Hi Angela! Thank you for the valuable content! How much time on average do you think one should spend in doing the case brief? Do you need to read the whole case to do the case brief? Thanks so much in advance!
@AngelaVorpahl19 күн бұрын
Good question! I probably need to do an updated version of this video. 😆As I've seen law school strategy evolve over the years, I'm actually a HUGE fan of (1) getting a case brief from chatGPT (as a baseline foundation); (2) watch and takes notes on the Quimbee case brief video (to actually understand the case); and (3) skim/read the case (depending on whether your professor is a random/aggressive cold-caller). In an ideal world, steps (1) and (2) would take no more than 30 minutes. When it comes to step (3) that could take up to 15 minutes per page of the case (if you're investing the time to read and takes notes on every line of the case) or ideally no longer than an additional 15-30 minutes total (if you've transitioned to skimming the case and relying on taking incredibly detailed class notes on your professor's lecture). Let me know how that lands!
@KayneChan-Li19 күн бұрын
@@AngelaVorpahl @AngelaVorpahl Thank you very much for this elaborate answer. I really appreciate it. I'm a Canadian law student actually so I don't think Quimbee is of much help unfortunately :( I am able to get a lot of case summaries off Lexis though which I find is helpful. So are you recommending I spend about 45-1h per case? That would be about 8 hours per class per week just reading the case. Do you think it's a good use of my time and would not be better off sparing some time for outlining?

@AngelaVorpahl21 күн бұрын
Great question! When I worked at the firm, the balance of work to life was very heavily weighted on work. A normal day of work would be 11 hours in the office (with probably about 4 hours of work on the weekend). A heavy day of work could be 12-14 hours in the office (with 6-8 hours of work on the weekend). But that intensity was what I was looking for in that phase of my life. It still gave me enough time to go to the gym or a volleyball match at night, and brunch/dinner/park on the weekends!

I have gotten midterms in my 1L courses. None of them were for a real grade: they were “formative” assignments. But they did help me see what I need to do on the finals. I did fine, but I also know my areas of improvement. TBH; the two hardest things are finishing exam essays on time and writing the memos for my legal writing class. Also, my multiple choice questions in criminal law have been really difficult. But I am doing well!!!

What constitutes the law is 100 percent up to the professor. My contracts professor’s framework of consideration is completely different from most supplements I read. If you “bar prep” your finals without learning, you will fail.
@AngelaVorpahl28 күн бұрын
Hi Luke, I totally hear you. And you're right, there are definitely differences in how professors select, present, and organize the material. That being said, I have seen it work wonders for people to first understand the straight-forward "brass tacks" of the rules of law, and then be able to more easily identify and comprehend the nuance and personalized structure that each professor adds to the material.

@marcelleceide287328 күн бұрын
How so, I would like to know?
@thejanguseffectacademiccon738628 күн бұрын
@marcelleceide2873 as I assume you already know that we have the US Supreme Court and as you can see the justices interpret the law differently which means professors can teach the area of law differently and what they think they want you to know but the bar only wants you to know the black letter which is the bare minimum. So basically all the stupid stuff that they teach in law school about analysis and legal research and writing is not applicable to practicing law outside of the real world which is why some people are book smart and not Street Smart when they get to practicing law, but also the bar doesn't want you to give that analysis. Instead, the bar wants you to get to the point.
@AngelaVorpahl28 күн бұрын
Hi, I completely hear you. The Bar exam is different in that it goes shallow and wide, rather than deep and narrow (like law school). That being said, I have seen it work wonders for people to first understand the straight-forward "brass tacks" of the rules of law, and then be able to more easily identify and comprehend the nuance and personalized structure that each professor adds to the material (rather than trying to do it the other way around).

Are these people REALLY that out-of-touch with reality? I was a kid when these commercials aired, and I, my family, and all of my friends understood RIGHT AWAY that the Harrier was a joke. The fact that he was *looking* for fine print, doing all this research & math, not seeing it in the catalog, having to *write it on the order form*... They KNEW that their whole plan was to try to hold the company to an absurdly literal interpretation of their commercial, and that the "offer" was not genuine. I don't like huge corporations either, but this whole thing is beyond absurd, and if any of these people genuinely believed that they were gonna get that jet, have I got a bridge to sell to them!! I'm dumbfounded that so many people are taking his side.

I just looked it up, and $700,000 is a little more than the cost to buy a small aircraft. A brand new Cessna 172 light airplane would cost you between $300,000 and $400,000. Maybe it's not as cool as a harrier jet, but it is still an aircraft.

Thank you for these videos, Angela! Any advice on answering the "Why do you want to pursue a legal career" question for a Law Cohort or Fellowship?
@AngelaVorpahlАй бұрын
Hi Jordan! I would take the same approach -- what's one notable experience (e.g. a course you took in college, a conversation you had with an attorney, an internship/job/volunteer experience) that was the tipping point for helping you decide that you might want to go to law school? From there, if you've taken any steps to deepen that hunch (e.g. taken additional courses, reached out to other attorneys, tried to confirm/negate the feeling by taking on other internships/jobs/volunteer experience), you should absolutely add that part of the narrative as well!
@EvilRailroadАй бұрын
I disagree on billing for doing things that just get you up to speed on a case. Those aren’t instances where you’re actually doing work for a client. Having said that, there are certainly ways to turn that into billable time. For instance, I’ve billed prep time for depositions, mediations, or hearings where I reviewed docs to get caught up.

@AngelaVorpahlАй бұрын
If you're a law student and the case brief is not for a grade and/or your professor hasn't explicitly prohibited the use of AI, I'd say heck yes! It can absolutely help you understand the content and main takeaways of a case before you read it.
@adamsimon8220Ай бұрын
In addition, one thing that is helpful for billable entries when starting is to see a good swath of examples of others’. Usually at an orientation, they give you one or two. But that is not enough. So ask the partner supervising one of your matters to let you see last months entries for the matter you’re working on (hopefully with a sizable team so you can discern patterns that are not just idiosyncrasies). These help you in general, but also help you for particular clients. Beyond clients wanting billing down in a certain way (e.g., block billing), you learn how to frame your entries for billable work in a way that is more likely not to raise the client’s eyebrow when they receive the bill or an interim accrual. Good (or even bad) partners are happy to do so because it saves them time editing them over the end of the month. It’s one definite skill juniors can get better at quickly before getting hit with a ton of tasks.

Even if you won a car you can't claim it without a driver's license and a fighter jet is a total different ballgame.., So he wasn't a trained fighter pilot so he couldn't fly it... Even if he knew how to fly it it still would have been illegal to fly it because it's a fighter jet. He couldn't sell it by any legal means so he would have been stuck with it... It was all about greed because the jet was worth 32 millions and his greed ultimately got the better of him...
