Great video, Holly. if I may add some advice? the only prep I tell my students to do in the summer prior to going to university is to acquire life skills. Enrol in a cookery course, learn how to budget your money, how to do laundry, how to manage your time, get into a fitness routine that you can continue during your semester/term. You already know (sort of) how to do the academic stuff, it's time to learn the life practical stuff.

The thing about believing you are the only one who doesn't understand something, is that you NEVER EVER are, but none of your fellow classmates has balls big enough to ask themselves, so they make you feel stupid. Learning is great, and we should all ask questions. I mean, if I already knew everything the prof is talking about, I wouldn't even bother to assist lectures or lab. (💕)

This does reassure abit and I feel like I can relate to how you felt in first year. During GCSEs and A Levels I often felt like I took a long time to process and understand things, especially when it was new information, and for some reason I felt this slight pressure to understand the content at a fast pace which would make me feel as if I'm rushing and leaving gaps in my understanding. Although I did manage to understand certain concepts later on when I sat down by myself and read over it a few times and arranged time with my teachers to go over it I feel like my main concern in terms of academics in Uni is time keeping and not falling behind on content. I really do hope I can improve on that skill.

I'm starting biology course this september and I'm super worried. I am worried about labs, because I never got experience that I needed, like other studemts did. Everything I learned about biology and chemistry,I learned it myself because my school teachers were super underqualified and the school budget was so low we couldnt afford lab experiments. I know other kids from better and more privilledged upbringing are going to be way better and ahead of me and I really worry about that. Biology is my true passion and it was the only thing I would look forward to,and knowing that I will not even be good at it breaks my heart, because I've worked so hard but yet I'm still behind

For anyone reading I just was to emphasise that all unis do lectures and handouts etc differently! I’m at a Russell group (not Oxbridge) doing a bio degree. All my lectures are recorded and put online to rewatch and we don’t get handouts- we have to print the lecture slides ourselves if we want them. It really depends on your uni policy/subject school so you’ll just have to see when you get there! Also some people may find typing notes during lectures/ annotating the slides helpful as it reduces writing time and helps you keep up with the lecturer. Lastly, in my uni for example, we don’t have weekly work, we have ‘coursework’ which all counts towards the module grade, perhaps one or two pieces per module so we don’t tend to have coursework due every week. Every uni is different but you’ll get used to how yours does things! Great video spreading more awareness of what uni is really like for many people- I really enjoy your channel :)

This video is so relatable, I’m at the last year of school (Spain) and my high school is so hard, one of the hardest, and sometimes I felt the same!, but then I realised that not everyone gets everything they seem to get, maybe they’re just as lost as you, and I found that asking as many questions as you find okey to teachers is the key, and learned not to give much thought to what might people be thinking about me. Love you Holly! Please do more yoga routines, I’ve been watching non-stop the ones you uploaded🇬🇧😘

Your lecturers will talk too you but there is also a chance they will talk at you. There is also a chance they will spend the whole semester reading directly from the powerpoint and you begin to question whether or not you even need to be there.

We go to school to learn a profession so we can work for money. That it’s just as important to learn how to have money work for you. Schools teach NOTHING about how to manage this money in most high schools and colleges. We graduate from school, go out into the world, and get a financial master’s degree in D.U.M.B. We have sold our young people so hard and so long on college that we have begun to accept some myths about college degrees. College degrees do not ensure jobs. College degrees certainly don’t ensure success. College degrees do not ensure wealth. College degrees only prove that someone has successfully passed a series of tests. We all know college-educated people who are broke and unemployed. They are very disillusioned because they thought they had bought a ticket and yet were denied a seat on the train to success. If you are sending your kids to college because you want them to be guaranteed a job, success, or wealth, you will be dramatically let down. In some cases, the letdown won’t take long because as soon as they graduate they will move back in with you be careful what you learn, because your mind is so powerful that you become what you put in your head. For example, if you study cooking, you then tend to cook. If you don’t want to be a cook anymore, then you need to study something else. When it comes to money, the masses generally have one basic formula they learned in school and it’s this: Work for money. The predominant formula I see in the world is that every day millions of people get up, go to work, earn money, pay bills, balance checkbooks, buy some mutual funds, and go back to work. That is the basic formula, or recipe. It seemed to me that the socialists ultimately penalized themselves due to their lack of financial education. No matter what the “take-from-the-rich” crowd came up with, the rich always found a way to outsmart them. That is how taxes were eventually levied on the middle class. The rich outsmarted the intellectuals solely because they understood the power of money, a subject not taught in schools. When we were told to follow set procedures and not deviate from the rules, we could see how school discouraged creativity. Schools were designed to produce good employees, instead of employers. We often got the answer that money was not important, that if we excelled in our education, the money would follow. The more we know about the power of money, the more distant we grow from the teachers and our classmates. There is a lot to learn. Learning how to have money work for you is a lifetime study. Most people go to college for four years, and their education ends. I already know that my study of money will continue over my lifetime, simply because the more I find out, the more I find out I need to know. Most people never study the subject. They go to work, get their paycheck, balance their checkbooks, and that’s it. Then they wonder why they have money problems. They think that more money will solve the problem and don’t realize that it’s their lack of financial education that is the problem. You should learn to master the power of money, instead of being afraid of it. They don’t teach that in school and, if you don’t learn it, you become a slave to money. To be the master of money, you need to be smarter than it. Then money will do as it is told. It will obey you. Instead of being a slave to it, you will be the master of it. That is financial intelligence. Just know that it’s fear that keeps most people working at a job: the fear of not paying their bills, the fear of being fired, the fear of not having enough money, and the fear of starting over. That’s the price of studying to learn a profession or trade, and then working for money. Most people become a - and then get angry at their boss. All too often, the poor and middle class allow the power of money to control them. By simply getting up and working harder, failing to ask themselves if what they do makes sense, they shoot themselves in the foot as they leave for work every morning. By not fully understanding money, the vast majority of people allow its awesome power to control them. If they used the power of the self-knowledge, they would have asked themselves, “Does this make sense?” All too often, instead of trusting their inner wisdom, that genius inside, most people follow the crowd. They do things because everybody else does them. They conform, rather than question. Often, they mindlessly repeat what they have been told: “Diversify.” “Your home is an asset.” “Your home is your biggest investment.” “You get a tax break for going into greater debt.” “Get a safe job.” “Don’t make mistakes.” “Don’t take risks.”

