100 years ago: Are you literate? Great! We'll take you! Today: I love your master's and 4.0, I'm really happy to see you have 5 CompTIA certs and 3 Cisco ones. How much did those cost? Over $4000? And thousands of hours of work? Interesting. Anyway, if you were to program a robot that had to navigate through a maze with no vision, how would you do it? Well darn, you couldn't figure that out? I'm sorry. I saw a 2 month $3000 technical bootcamp you could do. If you get through that, that would really help in future interviews. Come back once you're more prepared, and maybe you'll be lucky enough to get that unpaid summer internship.

just "solving" it is not enough. Some interviewers expect you to come up with the optimal solution on the spot.
@randomnobody6603 жыл бұрын
@@stanleya.8805 I guess depends on what you mean by "solution". Much of the time the optimal algorithm is the only way to "solve" a leetcode question due to time constraints (though there are a few that are...weird). If you mean optimal implementation, I don't think that can be reasonably expected.

There are studies that stand by the power of positive thinking, but what I practice along with it is negative visualization. After spending days or weeks before the interview picturing myself actually working at the company, I spend the day before the interview visualizing me failing and ... wait for it because this is key ... being OKAY with it. Building yourself up only to be let down can have a devastating effect on some people. However, if you train yourself through negative visualization to adopt more of a whatevs attitude, you'll be less stressed, surprisingly more confident and, if the worst happens, find the crash to be much gentler.
@Alejoacuna2 жыл бұрын
This is actually a good one. Its a cliche to say that failure builds character, but it also helps to keep you calmer and confident. It is also a reminder that if this was not the one, then there will be another opportunity and we all just have to accept that; keep moving forward no matter what

After 22 years of experience as a Software Programmer, I had enough, I'm sick, tired, truly disappointed of keep going through this endless nightmare of technical interviews, it has become humiliating. I look aside and I see all my ex-colleagues from High School going to the top of their careers, even those who were truly idiots while I still battling in this endless nightmare. It's not the career I blame, in fact I love coding, but I think the market is a nightmare and I won't recommend anyone to go over this. Seriously, this has destroyed my life, see what the author of that book "Cracking the Codeing Interview" on the 2nd and 3rd paragraph! Sometimes I remember interviews that I would be able to go back in time and have the opportunity to make it different way, I've would never be able to pass it. The outcome is: you can't grow up professionaly this way, you can't dedicate a life to something that add roadblocks any single time in front of you. I read all comments from people quite excited about getting an interview, yeah yeah, I was there before. But you're not going to be young forever my friends, there will be a time when you realize you don't have the same energy in your body and you still have to make a living and pay bills that's when you'll end agreeing with me.

It is baffling to me that this style of interview is used for candidates that already have some work experience. Accomplishments at prior jobs should be more than sufficient "proof of ability."
@henrypl3605 жыл бұрын
@@jonathannellis I've been saying that for months, experience is more valuable. Most of these problems they make you solve are not real world problems, they say nothing about my ability to make a mobile application. Code readability, how you structure a project, efficiency, meeting deadlines, etc. are better ways to judge a developer than a damn fizz buzz coding problem... how are people freaking judging my ability to contribute to a web or mobile application by giving me the fizz buzz "challenge". It's ridiculous. I prefer a coding assignment related to a real problem the devs are having in the company.
@ChipChopChippy5 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons that many people go into software development as a career is because we're naturally shy/introverted etc. I can write code (and I think I'm pretty good at it) and over the years I've become proficient at working in teams and dealing with eg business sponsors - sure the first couple of months I crap myself every day before work, and literally spend every minute in a state of permanent anxiety. But....when it comes applying for new jobs it's a nightmare. Employers can't understand why someone who's CV looks so good speaks nonsense and seemingly can't write a line of code - and of course they can no longer ask former employers about me, as telling the truth could/would open themselves up to potential lawsuits. So all they can say is "he/she worked here for x months/years" So JournalistCR - I'm with you all the way!
@MrYouBitchh5 жыл бұрын
Not saying any of you guys are wrong, but technical interviews are often the only way to stop bullshitters. A really good BSer can fluff up their resume, talk the talk, and fake their coding assignments to get a job. What they can't do is fake the technical interviews. Unfortunately, this puts people who are introverted or prone to anxiety at disadvantage. All I can say is practice. Also, years of experience doesn't mean jack. I know people who've been developers for years and their coding skills aren't great. I wonder how they keep their jobs.

Sometimes I just wonder why not send a challenge to the candidate based on the stack that the company uses rather than ask some coding challenges within an hour or so. I think building something real gives so much more insight about the candidate's potential and thought process rather than implementing algorithms that you're probably not going to use in a daily basis, I know it' not true for some cases and this "coding challenges" are meant to see how you solve problems but I truly think (and I see this working where I work) building something real is the way to go when comes to "see what a developer is capable of" and you couldo also bring them over to explain how and why their decisions were made. Anyway great video :)

I totally get this, but it's a trade-off I guess but I rather do an assignment that really will show if I am prepared (or close to be prepared) for the job rather than solving some coding challenges... but also as the guy pointed out in the comment above.. it does take too much time... the entire process until I got the job was more than a month!

cause people will bring in all their friends to work on a project. I definitely know people who would invite all their friends (and that would include some ML Engineer, some Full stack Dev, some SW Architecture God etc.) and have them hack together a SUPER amazing project in 24 hours and give them a decisive advantage over someone who did it on their own.

I have read this in a number of places online, "CCI will get you through the phone screen, but to get the job offer you will need EPI." All you really need is a good data structures and algorithms book for the big tech companies. There will almost always be at least one recursion problem (with or without backtracking), mainly because there is limited space on the whiteboard to solve any interesting problem with less than 20-30 lines of code.
@kp27186 жыл бұрын
Thanks, makes a lot of sense. By EPI you mean the book, Elements of Programming Interviews?

Could you give tips on how to solve leetcode problems? I am having trouble even solving easy ones. I cant seem to find the optimal solution. Also i am an intermediate programmer cs student. Ik the concepts but its hard to apply them and connect data structs togethers to solve problems. Like using dp for a graph problem
@ImTheBoss9144 жыл бұрын
What helped me to get better at solving problems is to first run the problem through my head and think of the solution as a human. So identify the problem break it into human thinking steps. Then basically translate each step into the way a computer understands. Now there will be times you will get stuck and you think like this is impossible, wrong. I want you to really identify whats stopping you, get very fundamental and try to pin down what concept or knowledge you lack understanding. Once you realize what is exactly stopping you from progressing forward, it becomes much easier to tackle the problem because you know what is stopping you.

I think asking how many ping pong balls fit in an airplane is a great question. It demonstrates one's ability to deal with ambiguity. What kind of airplane? Does it have seats? Can you use boxes or anything to store them? How well can the candidate estimate? How do they go about formulating their estimate? Being a software engineer isn't all about regurgitating problems from leetcode or cracking the coding interview.

HelloMayuko! :) I'm currently looking for my first job. I've been to like 30 or 40 interviews and I still don't have a job. Here, in Poland, most of the time during an interview all that I'm asked are technology specific (Java) questions like "what collections do we have in Java?" "What are differences between between ArrayList and LinkedList?" "What is the computational complexity of adding a new object to the ArrayList?". I think I've got some coding/algorithmical question like 5 times so far. Most of the time I've got an invite for the onsite interview straight away. Only 5 or so companies asked me to do some bigger coding task and send it to them beforehand, which means I have to drive few hundred KM for each interview. I hope I find a job soon as it starts to get annoying :(
