How to Practice Vibrato + Vibrato Tips

I love talking about vibrato and thought I would address some main questions I've been getting recently.
How do I speed up my vibrato? Why is my violin and/or bow shaking while doing vibrato? How do I even practice vibrato? Etc....
I wanted to start by showing you two methods to practice vibrato and to help you get a faster vibrato. Then, jump into answering some of these questions I've been getting about vibrato.

This is incredible. I play guitar and these techniques are totally transferable. Using the wall to stabilize the instrument translates to finger control and making sure the vibraro doesn't affect pitch. The vibrato alignment with rhythm is also epic. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and over 20 years experience.

I am on Suzuki 7, and still have trouble with vibrato. I just cannot get the hang of it.

Start slowly! Try with some easier songs in like book 2 like Chorus or Waltz.

Great video. Quick question, how do you do a vibrato on Low 1E? I don't seem to have enough space between my 1st finger and the nut to really move much. Question? suggestions? I have been playing for about a year and a half and have just started vibrato practice a few months ago. I can play simple songs well enough and now vibrato is the next big challenge, and what a challenge it is. I would love to get your take on it? Thanks!

Great question! To keep it really simple, stay as loose as possible. And donut spaghetti is super important!

I've been watching your thumb. Do you have your thumb sticking out, parallel to the floor so the neck rests on the thumb? I was watching two other professional violinist the other day, Hilary Hahn and Ray Chan and it looks like they just let the neck rest in the the area between the thumb and index finger with the thumb pointing way up.

Thanks for the usefull information! I got the motion right, but the problem is that i can't keep my finger on the string! It keeps moving around or even off the string when i try to relax it. How can i keep a balance? ")

The tip of the finger should be firmly placed on the string. The finger moves above it for vibrato.

Try it starting in 3rd or 4th position. Think about the rest of the fingers being loose and “waving”.

Those are the exact reasons!! I also love that it can play everything from gorgeous, tear-jerking melodies to lively, make-you-wanna-dance fiddle tunes! Playing the violin just makes me happy! It’s one of the toughest but most rewarding instruments to learn. ❤️
