How often do you do water changes with growing Pothos in your aquariums? And for a non dirted tank do you gravel vac?

Thanks for all the info. Just put mine in yesterday! Can’t wait to see how they do! I put a whole plant in my 75 gallon. I still need to put one more on the other side. My 2 goldfish seems to love it, they favor that side in just one day. I’ll hopefully keep an update

Only 1 minute in and I'm genuinely excited for the information. Haven't started my aquarium because Id rather not spend another small wad of cash on aquarium plants-I've already got 4 thriving pothos in the room anyways. Knowing I can use what I already have to get this tank started... Huge step forward my man, thank you!

I did this with a bunch of pothos cuttings twist tied together. I draped the plant down over the side of a large terra cotta planter that became an outdoor pond. The fish fry love hiding in the roots, too! A natural decoration for the “pot pond”!

Do be careful if using prepotted plants from a store-wash REALLY well. Sometimes growers use chemical fertilizers which aren’t compatible with fish. I only use cuttings from my plants, where the only fert I use is old tank water.
@blackjackcwc Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up!
@alexjohnson4567 Жыл бұрын
Would you need to completely remove all 'store originating' soil and completely clean out the roots? Or, would I be able to mostly (80%) clean off the dirt, then let the tank cycle out anything toxic prior to adding the fish? Thanks in advance!
@amandabyrd9349 Жыл бұрын
@@alexjohnson4567 wash them thoroughly. The problem with using store bought is that you don’t know for sure what type of fertilizers have been used, so get them as clean as you can, and perhaps soak the roots in old tap water for a week, then another wash before putting into the tank. That’s why I prefer to root cuttings from my plant. I start the cutting with water I’ve treated with prime (chlorine can inhibit root growth), then wait until I’ve got 5 or 6 inches. When you start developing feeder roots on those initial roots, you’re close to planting, so get your next round of cuttings ready.
@alexjohnson4567 Жыл бұрын
I feel ya, just gotta let the toxins soak out fully and let the plant do it's thing! Much appreciated, I've been stocking pothos from a variety of locations for this matter as well.@@amandabyrd9349

Been doing this since 2017. I grew a one leaf cutting in HOB filter into a 30 foot vine, so I know it works. When I took water sample to store she said "How do you have no nitrates. All tanks have some." I didn't tell her my secret.

What I did, and it might work for you, Once the roots become long enough to reach your substrate, put a weight on the root to encourage the rooting into the substrate. What Chris did not say , Yes the Pothos will consume nitrates, however if the roots are free floating they will not perform to their full potential of nitrate removal. Once however, your Pothos is rooted in your substrate, the Pothos becomes established.. More Nitrates are removed by the Pothos from an established Pothos than those with free floating roots. In my experience.

@palmer aqutics I know this is an old video but I've got a tip for you. There's an incredible product that really encourages full plants. And full disclosure, I am not a fishkeeper but I have a bunch of houseplants and an outdoor garden. I noticed some of your pothos vines on your large tank had bare spots. It happens ALL THE TIME to anyone who keeps pothos. Lol. You could A-cut those and reroot those bare nodes and they will start new vines or B-get some crazy keiki cloning paste. It works great to get those nodes working again and will fill in the bare spots, giving you more leaves for photosynthesis. It's a paste that goes no the actual node so i don't think it would effect your fish as long as its keep out-of the water. It's also not water soluble... Also, to anyone who doesn't know much about pothos, trimming your vines encourages new vines to split off from lower in the plant. Every time you clip the end of a vine, it sends a hormone back down towards the soil and tells the plant that it needs to activate an older node. If you trim often, you could hypotheticaly have a new vine split from every node, making your plant fuller. Also, I know you mentioned your partner is the plant person so I'm sure she knows all this but hopefully this can help you or someone in your audience if they have any issues. Pothos are incredibly awesome plants....and finally, try an N'joy pothos. They are one of my favorite and SO pretty.

I put a couple of cuttings in my tank about 2 months ago and it's filled with leaves and insane roots! I don't need any fertilizer and the lighting comes from a west facing window. I know this is an older video, but I figure i would chime in. I recently did this and it seems to be working out great! I bought a potted pothos from home depot and it was just like you showed. A bunch of little sections with decent roots. I busted one section off and washed off the dirt and I was surprised at how fast the roots began to thrive. It's in a 10 gallon tank that has a betta and a siamese algae eater along with some assassin snails and 1 nerite. The water has not been changed much in months and it already has quite a bit of Java fern, duck weed and another rapid growing plant I can't remember the name of lol I'm doing all this though because I'm about to start a dirted tank (29 gallon) and I will be transferring about half of everything into the 29 gallon along with the other 3/4 of the pothos after the tank is a bit established. Anywho, thanks for the info, I had seen other videos of yours that gave me this idea and it has been great so far, I can't wait to get my 29 gallon going because I will be doing a more pacific island/asian theme for my 10 gallon betta tank with bamboo and a nice Asian style hut with plants glued to it. I love this hobby and everyday I seem to be drawn in just a bit more.
