Very useful video Jordan. I'm planning to start my own business next year so this is very helpful. A quick little story I thought you might like. Back in 2017, I did an installation for an extension for a builder I often work for and as I'm not registered or at the moment I don't have my 2391 so a NIC approved company, which shall remain unnamed, came in to test and certify my work which obviously I was present for. The guy actually said to me after the tests "Would you mind if I use this installation for my NIC/EIC inspection" A bit cheeky I thought but I didn't mind too much as I've seen his work before and it's a bit rough! I like you take pride in my work and ensure it's done to the highest standard!

Had my first Assessment and failed. I had a bad day and just froze when asked to carry out some testing, my mind went blank and just felt stupid. Got to pay another huge amount of cash to get a revisit. Gutted, the questions were stuff I know but couldn't spit out. Im going to re book but get plenty of prep done for the next time.

I'm a new starter and completed the Combined Inspection & Testing qualification last summer, when he asked me about expected R2 end to end I forgot the x 1.67 stuff. From that point it went down hill very quickly. Felt awful an inadequate. I couldn't sleep the night before and was knackered lol, so I know where you come from about anxiety. Trouble is, now I have failed this time I'm gonna be more nervous next time, catch 22. All my office was fine along with paperwork so no worries there. I got a Ze reading of 0.12 on my results for a TNC-S, but I did point out that the Sub-Station is less than 100m away, was that a good answer? Love the posts and will carry on trying.

Interesting to know what you guys have to go through. As an electric and gas meter installer, we have days of being watched like a hawk doing installations at a depot every year, plus on location audits where again we are closely observed from start to finish. On the gas side we also have assessments every three years or so which involve a few days of practical and written assessments in a testing centre. It's certainly a downside to working in the industry, because the pressure can be intense. Anyway, I enjoyed the video.

Good video Jordan Very Informative and shows a detailed knowledge of your chosen profession. For those of us living outside the U.K. could you elaborate on the abbreviations you us (e.g . the Bodies having Juristiction etc. ) The Inspection side of things seems quite thorough. Yet I don't know if your Apprenticeship program is a common curriculum throughout the country with a certain standard of knowledge gained and on the job experience aquired over a 4 or 5 years period in all aspects of the trade. Good luck with your inspection. I know you will ace it. your online series are a testiment to what compitent work looks like and as such the value of what the customer is paying for.

Hello Jordan. I am looking at starting up as a domestic installer and I will need to go through the building control route until I can get NECIEC approved status. The building control for one area have said they will not accept testing from someone who is not already registered with a CPS accreditation scheme. Is this normal or have I missed some legislation somewhere making new builds different?

You must remember that it's not in their interest to fail anyone after all your paying for it but they can give advice. Obviously, if you are a complete cowboy they may fail you but I would imagine it's rare. I used to freak out before my BSI assessments which were three days twice a year but then I figured out we were paying them about 2 grand for each assessment and so they were really there to help you not fail you.

Hi mate, this video was a great insight. Can I just mention a couple of things that irked (not against you, but the system) 1) The need for copies of documents. Keeping a local copy of a document means it could be obsolete and you would be unaware. By using documents direct from a controlled website would ensure you have the most current version. 2) Risk assessments- You mention that you can download these from the web, so they are generic (common sense back in the day) 3) Assessments- You can cherry pick your own jobs for assessment? Wow. Seeing as all jobs are recorded, the assessor should be able to pick any job at random, increasing the chance of discovering shoddy workmanship (not aimed at you) I could go on, but I won’t bore you 😁

Meter calibration is a big con really. When I worked for a contractor they sent a MFT in for calibration with one function not working. It came back and yes you can guess they’d failed to pick it up. Can’t remember which range it was but it wasn’t intermittent just completely dead. Is a phase rotation test needed at every 3 phase point now? I only do distribution boards and socket outlets. An oven seems a bit pointless? Excellent videos thanks.
