In this mini-lesson, I go over some ways to practice learning and developing lip trills, specifically on the trombone, although these concepts could definitely be applicable to other brass instruments. This video is for intermediate to advanced students and performers wanting to learn or improve their lip trills. Feel free to leave any questions, comments, or requests down below and if you found this video useful, please LIKE it, SHARE it, and maybe SUBSCRIBE to my channel! I post educational videos about trombone and music EVERY FRIDAY.

Interesting! I've never heard the whistle thing before. I'll have to give it a try.

The idea came from someone telling me that air flow with the tongue is similar to changing pitches when whistling...fast-forward to a few years later when learning lip trills, it made sense to apply the whistling technique!

The whistling analogy is a false one. The size of the resonance chamber determines the pitch of the whistle. It has nothing to do with air speed.

What an idea! My brother and I were always fascinated with embouchures and searching for the "perfect" one growing up, so I'll put this on my list of videos for sure. FYI it's such an intimidating topic since there are so many different opinions and approaches out there! I'll do it anyway 😎Thanks for the request!

I take pride in my lip trills , the amount of practise is unbelievable. But so worth all the fails when i get them purring . At the moment ive started getting the DF lip trill . The way we can use them if we get good nuff at them in so many ways . Mini trill to lead into phrasing in the middle of a solo or esiecially on a blues the end of a bar . Its not good enough to just be able to get them , knowing how and when takes much practise but then again what doesnt .

nice, John. Trills on brass instruments are also just great for building the embouchure, air support, and flexibility...of course they can help with high range and endurance

The tongue position actually does not change the air flow through the lip aperture. (unless you blosk it completely as in articulation) the lip tension and posture controls the pitch the tongue movements are related to that. It has nothing to do with air speed. Moving the tongue alone will not actually change the pitch unless the lips change.

Nice man! You double on trombone too? As you are developing the trill, do yourself a favor and make sure it comes from the tongue (as much as possible) and not the jaw. I had to go back from the beginning to relearn that and it’s still kind of there. Good luck though, that’s a real tough piece!

I'd say it took a few months of doing this a little bit (almost) every day. I had been playing for some years at the time though. I think there's a couple of videos that I took when they were starting to develop, here's one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2q6pXSbfsqtd9k
