When doing calligraphy your pens are only designed to go down and to the right. If you go up and to the left it will damage the pen. That’s also why you felt the scratching and why it felt like it was digging. Also you have to hold the pen at a certain angle so that the ink flows well.
@chrissymac82786 жыл бұрын
Jason Tay ok I was just stating what I know and what I was taught. Thanks for the correction. I know that if I don’t hold my pen to where it will touch the paper the entire time “the angle of the pen” I will get a digging sensation and a scratching feeling. :))

I have some tips for you because watching your video I watched you struggle with some things 1. Don’t press on the pen too hard, you want to make smooth lines/curves (also don’t stop when trying to finish your words, as it makes the lines look a bit uneven 2. When you were writing the NETFLIX logo, you had too much ink on the pen and it transferred off on the paper, not helping your letters look neater and looking glossy aswell 3. Also a result in too much ink was the droplets of the ink on the paper, *DONT USE TOO MUCH* 4. When starting, use lined paper or just make your own lines, it helps you to know how long the fancy curves need to be and where to stop (I just recommend it for beginners but you don’t have to use it if it doesn’t help) I hope this helps.. and great video!

I am finally learning how to draw after year of regretting not doing it in school. seeing how much progress could be made if you took the correct foundational steps and the sheer joy of learning process was such an inspiration! Yesterday I finally drew an apple that LOOKED LIKE AN APPLE! Anyway it was lovely to come back to this video! Thank you!

Always Remember.. 1. Up light 2. Down heavy.. Edit: i almost forgot. 3. Write using your whole arm instead of just moving your fingers, it'll give you more freedom and it'll help avoid pain in wrists and hand.. And a surprise trick.. 👇 Practice as much as you can!!! Just freaking fill the pages with those exercises, drills, strokes. I filled two whole note books and it helped, not only for calligraphy but my handwriting too..

In highschool I had a calligraphy set which walked through the basics of how to form letters and holding the pen. Then I stopped using regular ball point pens for about the rest of the year to switch to a cartridge based calligraphy fountain pen for all of my notes and assignment and stuff. That practice really helped.

Can I just say, this is amazing!? I'm going, to be honest, a long-time goal of mine is to learn and become good at calligraphy, and looking for videos on how to do it can be overwhelming so it was really wonderful to stumble across this. Not only was it enlightening and lighthearted but it was incredible to see the skill Jazza learned in this process and the letter at the end made my week! Not only is it in an old lit form with modern touches which I am now obsessed with in addition to old lit, but also the way you wrote it to the viewers is just gold!XD thank you so much for making my day, I have been going through some very thought times lately and this is exactly what I needed!

Thank you for the breath of fresh air during my quest to find a way to sign my name on my art pieces. And even tho your video didn't help me find my answer of how to make an unusual, unforgettable letter "J", you did give me a push to try lettering courses again and follow the damn steps. Haha. Not only am I losing hope on making "Joyce" look cool painted somewhere 50 yrs from now, I am also contending with being a left-hander who tries real hard not to smear ink everywhere, and, i am still not in control of moving my whole arm while writing/drawing, rather I'm still trapped within the limitations of the wrist movement. I guess I should be glad that lettering and drawing is not my sellable art field. Just my passion. Thanks again.

I took an art class for 6 years and we learned a LOT of calligraphy because my art teacher loved adding words and quotes into pieces. Calligraphy was fun until you got that one calligraphy pen that some six year old used before you and the nib is stuck super wide open because the kid pressed down so hard on it or they didn’t clean off the remaining ink so it’s a clumpy, goopy mess. The struggles. 😩😂😂

This is wonderful for a first attempt-I can tell you're confident of your materials and you're already consistent in your strokes and forms-something that usually comes a lot later! One suggestion if you really did love doing this (and I believed you did, and I'm sincere), with dip pens you need to hold the pen up straighter not like a fountain or a regular pen. It will help with the flow of the ink, and the more of your arm/hand you use, the stronger and more confident the stroke. I really enjoyed watching this. Thanks for the content. I'd been cleared to teach on Udemy and Skillshare, but am not confident at all of videoing, so will take your courses on it. Thank you for the go ahead!

Hey, Jazza. Just stumbled across your video. Nice work in the short time you had to master the art. The primary difference between handwriting and calligraphy is the "ductus," or the manner in which letters are formed. While you might be used to writing an "o" with a quick squiggle of your fingers and wrist, a calligraphic "o" generally takes two strokes, starting anywhere from the 10-12 o'clock position and drawing the left and right strokes down to the base of the letter. This prevents the nib (especially the pointy crowquills) from stabbing into the paper like a hypodermic needle. And when working with crowquills, one does not use them as one uses a ballpoint pen (pressing to make 3 carbon copies). The tip of the nib should BARELY touch the paper's surface, allowing it to glide over the paper and not mimic the scalpel of a foot doctor trying to extract a plantar wart from someone's heel. Also: watch the arm movement in the opening video. That fluid motion comes from the shoulder, not the elbow or wrist, and as such results in those smooth, flowing loops and embellishments. All in all, I'd give you a B+ for your final "Happy Birthday." BTW, your first attempt at writing "Jazza" (4:06-4:35) is really very good. It has a certain uniformity and rhythm to it, both of which are critical for successful calligraphy. I'll be sending you the mailing list for my wedding so you can address ALL my envelopes!!!

HMFan2010 I didn’t read the whole comment but I think it’s nice
@HMFan20106 жыл бұрын
Hey, Jaychelle. I was a little worried people might think "who the heck is THIS guy?" so I'm glad you took the comment as it was intended. Just to clarify: I'm an artist myself and have been doing calligraphy since I was about 16 (40 or so years). The "B+" came from my experience as a graphic designer instructor and a day after posting my comment I thought to myself: "he isn't looking for a grade; he want to inspire others to try new things." I binge-watched I don't know HOW many Jazza vids the day I viewed the calligraphy episode and have to give him tons of credit for trying all kinds of new art forms, techniques, materials, and media. Not only is he a good (and fearless) artist, he's a good comedian (which I'm sure is NOT his intent), and in case he ever gets tired of creating art, he can always go into stand-up. Keep on creating, Jazza!
