I always teach my students a simple rhythmic phrasing for scales to get them emphasising the chord tones within the scale. In a quarter, eighth, eighth rhythm, it goes R - R 2 3 - 3 4 5 - 6 7 R on the way up, as many octaves as you want. Descending would be R - 7 6 5 - 5 4 3 - 3 2 R, however many octaves. So, on the way up, you don’t repeat the 5th because you have two scale tones to get through before you arrive at the next chord tone, the root. And on the way down, you don’t repeat the root because you have two scale tones to get through before arriving at the 5th. It works for any seven note scale or mode other than Super Locrian. It really helps people to understand where the resolving tones lie within any given scale shape on their instrument. And that instils greater improvisational instincts, much earlier in the game as compared to when I used to just teach the shape and be like “now go ahead and improvise while I play these chords for you.”
