I've been playing for 2 years now and I wouldn't be able to do what I do without your lessons, man ! And I really like that kind of video where you explain how to improve training and techniques.. you're a great guy, long live Carl 👑

Súper advice, Carl. Thank you for confirming what I’ve been doing for the last 8 years. I was 10 years old when I received my first guitar. However, I’m almost 65 and it took me until I was 56 to decide I needed to change up the way I practice. Your counsel in this video is spot on. I only wish I’d known how powerful the habit and technique would be LONG before now!

I'm so grateful for your videos. I keep getting better because of them. A year ago I started learning chords and now I'm practicing Pink Floyd's solos. And I just love practicing. Thank you♡

Ryan Haydon I’ve made peace with the fact that the days when I could play guitar for as long as I want have long gone... I’m so grateful to get 30 mins in without my toddler turning my amp or pedal knobs or grabbing the tuning pegs or the stalk lol I hear you...it’s hard work for dads to shred but it has to be done 🤘🏼

I do like 10 minutes at a time. Write everything in a notebook. What I did what I'm better st what I want to do today. Daily goals. I think kids should learn very early on that everyone needs private time. If they're old enough to play a small scale keyboard, I'd go with that. And to me "old enough" is ASAP. 2 birds, one stone. I'd make it a privilege. If they're good they can sit and help you play. Give them a spoon and a pot to bang on. No kid will turn that down. Even toddlers. Use that metronome and I guarantee you, at some point, the child will follow you following the click. Can't go around it. We are wired to play music together. Buddy Rich played pro at 18 months. Piano is easiest to get theory on. You've seen the Chinese with their kids who can REALLY play by the time they're 6? You might like Battle Hymn of the tiger mother. Got mine from. the library. They're hardcore into discipline, while we Americans are lazy and very lax. :) But they tend to have very successful, devoted kids that have discipline. No sense in wasting all that brain power doing nothing with it. Good time for languages, too. 9,500 times easier to learn as a kid or even a teen.

Great advice Carl. I just started practicing alternate fast picking after i got my first and the cheapest electric guitar included with amp. After i got this guitar i started alternate fast picking and i followed the advice from this youtube teacher called Claus Levin. I only practice one lick in 7 months in minimum 4 hrs a day and i found this 4 notes lick from Paul Gilbert intense rock 2 tutorial video and it really works as in i can play the same speed like Paul Gilbert does. Its not that clean like Paul Gilbert how he played but im so happy i can play it same speed like he does and im so glad that i follow the advice. So i hope some of your students wanna improve fast do the same like i did because it really works.

Everything you’ve said is true, except you didn’t mention the “dreaded” metronome!!! Do everything you’ve mentioned with the metronome and you will pickup/learn/remember/memorize things you’ve worked on that much quicker. Thanks again Carl.

Interesting idea. I’ve been doing this with my grammar and songwriting practice. Every time I use the restroom, I’ll work on a given writing activity. However, I can’t say for sure if it’s helped me internalize things any faster than material I work on for longer periods but only twice per week. I’ll have to try it with a musical task rather than a strictly literary one.

Heartily agree with the value and benefit of practice that is comprised of multiple short, focused sessions through out the day. I find the longer I practice a song or a single skill, technique or lick, the quality of my playing deteriorates. Previously, I would grind through it gaining less and less the longer I tried. Now, as soon as I hit a plateau, I move on to something else and return to the thing I practiced previously no more than 1 day later. Thanks for reinforcing this approach. It has accelerated my learning dramatically.

"Your brain says, 'this is kinda what you are--what you do'...." I need that on a poster ^_^ Thank you for the great insights. It's so simple that it seems like common sense; but, it's something we don't think about 'til someone (like you) brings it to our attention: 5 minutes a day is better than 30 minutes twice a week.

If you haven’t already...the solo at the end of “Who’s Crying Now” by Journey
@gabrielabernal51816 жыл бұрын
I practice a few minutes throughout the day and I am able to learn much faster than practicing for hours once a week. For example, I try to learn the first part of a solo for 10 or 15 minutes, then go back to study or do other things (it can be frustrating sometimes when I don't get something so I leave the guitar lol) Then come back and practice what I learned before and see if I can remember it. If I get it then I proceed to learn a little more of the solo. This way I also give my brain time to memorize what I learn.

If you want to learn songs whilst also improving technique then I strongly advise listening to Andy Timmons and Nick Johnston. Both guys write great songs but with some amazing technique and licks that will definitely improve your playing. If you can play some of their stuff to a reasonable level then you’ll really see the benefits.

Do you find that improves your playing, or does it just make you better at playing those songs?

It has definitely made my playing better. Plus it made me learnt techniques which I realised later considered hard. Since I never gave thought and just wanted to play the song it made me enjoy learning that stuff. What about you?
@gkf96 жыл бұрын
I've started to try learn songs more now than specific practice on stuff. Hoping that the songs I'm learning will have enough technical stuff in it to help me improve whilst playing.

It works for memorising anything in life brother! If you can make some time practice first thing in the morning (30min/30min) and then repeat before you go bed (30min/30min) I did this for 2-3months and I can actually blag that I'm a decent player now

Good advice, thank you for it! But I have a little problem, sometimes I can forget how to play some solos which I didn’t play for a month or so, and I can’t play them as fast as I used and sometimes I even need to practice them again, to remember the technique. What should I do?

I find that scheduling Practices doesn't work for me because that makes it feel more like an obligation. Once it stops becoming fun then I don't learn anything.
@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr28235 жыл бұрын
10.00 says you're ADD, right? Ok, well, "adulting" has obligations. :) If you want to get good, you have to do what the guys that are good do. Too bad if it's boring. lol. That's called being an adult. You do the right thing without whining. It'll be good for you. You'll get to enjoy it, too. Bernard Purdie once said he still plays drums at 40 bpm. This is REALLY SLOW. But the man can play after probably 60 years playing. So I do what he says. At least until I can beat him. :) Get a notebook and commit to some daily goals. Learn a simple song, new chords. Some theory. Write what you need to work on. Spend 10 minutes at a time on it. Use your phone clock so you don't just stare at the phone. Tell me how much worse a player you got to be after doing that for a month. Never touch a guitar without a metronome on.
@pricegamingfivem5 жыл бұрын
If you want to learn fast. Don't make your practice time work. Make it fun. I've never sat down and practiced intentionally for like 2 hours. I just pick up and play. Then I'm like "I want to learn this song" I grab it off of youtube and learn it. Then I play long to the track. By then it has been about 2 hours. Just make your practice time to not feel like work
