The slow vibrato where the notes go above and below are very useful if you want to play indian classical repertoire. That sort of sound is very intentional and common in that type of music.

From my experience, when students learn wrist vibrato in the third position, after returning to the first position, they often wobble their wrist. I started teaching arm vibrato first, and then, once they understand that vibrato is mainly done through the finger stretch (knuckles), I guide them through these wrist exercises... btw. great video!!

@KrispyKremers2 ай бұрын
It doesn't take years. I learned it in a week. Best way I learned it was to put the tip of my thumb onto that middle section on my middle and ring fingers, then grab a pencil or colored pencil and do the same thing but with the pencil wedged between your thumb and fingers. Put your pinky up onto the top of the pencil. Practice this position a little then grab a bow and do the exact same thing
@carletto.spitaleri2 ай бұрын
@@KrispyKremers i know too how to keep in the hand the bow, but the fact is that now I'm trying to improve in some specific technique like the picchettato and to do it I may change the position a bit, and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right

I think the biggest mistakes teachers make is to insist that the wrist remain straight. Basically all of the joints in the hand must be movable. If you have a stiff ankle then you can‘t walk or run, a stiff wrist you can‘t vibrate. I remember Joseph Silverstein saying, the hand should feel like it has no bones. Great video.

I absolutely love this method! I'm a teacher as well and was looking for a good way to explain vibrato, but I couldn't find a good video to go with how I was taught. I was taught to keep the wrist loose, but slowly work into the arm vibrato with a loose wrist. I feel like this video works well with your part two on vibrato from 7 years ago. You don't really say it in this video but when you go into playing the excerpt from Thais Meditation I can see you combining the wrist and arm vibrato and that's what I was looking for!

I learned to do vibrato (the motion of it, anyway) by putting rice in a small pill bottle and holding its bottom and top between my thumb and pinky finger, then shaking it backward very loosely to learn to control the speed and amount of backward movement of my hand/wrist while also learning to loosen my wrist as I did so. I highly recommend this exercise at the beginning of every practice session until it becomes an effortless movement without having to think of all of the mechanics of it.

There are 3 vibrato techniques you need to master to get your performance. This video explains one. Can you do other videos with the other two. I always had the arm technique down and had a master class with Dave Cerutti to improve my hand vibrato. (Every violinist has their own idea of whether the vibrato should be bellow or above the not, I agree with Cerutti it should be above but what really matters is intonation of couse.) Thank you.

I have been playing this instrument for about 5 minutes. What I have found though just with what is comfortable to me. I balance the neck on the fleshy part of my palm, and instead of moving my wrist. I sort of squeeze with the finger, and the flesh part like the neck isn't there. Then when I hold the bow softly it will bounce sort of as well, and makes it a little more intense. I hope I articulated that properly.

And the way my teacher got me practice scales actually was vibrato.. If intonation is good enough.. I can learn vibrato. So it's day 2 since she showed me this knocking motion (cleaning fingerboard method.. Will get a tissue in the future.. Like the idea). But honestly.. My arms hrt.. Poor muscles.. (my arms hurt when I braid my hair.. So I guess it will get better..) yeah looks easy.. Doesn't it.. 😂

There is no such this as the best vibrato. Vibrato is a reflection of your soul and taste. How efficiently connected the fingers of the violinist to his soul is a different story. This is not just about tecnique, but about a given or not given talent.
