Respectfully, Counsel, here is my question: why are you hyping up On Campus Interviews on Law School campuses when, in fact, those interviews are entirely unavailable for 9/10 students at most law schools? OCI at most schools is limited to the top ten percent of the class only (top 5 percent for Cravath and other top law firms). (See infra). You see, in the adult world--not the world of gullible law school applicants--IRL, telling a functioning adult, presumably with a job, to enroll in a 3 year educational program, costing easily 200K for tuition, books, and living expenses, on the hopes of getting a job that 90 percent of the students won't even get an interview for--a functioning adult would walk away laughing from such a foolish idea. Surely you would not advise a client to invest over 200K/3Y on an opportunity that had only a 10 percent chance of a big payoff. . .would you, Counsel?

Just heading into interviews next month. This was really useful, thanks. One question I had. One of my experiences before law school was a photojournalism internship in Nepal. I had through of bringing in a few of my favorite photos I took from the internship, but no idea if this would be responded to well. Any thoughts?

Hey Vanessa!! I'm so glad the video was helpful! With respect to the photos, that's definitely an amazing experience that I would totally talk about if it comes up in the interview, but I would recommend not bringing the actual photos. If your goal is to work for a law firm then you don't want to give the impression that you would (secretly and actually) prefer a career in photojournalism -- and my sense is that bringing in the photos would give that impression. Best of luck in your interviews! Let me know how they go!!

Hello, I just got rejected from Baker & Mckenzie summer intership program, I last till the last fase (an interview in the building), any opinion about why this happenend ?

Hi, Fire Very Crazy! Without having been there I unfortunately won't be able to give you any specifics, but I will say that I got a TON of rejections from law firm summer clerkships, as did many talented and hard-working attorneys that I know. The best thing to do when you get a rejection is to chalk it up to circumstances outside your control and keep applying to other places. There a lot of great law firms out there and I'm sure you'll find the right fit for you. If this happens to be a summer internship after your 1L year, I'm also a huge fan of using that first summer to work somewhere other than a law firm (non-profit, gov't agency, corporation) only because for many law students focused on getting a law firm job this may be the last chance (for a while) where you get to see a legal experience outside of private practice. I hope this helps!

According to the ABA for Law Students, “About 90 percent of the nation’s law graduates do not get hired through OCI. OCI is just one avenue to legal employment and, depending on your academic credentials, career goals and practice interests, it may not be the appropriate avenue for you.” Please understand that OCI will not lead to a job offer for approximately 9/10 law students and BE REALISTIC if you are considering law school. Getting a job offer through OCI is quite unlikely to actually happen for you, or for most people you know. . .

That's definitely true! According to the latest NALP stats, about 20% of law school graduates go into biglaw as their first job out of law school.

@@AngelaVorpahl I doubt that the percentage is that high. Again, at most law schools, only the top 10 percent of the class will even have a chance at a summer job in BigLaw. Less than 10 percent will actually get a job there post-graduation. Yes, at Harvard/Yale/Stanford the numbers are far better, and at the bottom schools virtually no one will get such a job. . . I personally do not believe, for one minute, that 20 percent of all law school grads go into BigLaw. Even if they did, the average tenure of a first-year associate at a large law firm is 4Y. So, even if you do everything right--make top ten percent of your class, make Law Review, get a high-paying job at a large law firm, your "career" in big law may be over in 24-36 months. 4Y of college, 3Y of Law School, a rigorous two day Bar Exam for a job that may well end in 2-3 years--after you've spent 7Y of your life and over $400,000 on your tuition, books, and living expenses for 7Y. . .that's a truly awful ROI.

Oh, and top ten percent is not always enough. Cravath and other highly grade-sensitive firms want students in the top five percent of the class. Law schools tell applicants all about these amazing jobs--but they NEVER tell the applicants, oh, BTW, 95 percent of you won't even be considered for the position. That would be honest, and ethical, and could cost the law schools money in those sweet tuition loan dollars. Law school admission committees are so dishonest and sleazy they would make Saul, of Better Call Saul, blush. . .
