Hello, My dad was a very wonderful Bluegrass fiddle player. I have became interested in learning...I have played the flute in school and played it for five years, loved it......I'm now 51, our house burned when I was 16 and I lost my flute and never bought another. However, I've invested in a very cheap fiddle/violin too learn and want you too know that I love your teaching style and think I can learn a lot from you ! Thank you for taking the time!

I have to say Laura, thank you so much for these video's!!! I started my first violin lesson last night after a few weeks of watching your video's and practicing on my own and my new teacher was very surprised at how much I knew already and has even given me the challenge of starting off with the Twinkle Twinkle Theme on top of strengthening the exercises I already learned from watching your video's as well as some of her own. I walked away feeling confident from a lesson (and I took a lot when I was younger and even quit due to comments from those teachers as my progress was slow). I am very excited to continue to learn and watch more of your video's. :) Thank you again!

Thank you Kayla. Don't ever lose confidence in yourself....we all have challenges in our playing, and some things will be harder than others, but its those very challenges that make it worthwhile in the end. Keep watching, practice, and most important HAVE FUN!!! Good Luck.

I like the way you think... I have found that my 40 years of guitar playing and the in depth study of music theory has truly created a great "crossover" effect to the violin. Of course, the guitar is nowhere near as "sensitive" as the violin (in pretty much every aspect) but as far as practice techniques, scales, modes, the circle of 5ths, etc.... I have found these same exercises to be equally helpful.... and not to forget to apply these same types of "thought-processing" to the bow. I had no idea that the bow was just as important as picking a guitar with a pick (plectrum) , fingerstyle, hybrid picking (combo of pick and fingers) and alternate picking and hybrid string-skip picking along with how many notes per string, even if you can find the notes elsewhere. The musical theory and application of musical theory really is without end... and at times I have to stop myself from getting too technical and just try enjoying the music all by itself. I would imagine that you know exactly what I am speaking on.... I wish you were my teacher, but I don't do "online" teaching too well. I like the one-on-one style of lessons, with the rapport that is developed.

YES, you must put the rhythms into the same tempo you want to perform them at. As I explained, you can use the "super-crunch" to push your speed limits even faster, and also, I like to do the rhythms a little bit faster than what you plan to perform it at. That way, you have a little "room to spare". --Lora

I'm trying to learn hokum bowing for the fiddle toon the orange blossom special. My lack of ability to identify beat and rhythm is getting in the way of achieving hokum bowing. Being the fact fiddling relies heavily on rhythm and beat in the bow, beat and rhythm is something I highly need to acquire. Would you have any suggestions as to how I may achieve identifying beat and rhythm Red Desert Violin? Would you also happen to have any videos on finger flexibility in the right hand for detache? Last, would you have any suggestions for how to make bowing center easier for people with abnormally long arms like me? Thanks In advance.

Hey Oasis Videos, first off, it's good that you recognize that the geometry is different for short versus tall people. I am short, so that is my specialty.....but I have observed lots of my tall friends, and the biggest difference I see is that they move their right should much more liberally than short people, and they cannot use the "square" as a guideline to learn "Greasy Elbow". Sorry, I'm using terms that are taught in my online violin lessons. (you might want to check those out: www.reddesertviolin.com/onlinelessons The lessons go into LOTS of detail about what you are asking. Finger flexibility: this is a motion called "colle". It is a bowing, yes, but it also describes that flexible finger motion used in bow changes. I have a video on my channel called, "Colle Exercises with a pencil" or something like that. Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZvClatjj8yEjbc Last of all: I do a series of rhythm "workshops" in my newsletter. To subscribe, go to my blog, and you should get an invitation to subscribe to the newsletter. It will help you TONS with your rhythm. My blog is www.RedDesertViolin.com Good luck!!!

All throughout the video, i notice notes still ringing. Like when you play the Suzuki piece, i hear the some open notes still sounding after you finish playing the notes - example at 19:39. Is allowing the notes to continue to ring what you want to do...or should you be stopping the notes? I hear the same thing even when you bring the violin down from playing position, sometimes - i hear some last notes still resonating. I bring this up because i am learning violin in my spare time by using what i learn on the net, so i have to observe and ask questions when i notice something i am not sure about. I heard you self criticize your own playing in a lesson when you said, "That was sloppy!" Then you replayed the line and nailed it. So i can assume you are open to comments. Having said that, is it possible the notes i'm hearing are due to a ...i don't know how to say it...sort of a "lazy" left hand? Don't take me the wrong way, please. I am really not trying to offend you. Thanks.
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Robbiedaug! LOL....you did not offend me, plus you were so considerate, I couldn't be offended anyway. No, your observation was actually a COMPLIMENT. I teach a whole video about "ringy notes".....they are a good thing! It's sort of like the violinst's equivalent of "frets". We don't have frets like a guitar, but we have ringy notes all over the place, even in high positions, and that helps us to navigate. Search my channel for "intonation" or maybe it's under "ringy notes".....and you will learn THE SINGLEMOST VALUEABLE principle for violin playing. (well, ok, it's in the top 10) If you can train yourself to hear and find the ringy notes, it will give you a serious edge. Also, if you get serious and want to make some serious progress, consider my online lessons. (no pressure.....there is plenty of free stuff here....but the online lessons are organized, systemmatic, and thorough. Happy fiddling! Keep up the good work!
