Thank you for getting accurate and reliable information accross clearly and quickly. So many content creators take "for ever" to say what they can say in seconds.

You explain it all so well.. thank you too for the clear pictures showing what you are teaching. I just received a set of 10 Mitchell nibs with a round pen that seems to have a built-on reservoir holder on the end of the pen. ** Do you have a video showing how to use this? Thanks again! um... I am not sure if I know the nib you are talking about... the Mitchell nibs in this video are Mitchell Roundhand Square nibs and they have a removable reservoir attached to the underside of the nib.

@@VivianUang ok yes.. I have the same nibs (a set of 10), and the reservoir is built onto the end of the round handle pen. It’s like a longish scoop. I’ve explored it a bit and so I think I’ve answered it. It all end up in position when the nib is inserted into the pen. Surprised you’ve never seen one like that; but then maybe Mitchell made a kindergartner version, being the set I have 🤓👍

Using a lighter to prep a new fountain pen nib is highly inadvisable for several reasons. The intense heat from the lighter can warp or damage the nib, which is typically made from delicate metals like gold or stainless steel. These metals can lose their shape or structural integrity when exposed to high temperatures. Additionally, applying heat can disrupt the nib's ink channels and feed system, potentially leading to inconsistent ink flow or skipping. For best results, follow the manufacturer’s recommended procedures.

I was told by several teachers you should NEVER burn any nib. It damages the nib.
@VivianUang
@VivianUang 3 жыл бұрын
I heard both, but after some research, I found out that you would have to burn the nib for a looong time to damage it. If it's only a couple of seconds like my teacher suggested it doesn't harm the nib. But it's your nib after all :)

Very helpful! I have a question if you don’t mind. I got a couple of braun nibs per your suggestion. But the ink doesn’t seem to flow smoothly. I’ve tried good watercolor paper but they’re tearing up the paper and not putting down an even line. Any advice is greatly appreciated ❤️

Hi Briana, sorry for my English, I have the same problem as you. I tried BRAUSE nibs and they don't flow smoothly at all and made a lot spots and leaking on the paper when the ink dry. I tried with smooth Rodhia paper, it helps a little bit but over all you don't get better result. I made hours of tests and practising but they simple don't work. From my point of view they are really not worth the price, at least in Europe they are very expensive. I will try with chinese nibs, at least they are cheaper. If you can get a better result please let us know. Thank you

One thing about broad-edge nibs is that their design is that of a quill. They only permit flow at a substantial angle to the paper, roughly 50-70 degrees from the horizontal of the writing surface. Traditionally, writing with square edged nibs were used on a slanted board at a 40-55 degree angle.

Do broad nibs require a reservoir? I wonder if that's the reason I can't get my cheap nibs to work (not of the brands you mentioned).
@VivianUang
@VivianUang 3 жыл бұрын
A reservoir helps to hold more ink on the nib, you should be able to write with or without a reservoir. In my experience, broad edge nibs are like leather shoes, they take some time to "break into it" :P

@@VivianUang I hope so. The glittery ink I have is working with the manga nibs but not the calligraphy nibs. I'd be receiving the India ink I ordered in 5 days so I'll find out then if the metal of these nibs are just too smooth. When the ink does stick to the nibs, when I try to make a stroke all the ink just get dumped at once.

what happens if I try to make a thick upstroke with a fountain/dip pen? I will break the nib or tear the paper or what?
@DuchesseJudith
@DuchesseJudith Жыл бұрын
Yes to both. Penstrokes can only go down, and sideways. You're welcome to *try* going upwards. At best, the ink won't flow.

Thumbs down sadly - why have the difficulty of competing with bubble gum music to hear valuable information? OK for a video for learning dance or a tuition for a musical instrument possibly. Dissapointing.
