1/I think dobermans' are pretty good at tolerating pain and they will certainly tell other dogs to stop when it hurts. So I would not worry too much about the ears getting hurt or themselves. 2/ Try to use kongs filled with treats or peanut butter to distract them and get that energy out on that instead of each other. Use bully sticks as well. They are probably a bit bored and need an activity. 3/When you see the dobies play so rough, crate each of them separately or one at a time. You want to intercept the bad behaviour and not reward that type of activity.

What's the risk with this tight? I did tight, not really but that would sit well
@EARPOSTKIT2 жыл бұрын
If the tape is too tight around the ears, this will cut the blood flow/circulation which results in an infected ear which can lead to more problems. Make sure you are taping the ear respecting the structure of the ear. I would recommend checking the ears daily to see if there are any signs of discomfort or infection. Additionally, it's recommended to change the ear posts 3-4 days, which puts you in a better position to catch a situation where you may have accidentally taped too tight.

Do they have to be baby or you can still crop their ears when there grown
@EARPOSTKIT2 жыл бұрын
Dobermans ears are cropped between 10-12 weeks old. Veterinarians will have an age limit on when is the latest time to crop. Best recommendation is to call around local vets and see what your options are depending if you are still in the "time window" for cropping. In general, it is NOT recommended to crop ears when they are grown, since the ears are fully developed at that stage and this will cause significant damage to the ears.

it all depends on when you started the ear posting process, which is usually when the puppy is 10-15 weeks old. From that age you then post until about the 1 yr mark. It will depend for each puppy, but for mine I only posted for about 3 months starting when she was 15 weeks old. Some dog's ears will stand up quicker than others or it will take longer so it depends. The way to test is to not post them for a week and see how they stand. There were weeks where I didn't post my puppy and the ears were just fine.

Wow how old was she when you did it? I have a female also same color and one ear flopped so i re did it this was at about 3months shes 4 months now but your dog looks a bit bigger
@EARPOSTKIT2 жыл бұрын
It's recommended that you post the ears until they are 6/7 months old as long as you have been posting consistently after the ears were cropped at 11/12 weeks of age. If you notice the ear flopping then I'd recommend posting the ears for another 2 months to ensure they don't flop further. Ofcourse you should be removing and replacing the ear posts every 3-4 days during the process. Every dog will be different and may take a longer time to get those ears to stand firmly consistently. You just have to try and see what works for you.

@EARPOSTKIT3 жыл бұрын
Carol - it will depend on when you start the ear posting process. It looks like you are a getting a puppy so you will be posting your puppy's ear until they reach the age of 1 as a good rule of thumb. 1/Using the backer rod for a bridge has helped the ear become more stable because theres more support instead of just using tape. Therefore the posts do not easily fall out. 2/You need to change the ear posts every 4 days. Make sure you check it everyday for signs of infection or if its wet. If you need more help I personally create earposts using the backer rod method and then provide support via earpostkit.com

@@hectorespinoza7641 my mom's dogs (a dalmatian and an english setter) had both floppy ears and never had a single ear infection. I suspect that the ear infections are pretty much as rare in the dogs with pointy ears
@luxisntlucky3 жыл бұрын
@@mikelor84 actually it can help prevent some ear infections since Dobies are prone to chronic or recurring ear infections and the tail is not just cosmetic. With how thin the Doberman tail is they can suffer from happy dog syndrome where they get so happy or excited that they wag their tail and it hits or snags something and it breaks which is 10x more painful for the dog than getting cropped when they are a puppy. So yes it is partially cosmetic but it’s also for the dogs comfort and preventative measures.

@@rachelr3113 actually yes they are more prone to ear infections because they have the droopy ears, I can list more benefits to having them cropped if you so wish? 1. They improve the dogs hearing for guard and protection purposes. 2. If its falling completely off then you probably need to add more tape to each ear. Secondly use a backer rod bridge, place the bridge as close as you can to the head so it can support both ears. Third try to take your dog out on a walk or something for the first 20 mins while the ear posts are in and the tape settles in. Try giving them a bully stick etc so they can pay attention to something else other than whats on their ears. If you need 1-1 support , email lody@earpostkit.com and I can help you out and see how you are posting the ears and walk you through it.

Please make sure that you are not blocking the ear canal with tape as it is really uncomfortable for them.

How long do you have them on before taking them off and re applying again? thanks
@EARPOSTKIT3 жыл бұрын
It usually depends but I aim for 3 - 5 days. Sometimes my dog takes it out on her own or maybe the backer rod gets pretty dirty from her playing. My advice would be to check the ears each day and lookout for signs of wetness, and any weird smells. If its wet it may get infected and just irritate the ear causing the tape to become tighter. If their is a strong smell coming from the ear it may be infected and lookout for any discharge.

@@EARPOSTKIT And do you take a break between the two measures? For example a day to "ventilate" the ears? Or will the posts be updated directly?

I just tried this and it didn’t work his post came right out but I didn’t do it this way because I posted after I found your video the backer rod came out of the ear. Do I need to cut a longer backer rod or why is it that when he shakes the backer rod comes out
@EARPOSTKIT2 жыл бұрын
If the bottom part of the backer rod is popping out of the ear, but the ear post is still on the ear, then it should be fine as long as the ear post are shaped like this \-/ with a solid bridge. Overall here are a few tips to make sure it stays on: 1/Cut the backer rod tip in a diagonal manner so it has a pointer shape. This will help it stay/fit better when inserting it in the ear. 2/Use the zonas tape or medical paper tape to backwrap the backer rod so the sticky side is out which will help it stick to the inside of the ear. Which also helps it sticky to the tape when you are taping up the ear + the post. 3/Pull the ear all the way up while inserting the ear post and keep pulling the ear up as you are taping it. If you let it go down then the ear post wont be fitted properly 4/Use a solid backer rod bridge, which will help create the \-/ shape at the 11 and 1 oclock position and ensure that the ear posts remain in place together.

@@EARPOSTKIT yeah I tried I wasted so much material because it kept coming out and at that point a lot of places say re do it if it comes out but it’s been nothing but frustrating I’m going to try it again tomorrow I leterally tried for 4 hours and it just kept coming out. On top of that my pup isn’t staying still while I do any of it so that makes it so hard.

Try to get someone to help you hold your pup down while you do the ears. It's really hard when you are doing it yourself, specially in the beginning. If it continues to fall out, and you are really struggling... another option is to buy Torbot from amazon which is a skin safe glue.You can apply a small amount of glue to the ear post then insert the ear post in the ear. Then use the zonas tape to tape the ear + ear post. It is skin safe but it can get a little messy with Torbot. You will then need to get UNI-SOLVE Adhesive Remover to safely remove the ear posts. Either way, first try to the normal backer rod methot without the glue and get someone to help you hold your pup. Hey Ian! I recommend 1/getting another person to help hold the puppy down 2/make sure your puppy is fully tired, mentally and physically 3/try to use high quality treats even if it means using plain cooked chicken. The beginning is going to be really hard but you must continue to practice. Is there anything in particular you need help with?

I second that, this post job wouldn't last 1 day in my dogs ears. I've had to resort to the medical bonding cement. Works great but can be messy.

You are making it way more complicated! #1 don't cut the backer rod, leave it for support!! Dude. #2nd do not cover what goes into ear with tape....dude, it very uncomfortable with tape in the ears!! The purpose of just the rod is to keep dog comfortable, not scratch it out when your not looking. My dogs ears are perfect!!!! Plus it rounds it out at the base and gives support to the rest of ear....your killing me!!
