odd combo I know) so I was thinking going full frame Sony a7s along with the 7D Mkll. I know you love the a6000, and your church video sold my buddy on it tonight and bought one right after watching that video. I shoot local bands/national touring bands in darker clubs and venues and am getting into portraits and weddings with my sweet lady as my 2nd shooter so I thought sony's mirrorless would be lighter and easier for her to handle as opposed to the standard beast of a DSLR, and with the metabones adapter I can keep my Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 A, 200mm f2.8L, Sigma 85mm DG f1.4 and have a decent array of options and keep my speed with the Mk ll as well as having portrait options with the a7s. Any advice Mr. Yoda of Imagery?

Just my opinion; but I don't find the "hiking the dress up" very classy. Also; this guy lacks charisma when dealing with the clients. Being confident and directing people is different from giving orders, a fine line between.
@NoESanity
@NoESanity 6 жыл бұрын
it can be classy.... usually isn't, but it is "hot" much more often then it is classy, and a lot of people care more about appeal than class. that being said, I don't think he lacks charisma when dealing with his clients... i think he's focusing most of his attention on the students. I don't know what the arrangements were, but i'd assume the clients were given a pretty decent discount for agreeing to be part of the class. That being said nothing he said or directed really seemed to be disrespectful or commanding. he knew what he's doing so he told them what to do. That being said some of his jokes were a bit cringy.... but you can't really argue with the results.
