Well winter has arrived here with a vengeance. Along with that dry air from the furnace running non stop. The spider mites have arrived again. I ‘m cleaning the leaves of my orchids and using a mite spray. Thanks for your advice. 👏🤗💕

Hi Shirley 😍💐 oh... for you as well? Same here! Single digits last night and no higher than 57F as from tomorrow, during the day. Ugh 😓 I am already chilled to the bone 24/7 it feels like and my body is telling me every minute, of every day, that it is NOT liking what is going on 🥴 flipping spider mites in winter... incredible to think that they somehow still show up regardless. Yes, it is warmer in our space, I get it, but come on now! 😣 hope that mite spray knocks them out of the 'park'! Can't be hosting unwanted guests during a time of year when happy season is in full swing. Which, I hope that your preparations are going well and are stress free. Really appreciate you watching during what could be a very busy time of year for you! Thank YOU so much 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Sandra, hi 😍💐 I love that the Pacavia bloomed so nicely this year. Now the 2 pieces in the pot are blooming size. We need a repot in 2025 with this orchid and if things are feasible, I will separate them. Vamos a ver. Spikes on phals, this time of year, are so exciting. I can only see one phal of mine branching on an older spike. The light levels have been far too low for 6 weeks during the storms. BUT, they are still alive and with that, I shall continue to hope for better days when I can afford to switch my lights on again and enjoy phal blooms. In the meantime, I will celebrate your excitement and anticipation of phal blooms to come soon 🥳 Kurt, coming in clutch for you! Happy days ... great news!! 🥳 I am doing ok. Have a lot to do that is keeping me from editing videos, but hanging in there, thank you so much for your kindness and support when it comes to all the surrounding issues! I appreciate you so much 🙏🏼 Hope you had a wonderful 2nd Advent with all the goodies that come with this time of year. Wishing you a beautiful start to the new week and thank you so so much for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

🌸🥷🏼Director Jose San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 ¡Buenas tardes, mi buen amigo y maravilloso ser humano! Espero que estés teniendo una gran semana. 🫶🏼 I hope that some orchid growers, who like me, depend on what mother nature gives during the winter, without being able to help / support their orchids to bring them through much safer, can understand what their orchids may or may not do because of the conditions. Vamos a ver. Just so happens that I had this orchid showing everything that happens / can happen during the winter and I did not need to pull several orchids to show all the examples 😅 thank you, gran 🌸🥷🏼Amigo mio, for being here and watching and for your priceless friendship which is a massive support to the orchids and myself! I so appreciate you 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Winter has already hit here it seems. Had 2 weeks of frozen mornings and didn't break 60 for several days. But have been doing my winter light changes and temp changes...plus winter feedings....tomorrow will be watering day, plus pay the bills. My Godson turned 14 yesterday, had 10 kids over for a sleep over, partay, and dinner. Mike & Natalie were kept busy!! 😂 It's sunset now and Fluff wants here chicken dinner...take care Nina...next time... 🕊

🦤🦅😍 You spoil me, Wingman! 🙏🏼 the temps here have plummeted as well. Single digits during the night last night and as from tomorrow, it won't get any higher than 57🥴 the cold is constant now and my body is giving me the middle finger all hours of the day and night. Hot chocolate is a go again (self watering 😆) Happy Birthday to your Godson! 'Big' number 🥹🥳 sounds like a blast was had. Cuddles to fluff and head scratches for you this time around 😉 (don't tell Xyliano) Thank you so very much for watching this video as well. Much love to you and your's 🫶🏼🐾❤️🌸