This video was SO helpful. I sort of have a fear of failure and especially anxiety for coming across dumb. Going into uni, I felt so ignorant. Everyone seemed to know all the answers and I sat there thinking whether I’d made the right choice. The first week of lectures was absolutely horrid - but I’m starting to see more and more that people are struggling and find it hard, and I’m not alone. I suppose everyone just has to find their own way to make things work.

I’m starting university in September next year, and I hope to get into Salford University to study counselling and psychotherapy. I’m really excited about it even though I will probably be one of the oldest on my course because I did an apprenticeship at eighteen instead of going to university because of the state of my mental health. The points about making notes is really handy. I will try to continue doing what I have been doing at college for the past two years and write bullet points.

Your experience seems really similar to me going from elementary to high school felt stupid had impostor syndrome had no clue how to take notes as the same happened as with you the professor just keeps on talking the material also felt a lot harder we had the situation where as you said you need to understand what you're learning not just learn it and last year (1st year in hs) I just completely failed it was going OK until lock down and then the first grades from the material in school were great but then material after that was just really bad towards the end i really had to get my shit together because I was close to failing like 3 classes (out of 13) and luckily I did but since I was just so far behind schedule on so many things for the final 3 weeks of the school year i slept most days 4-5h if not less so it was not fun also how much time i have is a lot different as i have to get up at 5 get ready take the bus school starts at 7 and i usually get home at around 3-4pm so i just do stuff untill like midnight or later and then sleep now I've completely changed stuff thanks to you I've started scheduling have gotten much better at being organized and am getting 7-8h of sleep daily while spending all the time possible working on school and other projects

Unfortunately then I failed but when I retake the classes I felt more confident doing experiments :) I think it's really important to share experiences like this. You are not alone, guys :) You don't really know, maybe there are other people in class feeling insecure, people looking annoyed by your questiones can be stressed and have no clue what's going on just like you :D

What you said about labs - ok but I had a materials science headstart course at Cambridge earlier this summer and that's EXACTLY how I felt. They said 'don't worry if the lectures don't make sense, you'll get time to consolidate the info'... Man that was LIES Lectures were actually enjoyable, but then I became only more and more confused - it's hard enough to understand x-ray diffraction equations on paper, but when you actually have to use the machine, winging it even after being literally told what to do and everyone else seems to know, it makes you feel like you have 2 brain cells. Ugh still applying though I'll be damned if I give up this dream

I'm going to uni and a bit worried about the drinking/clubbing culture there. I don't do either... it's not my thing...though I like hanging out with friends and I'm quite sociable. I'd love to hear your thoughts and tips for this :) Thanks

I stayed 2 years at home repeating the exams to get to med school (1st year didn't get enough grades, and now this year, we will see!). I will know if I finally did it by September 10th and then start university! So thank you for the heads up! I'm a quite anxious person when it comes to school (it has been a struggle to follow my dream!) so, it is good to know what awaits me and that I'm not alone 😊 💕 Thank you Holly!

Omg it's 3 years later and you described exactely how I feel rn. I'm so overwhelmed and feel stupid, because I have te feeling everyone around me so much smarter than I am. This video helped me a lot, now I know I'm not the only one who feels that way and has no clue what's going on. :)

Hi Holly. Even though I have been a big fan of you for a quite while, this is my first time leaving a comment for you. I am starting university in Canada as an international student. You've just made me less pressured. I also have the same problem being in a group with someone that I don't know well. what you feel in the circumstance is exactly the same for me! Despite the language handicap that I have, I was inspired that I should attempt any challenges. Otherwise, there is no point paying such a high tuition and attending university. Thank you, Holly.

I’m super nervous because I’m moving from Italy to Wales to study at university and I’m scared I won’t understand lectures or that I will not be able to study like an English native speaker!

Hey Holly, I’m doing a biology degree as well starting in sept 2020. Would you be able to say something or make a video about biology at university specifically ? How the course works and your contact hours etc, what you found difficult about the course or university in general?
