Really cool to see Post Punk/Goth bass *_FINALLY_* get some coverage in an endless sea of mainstream rock/metal bass videos. As someone who has played bass for over 20 yrs., is an ardent fan of Post Punk/Goth and has covered these and other songs from bands like Siouxsie & The Banshees, Tones On Tail and Bauhaus, I can say that you hit the mark on getting the bass tone used on _'This Unrest',_ _'Land's End',_ _'Burning Skies'_ and _'Movement Of Fear'._ In my personal experience playing these songs, I also used a very similar setting with my pedals and added a touch of reverb too to thicken things up a bit. I also lowered my tone just a bit to dull the bright "bite" of new strings. Some might keel over of shock at what I'm about to say but, I also found it easier to emulate those tones by playing with strings that had a slight bit of "play" in them (a.k.a. *_slightly_* old strings). Not so much play that they sounded dull and dead but, just enough to lower the brightness. This allowed me to easier emulate the bass tones heard on albums/tracks from The Chameleons, Asylum Party, The Sisters Of Mercy, Joy Division, The Cure, The March Violets, Gary Numan and many, many more. Thank you for making this video and being one of the *_very few_* that dare to hand over the spotlight to the *_VASTLY_* underrated, overlooked and flat-out ignored Post Punk/Goth genres. Their time in the "spotlight" has been *_BEYOND_* overdue...

Seriously -- The Cure is borderline post-punk, but the guitar is just coloratura: so much melodic space for the bass to occupy. And their song Primary is two basses and no guitar.

Awesome video here. It's about time we see someone devote some time to an instructional video on Post Punk and Goth bass. Not to mention, it was so cool that you chose Tones On Tail and Siouxsie & The Banshees as opposed to taking a more "predictable route" that others might have taken by featuring a band like The Cure or Joy Division (both of which I love btw). Last, would it be possible for you to make a video showcasing your favorite Top 10 or 20 Post Punk and Goth Rock bassists? I think that would be a cool thing to watch.
@NickiTedesco
@NickiTedesco 6 жыл бұрын
Hello! I could definitely do a video like that! do you mean favorite bassist, or favorite basslines?
@VostoxVI
@VostoxVI 6 жыл бұрын
@@NickiTedesco Hello there! I meant favorite bass players originally but, I'll admit, I didn't even think of a "favorite basslines" video. That sounds like a really cool idea as well! So the question now is - why not both? It would be really cool to see a video on which players influenced you and your playing as well as another video featuring your favorite Post Punk and Goth basslines. I think it would be cool to see that seeing as how the Post Punk and Goth scene has been in a bit of a slump for quite some time now. It would be really cool to see some new videos that put the focus back on the music - which is the cornerstone of the Post Punk, Goth scene. They might even serve to introduce people to some new music they might never have heard but will enjoy and that's always a good thing.

@@NickiTedesco I'm looking forward to watching those videos! Very cool of you to decide in favor of making them. It's been a very long time since I've played my bass but, watching this video of yours along with a few others has gone a long way to reminding me just how much I miss playing. I hope these videos of yours will attract more and more Post Punk, Goth fans as it's quite rare nowadays to find Post Punk, Goth related videos that focus on the music and more importantly, how to play it (especially on bass). I'll certainly try to spread the word about them whenever I can.

This is excellent. I remember the first time finding out that I needed a bass chorus pedal for this tone (always hated the flanger sound for some reason) and mucking about with a used BOSS and my old GK 700RB. It took me forever to dial in but damn did I have some fun (and gain some tinnitus... ;) ). I love that you added shots of the settings, as so many folks forget to do that and it cuts down on guesswork. As an alternative, have you ever tried the electro-harmonix bass clone? It sadly lacks the stereo out (something I love when since I play guitar through my Boss chorus in a 2nd deathrock band), but allows you to filter the effect onto high end only vs fiull tonal range via toggle switch.

