Why do you need to be 30 years younger? Austin will tell you any normal person can get on a bike and do this if they so desire ("I don't have enough money", "I'm too old", "it's too dangerous" being typical stoppers....)

I rode a cb100 alone through the mountain ranges of eastern Australia where there is no one much. God knows how old it was. No preparation. It went everywhere and was more fun than bikes I have ridden that cost literally 100 times more. Riding along dirt roads with no challenge to the bike, looking at scenery stretching 50 kilometers with nothing around except superb mountains. I even took it one one rally where it outshone the silly pristine BMW riders on the dirt. Standing up on the pegs you could ride it as hard as you liked, fall off and just get up and keep going. People are paranoid now about using a motorcycle. This guy knows more about touring than the other two and 500 more like them put together.

Must be lovely to have rich folks to send you packing off round the world on a motorcycle in your teens. I remember in my late teens having to save hard for almost four years to even buy my first secondhand motorcycle and that was as an apprentice at Rolls Royce, one of the higher paid apprenticeships in my area at that time. Please don’t try to tell me he ain’t got a gold spoon in his arse, I couldn’t afford to go bloody Blackpool for a weekend at 17yrs old, let alone tour South America on a motorbike for months! Good luck to little Lord Fauntleroy tho, I’m sure he’ll have lots of stories to tell the family about his time with the ordinary people.

I’m sure it would be but that’s not the case with Ben who worked 2 jobs for something like 14 hours a day for two years to save up enough to embark on the trip. Ben is the real deal, more power to his elbow I say - an inspirational type with an infectious personality. Best of luck to him....

I think it would be extremely difficult to ride a motorcycle without fingers, let me know how you get on. One advantage they wouldn't get cold in winter.

Exactly - I'd argue the 250 is the ideal bike to do a RTW trip on.....I think Charley and Ewan have set an expectation that you have to go large for this stuff, I have a CRF and a GS...I know which I'd rather lug across a swamp/river/desert/ice field (you get the idea)....

I'll second the CCM GP450. Perfect true adventure machine. And it comes from Bolton (except the engine is BMW, from their Husqvarna days).

Nick Rijke I would disagree. A rare, essentially custom shop motorcycle just seems like a bad idea for around the world. Super cool concept (Cough cough Honda CRF450 rally! Please!) just not enough parts support out there. I also wouldn't want to hassle with a discontinued engine. I believe the whole bike has been discontinued now. Personally I would choose something with a steel frame too. Not if but, when you have a frame crack or damaged it's going to be much easier to find someone to weld steel than aluminum.

TheMissendenFlyer unfortunately I knew someone who didn't SURVIVE. The disc broke, hit a rib and punctured his heart, he was dead before he hit the floor .He left a wife and two very young children.These are very dangerous machines if used incorrectly.
