Fabulous. Those are great additions to your library. I rarely have a student work these books from cover to cover. We do a few, then we pivot to other etudes. Then we come back, do a few more....etc. It prevents boredom, and I think it gives the hand a chance to calibrate what it has learned. Good luck!

How do you work things like this into lessons? Warm up time? Actually part of the lesson? What proportions? Five minutes for this then onward? Ten minutes?

At first, Sevcik takes a significant part of lesson time, until the student "gets it", and I no longer have to hear every line of every page. If they are getting the technique, I just check for tension, rhythm, accuracy, intonation. So, maybe it starts out using a good 20 minutes of the lesson. But eventually, only 5 minutes.

Hi Lora. As I am hearing impaired (you have helped me with this previously) I cannot hear a metronome above the sound of the violin. I do tend to speed up. Have you any ideas about timing without a metronome other that of going through a piece of music without actually playing it, just to get it in the head so to speak. I did hear of a bounce metronome but believe this only available on line or a phone. I thought these exercise will help placing fingers correctly - vital when you don't hear sharps and flats.

Have you tried a vibrating metronome? You strap it to your arm or leg and it will vibrate the beat. I don't know how well they work as I've never tried them, but they may be just what you're looking for. You could also try a 'silent metronome' (I think that's the bounce metronome you mentioned). Those are purely visual though so they may be more suited to drummers and recording studios, not so much violinists.

I took notice of the prices aswel; those Soundbrenner metronomes are outrageously expensive with it just being a tiny motor, a basic logic board and a plastic strap. I hope, however, that they will revitalize the vibrating metronome market allowing cheaper competition to join in. There's no excuse for a digital metronome to cost more than 15 bucks.

Hi Lora, Thank you very much for your lessons, they are one of the best here and I learned a lot from you. However I have a comment to statement "exercise #1 is played strictly on A string, exercise #2 strictly on D string, e.t.c.." In my copy (which is not historical scan but a new edition) there is written something like "do the same on D string, G string and E string" at the end of the exercise. So I suppose the exercise should be played on all strings. Or am I wrong?

Hi Richard! Hmmm....yes, you can play all the exercises on every string. Ii didn't mean to imply that you will only play the exercises on one string....but when I listened to the video, that's exactly what it sounds like. I meant that keeping the exercises on ONE STRING makes them extremely simple....but I didn't mean to imply that they should ONLY be done on one string. Sorry about that. I wish I could pin this comment to the top....but I haven't figured out how to pin comments yet!!! Thanks for bringing this up!

I don't think you need to do it in every possible KEY, but it's great if you do it in varying finger patterns, and on each string. For instance, the way it is printed is in the key of C, which uses a low 2 on the A string. Keep that finger pattern no matter what string you practice it on. THEN, you can practice it with a High 2 finger pattern. (C# on the A string) THEN, you could practice it with a Bb and Eb on the A string. (so there would be a half step between 3 and 4) You could spend 5 years on this etude, so don't let yourself get stuck on it, but you do want to exploit it for maximum value.

Hi Jorge, I'm glad you found the video helpful. As far as your question about good method books for beginners, that is a very difficult question to answer, because so much of it depends on your background and your available options. Let me just say YES Sevcik is wonderful for beginners, but not total beginners. A total beginner needs to focus on getting their posture, the bow hold and decent bow control mastered and then they could start Sevcik or a simplified version of Sevcik, such as my left hand speed and dexterity exercises which are available on KZbin. Other great things for beginners are the Elements 2000 books, or Doflein books, or the instructional books by Robert Frost. Another book called so Essential Elements is also good. There are zillions of great books for beginers to learn from....what you really need though is INSTRUCTION in the form of private lessons or video lessons. In addition of course there are the Suzuki books, but those are only effective if you have good guidance in the form of a private teacher or my online violin lessons, and I'm sure you know where to find those. How does a student work on achieving that 'quiet' left hand i.e. leaving fingers down when needed and/or not having fingers flying in the air especially when playing notes on two strings? The key to a "quiet" left hand is to develop finger independence.....so that when one finger has to do something difficult, the other fingers mind their business and stay uninvolved. The way to develop this is SEVCIK, but also to practice slowly. If necessary, do the exercise without the bow, holding the left hand with the right hand.....to help other fingers to hold still. I also teach finger independence in all of my online Suzuki courses. You can find them here: www.reddesertviolin.com LOTS of help there for adult beginners, even a free membership that helps you organize all the free stuff I have!

Is it normal to feel pain with this exercises? The requirement to keep the fingers down causes some pain in my hand when using the four finger. I feel I have to stretch my hand to much to keep the first and second finger in position, and reach the position for the fourth finger. Also, the book says that it should be played both detaché and legato, what kind of bowing would be better to start with the exercises?

+D. Løan Definitely not. Pain is never normal or acceptable. I think detache' is a little easier, don't you? So I would start with whichever is easiest. Your pain is undoubtedly caused by fingers co-contracting and fighting against each other. Try very hard to relax your left hand, even if you have to put down your bow and "help" manipulate your left hand with your right hand.....or, try the exercises in guitar position, obviously with no bow, maybe plucking. Between pain and holding the other fingers down, I would choose to let the fingers pop up. It's not worth an injury.

Hello , can you please give me tips on how to keep my bow from sliding up to the finger board while I am playing , this is a ongoing problem for me, has my bow got to much rosin or not enough.. I'm stumped?

It probably doesn't have anything to do with rosin. Well, I mean, that CAN add to the problem, but I don't think it is the root cause. Your bow is most likely sliding due to it being crooked. Take note if it is worse on an up bow, or a down bow. If it is worse on a downbow, that CONFIRMS that it is being caused by crooked bow. Search my channel for "Crooked Bow"....or maybe the video is called "straight bow".....search for both. I give exercises for correcting this problem!

Hi Bishal That's a great question, but I'm afraid I can't give you a firm answer. The fact is, you can approach this material many different ways, in many different orders. It would take a really long time for me to put it in my recommended order.....HOWEVER, it is a very worthwhile project.....and once I get that done, I will post it on my blog, which is reddesertviolin. (with the usual dot com after it) Keep an eye on that blog.....it will probably be a month before I can get it written.

Interesting analogy, Mohammad! I do like the comparison to a dictionary. My only complaint is that when teachers to that, the student never plays through the whole book....and so they might be missing lessons they need. But, if the teacher really knows what they are doing, I suppose they could spot the problem, and then find the "cure" in the dictionary! :-)
