To those who look at this and get InstaStress thinking they need to do all this chemistry and buy expensive metering equipment, don’t. Your collected rain water will almost certainly perfect for your plants provided there’s no corrosion on your collection bins. For those who need to/choose to test TDS and PH, this is a great reminder not to assume that your clean rainwater cannot be affected in some way. We can be lulled easily into thinking “ah I know what it is” and getting it not quite right. 40x you’ll test your water and get the same readings you’re used to. It’s the 41st time you’re looking out for. Good reminder, Nina 💚🌸💚

Exactly, and thank you for summarising it so well in the comments. 👍🏼 Especially if there are longer periods of NO rain, and then the first rain is bringing down all the gunk collected in the atmosphere. The first rain here in Spain, after summer is usually a short drizzle, and that doesn't even clean the air out. Not good stuff for the orchids. When had the volcano erupt in the Canary Islands, that rain also was not useable... once it rains for several hours straight, then the water collected is useable and clean. Unless of course you have your container by a hedge, and well... collect Earl Grey Tea 😂 I hope that you are doing well, 🌸🥷🏼 that all your holiday prep is sorted and you can relax into the weekend with lots of great company... doing what Aussies do on Christmas. You can see that the clear water is the cleanest, but debris does enter my collection methods and that has to be monitored. My rain water comes out of the roof at 10 or 12 ppm in spite of the poops from the birds that sleep at night under the eve 🤣🤣 I also use a strainer and I add a cloth because it is not as thin as yours. Shirley, hi 😍💐 the drizzle is the 'dangerous' stuff, imo. I get that as well, and especially after months and months of no rain, when it drizzles, I have to remind myself to not get ahead of myself... it takes a lot to clear the atmosphere here, after long periods of drought. OOPS!! I've never "tested" my rain water for the pH. Usually, I put in one tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda in each bucket (3 x 5 gall, and 1 x 1/2 gall). This keeps away the "mozzies" and algae free. As the days progress, and more rainfall occurs, I look for the colour of the water. Sometimes it gets a little murky, but not for long. You see, I don't only use them for my orchids, but for the other plants as well (coleus, ferns, and other shrubs). If an when the water gets TOO murky - I use it in the other plants. Rains are less these days, so I need to use water from the tap - which has a perfect pH balance.

Lyn, hi 😍💐 with your persistent rain, you do not need to monitor the pH. After maybe 6-8 weeks of no rain, then the first rain should be measured, just to make sure that the pH isn't off because of the atmosphere being cleared with the first rain after a period of time sans rain. I hope to warn people that assume that all rain is good rain... it depends on where the collections receptacles are placed, and the extent of time between rain. In my part of the world, the changes are not only obvious to see, but the TDS differs as well. It was the most water that had come down on a continuous basis for at least 2 years. I'm guessing the Cymbidium mask was affected by the leca and residual salts in the leca, causing the high pH and high TDS (that leca is definitely clean now). My rainwater here can vary from ~35 ppm to 80+ ppm depending on when it is raining and what direction the rain is coming from. Rains coming in from the east in the summer usually have higher ppm because of Saharan dust. Rains from the south or west in the summer are generally a little lower (50-ish ppm). Winter rains, like today, are usually 35 or less. Now, I really can't collect rainwater effectively because I cannot use what comes off the roof. The concrete tiles themselves leach stuff and there is a sealant we have put on every five years and it is pretty toxic. Given the way the grass looks where the front gutters empty, it definitely isn't good for plants.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! That sediment is indeed from all the gunk that had accumulated in the pot. I am glad that I never got around to washing it out ... at least we can see what came out of the pot after it flooded while still in the mask. The color of the colmanara mask though 😳😅 oh... that sealant yes, I remember the smell of it in TX when they were doing it on the roofs at the time. I never understood why there were patches of grass that did not always look happy... now that you mention it, it makes sense! Our next rain is expected on NYE, but at 50% forecast atm, and then into the 2nd of Jan but not much higher probability. I hope to get more tbh. It is going to be overcast and horribly cold, so it might as well rain, right? Besides, I will need the water. 😬 hope you are doing well... I have cinnamon and ginger fragrance in the grow space and I did not have to bake anything. Except, I was 'baking' a FDK for 11 months, to get to this point! HI BTB 😍💐 absolutely not! If you have a bucket that you can bring indoors over night, it can warm up to room temperature and you are good to go. If you do not have the time for that, then you can fill a kettle or saucepan with the rain water from the batch (pre adding nutrients) and get that to a boil and add it to the bucket that you are wanting to use for your orchids. All you need as far as temperature is concerned is anywhere above 60ºF. It is not necessary to go any higher than that if your room temperature is not higher than 60ºF. You can match your bucket with your room temperature and you are good to go 👍🏼 Check the TDS before you use it as well. Depending how much it has already rained in your area, maybe there are still too many particles in the air before the rain had time to clean the atmosphere 👍🏼 thank you for watching this video, truly appreciate your support!
