Great video. I have a tough time being patient with something I’m not sure is going to work or not so hearing someone else say just trust the process and if you do everything I’m telling you it will work out is really important to me. I’ve watched my neighbors till or cover their lawn with top soil and try to re plant grass with awful results. I’m being patient to learn what to do before I start but if I wasn’t watching these videos and hearing “be patient” over and over I’d have a hard time after doing all the work and spending all the money believing that it’s going to turn out well.

Hello Ryan, and nice to meet you. I've been watching a few of your videos and I think you're doing a great job. I'm not at all educated in lawn care but I want to be, and I also don't have all the tools that you use. I live in NC (I have sandy soil) and I'm a homeowner who's inspired to have a nice-looking lawn but I really don't know how to but I do the best with what I know or think I know. I try very hard but with little to no real results. I don't know anything about what kind or type of chemicals to buy or use on my lawn, don't know what I even need to help the lawn. All I do is try different things and hope for the best. I'm working on my backyard right now - I started a couple of months ago (again) by tilting the soil and throwing in fertilizer (10-10-10), seeding the lawn (laying pine straw on top of it) a few days later with tall sun/shade fescue grass, watering twice a day with very little rain (early morning and late evening w/temperatures in the 90's +) right now I have a small amount of grass but I should have more growth and I feel like giving up. Maybe I should purchase a step-by-step guidebook, and do some homework before trying again. I also installed an inground sprinkler system (3 zones) water supply from my well. Your videos do help me understand what steps are required to grow beautiful grass but I do not understand how to apply your lessons and techniques, to resolve my scenario. Do you have or recommend a step-by-step guide I can follow and what chemicals I would need to treat my lawn? Thank you and take care :) Randy Red Oak, NC

2:29 'Start renovation about 6-8 weeks before frost date.' Not only that, but also when shade hits your lawn cause of less daylight. By october my lawn is full in shade and it gets pretty wet, frost usually starts somewhere november/december. I have to start renovation in august to have the renovation succeed. In spring renovation starts later, usually in april in stead of march.

Love the video. Nice job. One critique, and I see this on all the grass tuner channels, just rent a sod cutter. Takes a couple hours, gets it down to dirt, take and remove material, and you’re done. If starting in the morning, you can remove the old yard, and seed the new yard in one day. Shit you can level the thing to if you’re feeling froggy lol.

My rule of thumb for the past couple years has worked well, I do my aerate and over-seed the first week of September. I do fescue in the back yard and PRG in the front. It’s been 4 years now and it’s starting to look pretty uniform but I see patches of junk I’m tempted to kill off 100% and overseed with PRG. But over the years I’ve been seeing reasons why I think my overall soil health isn’t as good as it should be. Seems to be sand heavy loam. Wondering how I can fix my soil. My grass goes dormant really fast in a couple spots.

Ryan, can you create a video going more in depth to how you’ve successfully grown grass in your campsite area? My parents have a lower yard that is very similar to that area, surrounded my trees and not much sunlight. Over the years moss has taken over and killed off the grass. What are your suggestions on overcoming this and maintaining a healthy lawn in an environment such as that so that we can avoid moss taking over again? My dad had an accident last year and hasn’t been able to do much so I’m trying to help do this for him so that he doesn’t have to worry about it.

Wow, this video wants me to do a complete lawn renovation, which, after the last time, I said I would never do it again, so I have been over-seeding. Unfortunately over-seeding results are less than desirable because the existing lawn has so many undesirable grasses, especially bentgrasss. My last renovation about 25 years ago. was so labor-intensive it turned me off to ever wanting to do that again...so I just lived with the lawn the way it was. My previous renovation involved using a sod-cutter to remove the previous lawn, hauling the sod away, bringing in topsoil, leveling, seeding...etc. All of which I did myself. The method that you show seems so easy (comparatively) that I might just do it. I only question if a lawn rake will cut the sod enough to give the seed the airy soil that it needs?
@bmac97062 жыл бұрын
I’d use something mechanical. A dethatcher for light stuff, or a power rake set low for tough stuff.

