I just flushed the system and bleed it, MAN its like a brand new truck again. I want to say thanks for your vid it really helped me out.

Just did mine today with Mobil 1 thanks to this video. Honestly, the hardest part was getting the spring clamp undone and done again in the right spot. My pump was howling like a wolf after taking a hard turn. Now, it's back to nice and quiet again. Super simple process, not overly messy, just put some towels under your hose connection and you're good to go! Did by myself, about 6 lock to lock turns, about 10 brake pumps, and still under 2 quarts total. Old fluid wasn't terrible looking, but also at least 10 years old. Cost of tubing was about $2.50, used old gallon milk jug for catch can, and Mobil 1 ATF from Pep Boys at about $7 a quart.

Good video. I'm a retired hydraulic guy with over 30 years experience I can appreciate how you stressed to keep oil in the pump. Other videos posted allow and encourage people to run the pump until dry. When you hear the pump growling (cavitation) it's sucking air instead of oil. This causes lack of lubrication under pressure and induces air in the system. Now it's time to flush my Duramax. Thanks,

Great video! Very detailed in step by step procedure. Just did mine on a 2001 F350 7.3 Old fluid looked more grayish but probably because power steering fluid added to system. Took me 3 quarts to see completely red with clear hose. Brakes nice and hard, but power steering pump still whining. Guess it's time for a new power steering pump!

hey trey finally got around to doing the PS fluid deal.. I did it just like you showed but when my helper turned steering wheel i got no fluid in bucket.. so i had her pump the brakes at a slow steady pace and that seemed to do the trick.. I used a braided line so able to see the stuff coming out and put the clamp on but still got some leakage from somewhere.. i did over flow the thing a couple time. . mine, 2003 PS, only took about 2.5 qts till i got new fluid. My filter is stock so i remove the top housing and hose to the crank vent connection part and just left off during operation. I could see turbo wheel spinning but at idle there was no sound. put my hand close and man can you feel the air flow.. all in all it worked like a charm.. thanks for the good instruction.

I am about to do this procedure tomorrow on my 2000 F350 7.3 due to an accidental puncture of my power steering cooler. I was able to JB Weld the cracked inlets where the hoses attach to the cooler. I was only able to find Valvoline Max Life full synthetic at WalMart for about $17 for a gallon. I also punctured my AC condenser at the same time but found a used condenser, 31 row transmission cooler and a power steering cooler from a 2004 6.0 F250 at the local salvage yard for $150.

Well, my 7.3 is an E350 van, so it appears to be different. Has the larger hose going from the power steering reservoir to the power steering pump. Then looks like it has pressure line coming off of the pump, which screws into the pump, that line leads to a power steering oil cooler then there's a 3/8" line going from the cooler back up to the power steering reservoir. So I don't really know how to go abt doing the power steering flush with this set up

The 7.3l (and 6.0l, I'm assuming) utilizes a "hydrobooster" instead of a vacuum-based brake booster, due to the lack of applicable vacuum lines in diesel engines (I'm not a mechanic; don't know specifics). This hydrobooster receives pressurized fluid from the power steering pump to provide necessary brake boost. If your power-steering pump (or fluid) isn't up to par, your brake pedal might feel "spongey" or otherwise not stiff. Make sense? :)

The blue 6637 air filter cover is by Covers by Pete at former website truck-mods.com - which appears NLA. Anyone know where I can get one like it?

I forgot to mention, the power steering cooler from the 6.0 is bigger than the OEM on my 7.3 Would anybody recommend me installing just the power steering cooler from the 6.0 only or should I go ahead and run them both together in a series for extra cooling? I would imagine that the 6.0 cooler alone would be sufficient since it is already bigger than the 7.3 cooler. What do you think?

And here I was about to just siphon out from the Reservoir tank and refill same amount with new Power Steering fluid... pretty disappointed that this looks like such a pain in the ass. I guess even the best engines have some annoying maintenance procedures.

Okay so I doubt you are going to respond soon since this is a few years old, but I'll ask anyway- what if there is a lot bubbles and I can't turn the wheel anymore? I'm scared I mess things up even more! It sounds really, really bad!

It looks like you're working on a 7.3L? You make a statement that any Trans fluid that is OK for the vehicle is OK to use in this (sic) motor. You meant OK for the PS system? You state that you are going to use Mercon V. Please provide Ford specs where Mercon V is authorized for a Super Duty. :-). I have NEVER seen authorization use Mercon V in a SD transmission. 4R100 or 5R110W. - 'just say'n.

Automatic only- Ford TSB 06-14-4. Ford authorized use of Mercon V formulations in 2006.

@@gregoryney5680 Hello Gregory, That TSB pertains to the Transmission, only. Nothing about steering. And BTW, I would NEVER use V in an R4100, either. See, Ford knew the warranty on the last of the 4100s (circa 2003) was well expired. No sweat on them when the seals go out. ACTION Beginning immediately all automatic transmission / transaxle applications requiring MERCON(R) can now be serviced using MERCON(R) V or MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON(R) / MERCON(R) V. After July 1, 2007, MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid will no longer be manufactured, therefore, availability of this fluid will only continue for however long it takes to deplete what remains in inventory.
