@@kimgrantphotography hi Kim thanks for this super video that is also pedagogical. I am a university instructor but my photography and videography interest and skills (from a very low level imho) exploded during the pandemic. When you did the recap I thought, exactly how I would do it after a lecture, recap some of the key points towards the end. Cheers! With regard to air quality this of course is generally the case...but...just like clouds can be at different levels the same can be said of air quality. Consider the fantastic sunsets we can sometimes get when volcanic ash is in the upper part of the troposphere but the air is much clearer in the lower part of the troposphere. Says the environmental studies lecturer. I use the clear outside app since it provides forecasts in tabular form which I prefer.

Great video. I didn't realize how much I knew from just considering these factors. I did not realize lower humidity was a factor. Sometimes a sunset is all set up for a beauty and at the last minute the curtain closes. Heading to laguna Beach tonight. Looks promising

Thanks Kim, just downloaded one of the apps, I had worked out some stuff myself but didn't know about the humidity which makes sense because here we are very dry in summer and that is when we get good sunsets.

Thank you Kim for these explanations,. Are your explanations valid and applicable also for photographing sunrises?
@kimgrantphotography3 жыл бұрын
Very much so - just reversed and you don't have the luxury of watching the clouds in the hours leading up to a sunrise. There can be a few differences though which I may cover in a future video.

Thanks for the useful tips. I usually use instinct, living near the coast, but it is good to know that one can predict a good sunset to some extent. It is always good to see a new video from you!
@kimgrantphotography3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Janet. I feel similar to you. I can usually tell when it's going to happen. It can take years of looking at the sky and feeling the weather to learn this. I enjoyed learning more about the process making this video though. It helps put those intuitive knowings together with the science.

Great job Kim, much more detail than I have seen in similar videos, I was recently featured here in Canada on the Weather Network, I think this video would make awesome content on one of the UK weather channels, just a thought. Thanks for sharing.

Great tips thanks, does pressure have an effect also? Under high pressure it is usually sunnier and may produce better conditions for sunsets, including lower humidity.
@kimgrantphotography3 жыл бұрын
Yes - from what I've read the pressure makes up all the factors I've mentioned. With high pressure you get sunnier more settled weather and low pressure brings with rain and wind. I imagine somewhere between the changes in the pressure works best for sunsets. If it's been high for a few days, you've got little cloud to add interest and little breeze to clear the air but low pressure can have too much cloud. Changing weather usually brings the best light so if you see the pressure changing, that should be a good time to head out.

How do you take a good photo off a rainbow as I like taking photos off rainbow's but I can never get the hole rainbow in the shot mind I do use my phone I don't have a nice camera that you have lol.
@kimgrantphotography3 жыл бұрын
If you want the whole rainbow in shot, you really need a wide angle lens. I think some phone may have a wide angle mode but I am not sure. You can get great shots with just half a rainbow though :)

A really wet day can produce the best sunsets if the weather forecast predicts a sunny morning will follow the next day.
@thomastuorto99293 жыл бұрын
So what do you consider max wind to be out in for Sunrise/Sunset photography?
@hjones4513 жыл бұрын
A sunny day that doesn't end with a sunset, will normally produce the best sunrise the following morning.