Winter in uk too and I thought pest will get a holiday ! 😂 I have two phals in spike , one Masdevallia which re bloom from the older spike ( the bloom seems smaller than previously, Im assuming is because of less light during day ) and my Encyclia Baculus have a sheath , I believe, forming . Thank you for this info , much useful!
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids Ай бұрын
😍Hi!! 💐 I am always astounded that pests find a way to get into our plants during the winter. I mean, during the summer, I get it, the windows / doors etc are open, my orchids are outside, but also in the UK, doors stay closed, and it is far to cold for pests to survive and still... they find the snug warmth of the environment where they orchids are and get a hold. 🥴 the lower light levels can be the reason for the blooms to be smaller in size, yes, however, on sequential blooming orchids, it is possible that eventually the later blooms will be smaller in size than the first ones that bloom on such a spike. I have noticed that, with my coloegyne which has a sequential spike. The first blooms are large and last longer, and the longer the spike grows, more blooms come and they gradually get smaller. So, perhaps there are 2 factors in play with your masdevallia. I will keep my fingers crossed that your encyclia blooms for you... love the fragrance of encyclias! 🤪 thank YOU so much for watching, lovely lady! I hope your week is going great 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Yes, it is very cold here. New Hampshire. Teens 20 and Thirty. Thank you for the information. I also have a small humidifier in the room with my orchids. I have dry heat. Helps with humidity.

Hi Lisa 😍💐 same here! Goodness me, the temps here have dropped to levels that are normal for January and February 😓😣 Now, I do not envy your temperatures at all. Mine are still mild compared to your's, and I am grateful for that. While the orchids and I are cold, I am grateful that with a lot of layering, I can attempt to stay warm whereas, if I were in your part of the world, I would struggle being able to heat the home to just stay warm enough as mine is 'cold' atm moment. If that makes sense 🥴 thank YOU so much for watching and for your comment! Humidifiers are a great thing to have when the heaters are on. They really do help take that dry air and make it into something that isn't going to be a save haven for spider mites, for sure!! I hope that you stay warm, lovely lady! Know that I appreciate your support 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Maybe a video that focuses on which cattleya species bloom from a dry sheath vs a green one would make a great reference video. One of my new cattleya hybrids' sheath that developed during the summer recently dried up, but maybe there's still hope. It's currently making a bunch of new roots and a new eye which is at the edge of the pot. I think im going to end up putting it in a wide terracotta pot so I don't have to divide it. It is the Rlc. Waianae Starburst 'Volcano Queen' from Akatsuka in Hawaii and the parentage is C. dowiana (34%) + C. elongata (13%) + C. forbesii (13%) + C. warscewiczii (8%).

@NinjaOrchids Ай бұрын
Hi Joe 😍💐 that suggestion is great, however, I am going to have think about how to structure a video with that information because I do not have many orchids to show which does what and who can expect what from their sheaths. I do not have enough orchids to make a video along those lines. But, I will take a screen shot of your comment for future reference and will let the topic percolate so that I may be able to be more detailed about which cattleyas do what and what to expect. 👍🏼 your Wainae may not push buds from those dried sheaths because all the parents bloom late spring through to fall, with the exception of the forbesii, which blooms within the timeframe of fall through spring. However, that parent is only 13% so, I am doubtful that it has enough of that parent in it for it to be the one that triggers blooms within the coming months. The strongest parent is the dowiana, so, usually the trait of the strongest parent will carry over to the hybrid when it comes to blooms. Dowiana blooms from mid to end summer. Also, as you said your cattleya is new, I am guessing that she has not been with you a full year? If that is the case, there is still some acclimating she needs to get over and blind sheaths are common in that case. Still, I would really like to know if your orchid does push buds before spring. Seeing as there is really no rule of thumb in the orchid hobby, the generalising comes from what normally happens, and then there are exceptions. Your's might be that...an exception and I would love to be in the know 😉 thank you so much for watching, Joe! I appreciate you and your time supporting my channel. Wishing you a wonderful start to the new week 🫶🏼❤️🌸

@NinjaOrchids It's supposed to have fragrant orange blooms which I think are only usually seen during summer. I got it in the spring and it's almost out of the pot already. I like how vigorous it is, but I don't know how long I will be able to keep repotting it until a possible division.

I don't have any bloom this year. Two were eaten by snail or slug. Can I repot cattleyas in winter?

@NinjaOrchids Ай бұрын
HI Daniel 😍💐 I am so sorry that some critters thought they needed your buds / blooms more than you did! That is so upsetting 😓 you can repot cattleyas in winter, IF they are actively growing new roots. If they are not, then I recommend to not repot 👍🏼 if you would like to have a refresher on seasonal orchid care, with a lot more detail as to what to do when and why here is a link to that video 🫶🏼 thank you so much for watching! Wishing you a wonderful start to the new week ❤️🌸