I am looking at your Perennial Ryegrass seed, and wondering how many pounds / 1000sqft. did you do in the sample picture? I am assuming I need 2 bags of 25lbs. for 4800sqft... But I want it to be super dense and thick and I saw where people that did sport fields were going with 15-20lbs / 1000sqft.
@ryanknorrlawncare2 жыл бұрын
I did around 7 pounds per 1000. Once it matures it gets really thick so I wouldn't want to go too much over that. Those rates you saw would be more for overseeding bermuda where you already have an established grass in place and you're trying to get rye to grow over top of it for the winter season in the south. It's a crazy concept but it works.
@Lej2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanknorrlawncare Awesome, I am in the Upstate of South Carolina near NC and have a full common Bermuda lawn currently at 1" that is doing really well (so far) .. It was all brown after a scalp about 1.5 months ago and it's thick and green now. I plan to scalp it down in early October and was debating over KBG vs PR to overseed.. I was worried the new KBGs would compete with the Bermuda a little more next summer.. and since KBG spreads with rhizomes like Bermuda, I wasn't sure if that would make both appear thin.. Your rye mix looks like it is a great color and can be kept low and would be better than a generic KBG seed!.. This is my first season of lawn care ever. I have watched hours and hours learning as much as I can.. I also saw that it's good to make sure my Bermuda isn't on its first year, which I confirmed with Google street view 😂
@ryanknorrlawncare2 жыл бұрын
@@Lej blue is too slow to get established so rye is the way to go for an overseed. It will need to be sprayed in the spring to remove it from the bermuda so it doesn't compete
@Lej2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanknorrlawncare is spraying necessary because my HOC would be low to begin with? I see guys keeping there's around 3-4" then shocking it down to half an inch to kill it off as our summers are brutal to the northern grasses, although it seems to be a crucial point to begin watering the Bermuda as well. So maybe spraying is the way if I'm going to try keeping mine low to start with.

Thanks for all you do, Ryan! I attempted a late spring renovation with your 80/20 BG/PRG and I've been fighting crab grass all summer (had a very old zoysia lawn). I'm in SW Indiana. I've given it multiple applications of Drive XLR8 with MSO (thank God for the Sprayers Plus backpack sprayer), but it just keeps spreading. We had some freak heavy rains followed by a couple heat waves, so only about half of the lawn has stayed. I'm having an irrigation system installed (probably in November) but they'll have to install a second meter (likely in October), so I'd like to restart the renovation again in the fall, but don't want to have to kill everything off again if half made it through the summer. Any suggestions on targeting crab grass prior to another renovation without having to kill it all off with Glysophate? Thanks again!

I normally would kill or pull out all the gloriously healthy crabgrass and replant seeds. We’re still 3 months from first frost. Should I actually just leave them in and overseed my weed lawn with your seeds so that my seeds don’t get washed away? when the new grass is a little older and the crabgrass and clovers and wild violets starts to go dormant, just rake them out? Then use pre emergent in early spring. I’m worried that if I kill it all now and put out seeds they all will sprout up together and the crabgrass with choke the new grass seeds. I can’t spray with a pre emergent can I?

Man I hope you see this...when you sand level can you overseed as well...and if so, sand first, then seed and cover with peat moss?

Does a cool season have a lower time/water commitment than a warm season?

Hi. I have some crab grass on my lawn. Would i be able to use Tenacity to kill the crab grass, and then manual aerate + overseed/fertilize myself? There are some heavy green patches of grass (looks very health) and then brown spots.

Great video Ryan. We are getting a new paver patio and walkway coming from the driveway to our screened in porch. The contractors say there is going to be lawn damage. There is a roughly 3,000 square foot area behind d where the paver patio is going with a variety of different grasses. I would love to make it actually tall fescue back yard. Should I kill all the existing grass back there or just spot kill the areas with the grass types I want to get rid of. Or is there a better way to do it? Thanks. I am in Northeast PA.
