You never mentioned what the grit was on the very first diamond Stone you used, at the minute 30 mark
@AussieWoodshed3 ай бұрын
Oh sorry, i always start with my 1200 grit diamond stone for this process to insure i don't remove too much material. If it takes too long to remove those factory machine marks i will go to my 800 grit to remove the marks then refine on the 1200 grit. Usually the 1200 grit is all i need. Hope this clarifies this for you.

Anyone know where I can get a new chip breaker for a number 5 jack plane
@AussieWoodshed7 ай бұрын
If your from Australia and you are looking for a traditional style chip breaker for a no 5, i can only suggest looking around on facebook, gumtree and maybe ebay for vintage ones as i don't believe they are made anymore. If you're happy to use a more modern chip breaker i have been happy with the Luban chip breakers. I got mine from timbecon, but its a little hidden on the website www.timbecon.com.au/4-smoothing-plane If you go to the link above, use the drop box under the title you can see the blade, chip breaker & lever cap also available, although this is under the no4 it is the same 50mm or 2in chip breaker for the no 5 also, as they use the same size. Hope this helps

The distance is 1/32 of a inch. Always had been.
@AussieWoodshed15 күн бұрын
@@richjones5432 Well you can put it that close if you want. For me it causes excess jamming of the shaving in the mouth of nearly every vintage hand plane i have and prevents adjustment in depth of cut. 1/32 or 1/64 as some suggest will only work for an extremely fine set smoother. I don't just follow what others say i settled on 2 - 3 mm with lots of trial and error and it works far better for me, and I've heard from plenty of my viewers who prefer 2-3mm after trying it. There is no right or wrong only what works, the chip breaker only needs to be close enough to curl the shaving nothing more. So i will stick with my 2 - 3 mm and you can use 1/32 or an inch.

Doesn’t that really depend on the thickness of the diamond stone?
@AussieWoodshed Жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct it does. The diamond plates i have used which are Atoma (~12mm thick) and DMT Dia Sharp (~10mm thick) both work with the way i showed in the video. I cant speak to other diamond stone brands as i haven't used them, however a diamond stone somewhere around 10-12mm thick should work fine. If the stone is thinner the angle on the back of the chip breaker will be less (flatter) and may still work but i cant confirm that as i have not tried thinner stones. If the diamond stone is thinner you maybe able to counter that a bit by resting the chip breaker on the bench instead of the blade. If the stone is thicker the angle will be more, however this could be countered by adding additional height under the blade used to rest the chip breaker. Hope this helps.
