This was quite helpful! I've counted eighth note triplets as 1-trip-let, 2-trip-let and so on, but didn’t know how to count quarter note triplets. Thanks for this!

That's a more complex way to do it, as a guitarist I like things as simple as possible! A quarter note is 2 eighth notes so you basically play the first eighth note, miss the second and that's your first quarter note of the triplet done. Do this 3 times and that's the triplet done in perfect timing 😁

Im trying to learn the new tears of the kingdom theme tune (new zelda game) and part of the theme has minum triplets against quavers, it's really tricky and driving me nuts, so this video was so helpful :-)

Thanks Jim, very useful (and precise)! - Do you have any tip and/or exercise to be able to keep the count/clapping steady on the main beat without getting thrown by the triplet feel? Eg. for piano or drumming. Thanks again!

@@JimClarkSaxophonist MOST definitely. Though I've mastered it already (after a long time experimenting as a youth), this was the SIMPLEST and most effective explanation. It starts, like most musical concepts, with SIMPLICITY. EXCELLENT!

Yes there's a difference. 3/4 time has 3 beats every measure. Quarter note triplet are 3 notes of equal value played over 2 beats. So you could play three quarter note triplets in 3/4 time and have 1 beat left over!

incase ur talking about time signature 3 notes grouped = 2 beats in the practice ur learning to group together triplet quarters without it being directly on beat so you'll play 6 notes (2 triplet groups) 2+2=4

Feel is so important, so if you have that, it's a good start! Also, If you can play 8th note triplets - dividing each beat into three , that's the place to begin. Good luck!
