I'm a complete novice and remodeling my bathroom. Just started hanging the drywall on the ceiling by myself. Urghh hard as heck and had to cut my sheets in half just to handle it. But I messed up with gaps and with factor ends meeting cut ends. It is so hard! I cried half the day yesterday. But your videos give me hope that I can do this! And finish this project! I adore you! Thank you for all you do.

This guy speaks the truth…..I’m very good at this and he is 200% spot on. If you have no direction in life or making shit money…….spend bout $100 on knives from home depot and start your mudding career or use some of the deposit money on tools if you are broke broke or get them from the kilted guys link. Either ways folks with $100 worth of tools and the guidance from this dude you would be on the fast track to making $. Pay attention to what you are doing and have some pride and the balls to believe in yourself and learn where and when you can along the way.

This guy works in bare feet! That's so badass! Great video, thank you. I was confused about when to pre-fill and when not to, and this video explained perfectly. Gaps larger than an eighth inch, cut edges (not factory edges) abutting need pre-fill, damaged corners, etc. Don't ever leave loose paper. Got it. Use number 45 drywall mud compound, aka 'hot mud'. Cheers!

Re-using the wash water makes 90 minute mud into 30 minute mud. Comes in handy when topcoating the same day since all of your joints will be equal hardness. If you set the tape in hot mud and topcoat with topping as soon as it hardens it can save a day.

Great video and informative. I’ve drywalled over 40 years and always appreciated a good taper or plasterer behind us. There was one spot where a screw was close to the broken edge . I would add another about 2 inches back just to be safe . But great videos . I enjoy watching quality workmanship!

Loves your videos. I work on high end kitchen and bathroom renovations in Florida typically alone and have used a lot of your experience on drywall repair with my own experience and it has really improved my A game. Looking at this video reminds me of why I hate others hanging my board, this one isn’t to bad but my biggest thing I tell hangers is never gap my inside corners or make recessed to but joints if possible.
@jwil4905
@jwil4905 2 жыл бұрын
Recessed to butt joints aren't that big of a deal and not that hard to finish. They're also unavoidable if you don't want to waste a lot of board.
@DavidSmith-tw7bw
@DavidSmith-tw7bw 2 жыл бұрын
J Will: I typically hang from top down so that the cut is behind baseboards eliminating any possibility of that happening. I would agree that if you are patching in an area large or small then yes it could occur. Also when mudding recessed to recessed you can almost always do final finish in 2 coats vs 3 but that also depends on quality of finish performed. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa.
@jwil4905
@jwil4905 2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidSmith-tw7bw A top-down hang is key on larger areas, for sure. And of course taper to taper is much easier to finish, but a 2 coat finish is tough if it's going to be visible.

This was JUST the video I needed! I'm repairing the walls of a 1970's house, and every joint is HORRIBLE lol. I just dug out all the mud and layers of tape from a cracked butt joint, and found one layer of tape, one layer of MESH tape, and another layer of tape over a huge gap! It looks like the prefilled it, as I had to scrape it all out, but the gap is about a half an inch, AND one side is more recessed than the other. Nasty work all around lol. I'm hoping I can get it prefilled right this time so it doesn't end up just cracking on me again in the future!

Im retired and have all the time in the world and I fixed a bunch of holes in my home and matched textures. I scared myself on how well I did. I wouldnt even want to do this for a living. Most anyone can do this type of work. I watched videos on utube and learned. I made a few mistakes at first on how much water to mix in the mud at what point in the process you are at. Its not hard and learn from your mistakes. God Bless and take care.

used to do a lot of prefilling, especially in garages where the ceilings were around 9-10 feet, there was usually a 1-2 ft rip in the middle of the wall, where paper joint met cut joint, much easier to tape and finish those when they are prefilled Used a LOT of durabond (hot mud) we taped with a bazooka, but I preferred to run bed coats and top coats on joints by hand. We always used durabond for bed coat and Plus 3 for top coat. I could mix 2 buckets of durabond, run both buckets, and have my tools clean and both buckets cleaned out ready to mix next batch before the first bucket's mud started to set

As I work thru improvements, there are lots of imperfections I find - lifting drywall paper, poor patching, hole to patch. I want to redo my baseboards and trim, so while I’m doing that, what is the sensible thing to do about the drywall? A) deal with one problem at a time with patching B) tear out and redo C) just sell the house and move to a rental D) something else Appreciate your advice! Jaime (she)

Durabond is not for the novice. It is a special purpose mud for filling large areas. It is more of a cement...IT DOES NOT SAND. I use it for large or deep holes...sometimes with fiberglass tape then finish coat with easysand.

Drywalled a few times, but no pro, that’s for sure. Great information. Always have trouble with uneven edges. Especially living in an old home; nothing is close to square.

Vee butt joints with a sharp utility knife. Keep a small sharpening stone or medium grit diamond stone on hand to keep the utility knife sharp. Utility blades dull pretty quick. He is so right that getting a solid base is important for the tape. Prefill gives you that solid base.

Alot of us run hot mud 90min for taping roctape and paper internals with a banjo no pre fill needed if you run excess mud use your wipe down left overs to fill broken corners you come across and big gaps makes strong joins and super fast especially if alot of prefill is needed, the great thing about plastering is there's a tone of products tools and techniques to get the job done how you like, we also use shoes 😉

Shoes don’t help you do a better job though, lol. And if you had Peripheral Neuropathy and nerve pain in your feet like I do, you wouldn’t want to wear shoes either. Thanks for the comment

Thank you for all the help. You hit every question I had about what I need to do in order to fix the problems with my armature drywall hanging job! I am going to share this with my husband, and I know he will get a kick out of the kilt, lol. And I loved the picture you shared in the beginning of the video. That was sweet.

I used an icing piping bag to fill the cracks on the inside edge. Put the mud in a bag piped it in and then ran a knife over to flatten.

I am doing cosmetic repairs on plaster and I bought a cheap mixer at GoodWill and a mixing bowl. Prior to doing this I was not mixing to the consistency I wanted but somehow this worked perfectly. I paid $5 or less for the mixer. I also started using a big plastic spoon to move the mud around. Sounds silly but they are all designed to work together and inexpensive for a non pro. I do have a hawk and trowel also.