Hi. I'm used to the Adam Nolly crushing/clanking bass tone ( Metalcore/Djent/Deathcore ). In order to get that sound, I use a very low action with thin picks ( .6 ) and a strong attack on the strings. In order to get that coldwave/post punk sound, how should I setup my bass ? Which action height ? What kind of pick ?
@NickiTedesco
@NickiTedesco 2 жыл бұрын
That’s good to know! I’ve found that it doesn’t really matter. I think the low action helps with the NOLLY tone because the lines are fast and interviste and you want that clank. But with t Post punk, the players that pioneered it were necessarily gear heads. Any bass, any action, any pick will work. I have noticed however that Steve Severin used a music man on occasion so that’s why I used it here. But my music man is by no means low action. :) I hope this helps. Long story short, you don’t need a special bass or setup, you just need a chorus pedal and you can get it done

friends I need your help, I have a jaguar bass from squier (it has a precision pickup and another jazz bass) the situation is that I cannot have that metallic sound as in the intro of this video my bass only sounds like a double bass (like any bass with precision pickup) and with jazz I can only make it sound a little more acute but I can't find that "metallic" sound at some point I thought it was an Overdrive, but not how do you get it?
@TyrellCorp.-OffWorldCrow
@TyrellCorp.-OffWorldCrow 4 жыл бұрын
Try putting on new strings. The lighter the gauge, the "twangier" they will sound. Also, raising your tone a bit and setting your EQ mid/treble settings higher will give you a brighter sound. Experiment 'til you find a tone you like...

@@TyrellCorp.-OffWorldCrow Hello, thank you very much for answering on the Internet there is almost no information regarding the post punk tone and the truth is that you help me a lot, what strings do you recommend? and how could I get a sound like "Temptation" from the cure album pornography
@TyrellCorp.-OffWorldCrow
@TyrellCorp.-OffWorldCrow 4 жыл бұрын
@@shepardgamer1445 The brand isn't really all that important as long as they're new strings and the right gauge for your bass. Just make sure that you clean your strings every now and then with a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a cloth (try not to get any on the fretboard but, if you do, simply wipe it off). If you're unsure of the string gauge on your bass, take it to your local guitar shop and have them measure them for you. To get a Cure tone like that used on Pornography, this is what I do: try raising your lows and highs to about the same level (around 1 O'clock), and lower your mids to a 12 O'clock position. Also, add a little bit of Chorus and Reverb effects. if the tone is a bit too low or muddy, try raising your mids slightly. Experiment a little with your amp's EQ to dial in your tone after setting your EQ as I described. If you need to thicken up the sound, try adding a TINY bit of distortion. Hope this helps.

@@TyrellCorp.-OffWorldCrow One last question, how could I get the sound of the song Charlotte sometimes? postscript: my strings are the original ones they gave me next to the bass, how does old strings affect the sound? Thanks.
@TyrellCorp.-OffWorldCrow
@TyrellCorp.-OffWorldCrow 4 жыл бұрын
@@shepardgamer1445 If you can get the tone used on the Pornography album, it will pretty much be the same tone used on most of the early Cure albums and songs up until and including Wish. That includes Charlotte Sometimes as well. Depending on how old the strings are and how well they have been taken care of, it can affect the tone of your sound. Older strings will sound a bit dull and muted. New strings will sound very bright, sharp and "metallic". That doesn't mean that old strings need to be changed though, unless they are in bad shape. How old are your bass and strings? Sometimes, a dull muted tone is what you want on certain songs and with The Cure, that kind of tone is key. If you notice, the tone on many early Cure songs is not bright, sharp and metallic, it's kinda dull, low and muted. I have a few things I wanted to ask (which I should have done in the first place): 1. Is your bass new or used? 2. What kind of amp do you use? Does it have an EQ and if it does, does it have knobs for Bass, Mid and High? 3. Do you have any pedals? If you have more questions, ask me and I will try to help out more. I don't mind you asking.
