The string used is a banana fibre. You can use a normal thread instead of you cannot find a banana fibre. The stem of the banana plant after the fruit is removed is slit into layers and dried to get banana fibre. Here most of the temples do not offer garlands made with artificial materials to God so we use Banana Fibres as it natural.
