I think this is about the first video I’ve come across with some footage that isn’t time-lapsed. 😄 Makes it easier to see what exactly is happening. Seems to take a steady hand. I suppose someone with a significant tremor(me) might have some difficulty not giving a fossil a few piercings, eh? I used to do fine-detail wood burning, but I can’t seem to do that well anymore.

Can’t thank you enough for posting this. This made it into my suggestions on KZbin and that’s how I learned about the Dremel 290. Somehow it was never mentioned in the 3 years I’ve been fossil hunting. Considering how expensive a good airscribe setup is, I can’t justify the purchase. Any recommendations for hard matrix? I have and will be collecting more black shale concretions. They’re a mix of pyrite, phosphate, and siderite. They’re extremely challenging just to split. Rotary diamond bits, while good for bulk matrix removal, leave scratches that make the last layer before the fossil impossible to judge.

Thank you for watching and your kind comment 🥰 The engraver is an amazing tool that can do just a good a job as air scribes. I used mine for years with the standard tips before the 290 craze hit off and Zoic PalaeoTech bought out some Tungsten tips. The tips are well worth buying, they turn the engraver into a completely different tool. The other thing you can do to reduce matrix is to score lines into the matrix with a Diamond Cutting Disc on your rotary tool. Then chip away the lines with your 290, or hammer and chisel/screwdriver. Check out this video where I use the rotary tool to help remove matrix. Anymore questions please ask 😀

Great work! What is your dremel of choice? I have a scribe, but I don’t always have access to it, and I’m considering getting a non rotary dremel, what one would you recommend?

Thank you 🙏 I bought and was using a Virtex Grout Removal tool for years before the Dremel craze hit off. I have 3 budget engravers and the Virtex is the best. ( I bought mine from eBay £12, 5 years ago) If I were setting up now I would go for the Dremel engraver as I know my friends Dremel Rotary is better than my cheep generic version. You will need to purchase the Tungsten Stylus from Zoic Palaeotech for best results 💪 I’ll be upgrading to an air scribe soon but the engraver will still have its usess for removing matrix. My friends TT pen was struggling on a fossil I was prepping, but when I got home and got the engraver on it, it absolutely minced through the hard matrix.

@@Elihoffs95 rotary is still handy for matrix removal and tidying up matrix. It’s also pretty handy for carving mouth boarders on Ammonites, have a look on my video How to Prep Fossils with Basic Tools, Ammonite Restoration,, ep 5 There is one drawback to engravers is the dust build up making it hard to see what you are doing

I’ve been wondering…what is the benefit of an air scribe over a good quality rotary tool? Because it seems like a lot of folks who are prepping fossils for museums and such use an air scribe.

@@valiantwarrior4517 there are 2 big benefits to Air Scribes, the first is that it blows the matrix dust away, second is they don’t over heat. But for price they are extremely good little tools

The matrix looks soft … would a Dremel have the same effect on say a Whitby stone fossil …
