With an older mask like you mentionned where the foam is glued to the mask... what would you use to remove the glue ? Thanks ! Trying to give a second life to an old mask :)
@jboairbrush5 жыл бұрын
@@Kreug11 well heat definitely helps soften up any adhesive, So would definitely give that a go. Any left over glue residue you could get off with Final Wipe or some other variety of wax and grease remover. Are you needing to salvage them? or will you replace the foams?
@TooSlowTube4 жыл бұрын
@@Kreug11 IPA (Isopropanol or Isopropyl Alcohol sometimes works to remove residues of glue or paint - it depends on the glue. It doesn't necessarily need to be the 99% pure stuff either - the sort with a bit of water in it, or adding some to the purer stuff (say, 70% IPA), sometimes works better. I've used it a lot for model making, in the past. I use the pure stuff to clean my brass instruments, (trumpets, etc) or instead of hand gel :) A little spray bottle works well for that. There are some materials, especially plastics, which can be softened ("melted") by IPA though, so always test a small area first. Cleaning the top of my LCD monitor with it didn't go all that well :) Petrol or even kerosene, can work too, but it's more likely to damage the other materials. Citrus based cleaners, like orange oil - pure or diluted a little, can be surprisingly effective, and are much safer to work with. Diluted IPA, say 50:50 with water, works well as a "positioning fluid" for self adhesive decals and transfers - provided they're water proof and the colours are reasonably solvent proof, like vinyl ones. Decals are generally not a good idea for helmets though - they can weaken motorbike helmets, apparently - the glue sometimes eats into the surface. #masks4all or #nomasksatall

Very thorough video. About the stickers: As soon as the surface is altered the CSA certificate is void. To maintain it you would have to send a painted mask to CSA and have them do destructive testing on it. You would then have to guarantee the same paint, process, etc. every time to keep certification. The other way is to get written consent by the helmet manufacturer of what paint to use. But they won't because they have their own paint departments. I chased a few for months. Only brand that gave me a pass was Calcoat out of Quebec (not even sure they're still around or not). All they said was "Use a paint designed for marine or automotive fibreglass and gel-coats". Pretty vague. I would just tape the sticker over, paint the bucket, uncover the sticker. To the ref he couldn't tell if it was aftermarket paint or not: he'd just look for the sticker. As for the customer, I had them sign a waiver acknowledging that the CSA certification was now null and void. Great video. I am definitely going to look for your painting tutorial to compare to what I do. Always room to learn or share!
@jboairbrush4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, yeah I imagine you point the mask you void the certification, but I'm pretty sure the refs are just gunna want to see that the sticker is there and then they will let them play, which I imagine is all the person with the mask wants as well. So masking it off would def work, I don't want the mask lines so I just take it off and put it back on, but yeah it's all a little hairy and vague on whats actually ok haha.

Hey sorry for the delay, this comment musta slipped past me! So for pressure I use a bit but nothing crazy, I would say just experiment, obviously more pressure you will go a little faster, but I generally don't press TOO hard and let the sandpaper do its job. If they are stickers over top of the gel coat / clear coat I just take them off using a heat gun to help. @@magnuskoski2596 if you let it dry then yes you'll have to sand or at least scuff it. but I paint whats called 'wet on wet', this is when you put the primer on let it tack dry so leaving it only 15 - 45 mins depending on the clear and then base coat right onto it. this creates a chemical bond which is actually better than an etch bond in my opinion.

@@magnuskoski2596 So did you prime and base the mask first? Helmets in Canada do not expire. There is an expiry date but it is not recognized. In the U.S. however it is, you will not be allowed to play with an expired helmet IF they check. If they go check and the sticker is gone or expired, you can't play.
@ryano.87689 ай бұрын
The US is much like Canada where it is not enforced at all. When I went through the reffing course only the most senior refs even knew about the goalie helmet sticker rule and none said they enforce it. I know a few goalies with sticker less helmets they got painted and they’ve never been checked.
@davidmcmillan43814 жыл бұрын
The current CSA and HECC certifications are invalid if Vinyl or paint is applied to Poly-carbonate masks. If a mask is made of Fiber Glass or Carbon Fiber you can customize it without losing the certification. No one seems to enforce that however, but if you get injured, there might be an issue.
