Looking for a campsite with no neighbors and no hookups at little to no cost? Then boondocking might be the right choice for you. While this type of off-the-grid camping calls for a little extra preparation, it’s perfect for RVers who want to explore remote areas and save a little money in the meantime.
Here’s how you can prepare yourself, and your rig, for an epic boondocking adventure 🏕️
🗺️ Plan ahead. Choose your boondocking destination ahead of time, and research your site as much as possible. This way, you can ensure that your RV and/or tow vehicle are able to fit at your site and that both vehicles are capable of traversing the terrain to get there.
👍 Fill propane tanks. Before you head out, ensure that your propane tanks are full. Since there are no hookups at boondocking sites, you’ll be relying on your propane tanks to run things like your refrigerator, furnace, and other vital appliances.
🚰 Fill your fresh water tank and check the water pump. Find a spot to fill your fresh water tank near your camping destination, so you’re not traveling with the added weight of a full tank. Also, check your water pump before your trip to ensure it’s functioning properly. This pump will feed your fresh water to your faucets while boondocking.
💩 Empty black and gray tanks. Make sure you start your boondocking adventure with empty black and gray tanks as there will be no sewer hookups at your site.
🔋 Check your RV battery. Ensure that your battery is fully charged and running properly before arriving at your site. You should also not let your lead acid RV battery drop below 50 percent. If you’re planning a long boondocking trip, consider adding batteries to your rig or switching to lithium-ion RV batteries.
🔌 Charge devices. Make sure your cell phones, laptops, and tablets are charged before camping, and consider purchasing a portable battery to run and charge these devices. That way, you’re not using your RV’s power to keep them running.
🧊 Ice, water, and fire. Bring plenty of drinking water and ice for your trip, and a cooler that can keep these items cold for the length of time you’re boondocking. Also, always remember to bring your own firewood to sites that allow campfires.
👩🍳 Meal preparation. Make sure to wash any dishes or cookware before your trip so you’re not using extra water while camping. To make mealtime easier, consider prepping and freezing meals beforehand to help conserve water and power use during your stay. Using disposable plates and utensils can also help you conserve water while boondocking.
📱 Check cell phone coverage. Know what type of cell phone coverage (if any) you will have at your boondocking site before your trip, and always let somebody you trust know where you’re going in case of an emergency. You can use Campendium to check cell phone coverage reviews from others who have camped in the area.
🤝 Best boondocking practices. Cook outside to reduce heat inside your rig, always properly dispose of garbage, and don’t leave trash out where animals can reach it. And remember to respect others camping nearby by not parking too closely, keeping noise levels down, and turning off exterior lights at night.
