Just one question: after oiling the bat, should we knock in the bat first and then apply the tape or the other way around?

Hey Lloyd! Thanks for watching and commenting! Apologies for the delayed response. Personally, I have always knocked in the bat first then applied any Extratec/tape. You can do the other way around as well, nothing wrong with that at all (though you may see some marks on the tape if you knock in after applying)!

How long does the natural bat take to fully open up. Does the sound change once its fully prepped? Get more pingy?

Hey there! Yes, you will definitely be able to tell when the bat is fully prepared. You will notice a change in both the sound of the ball coming off the middle and also the feel when you get the sweet spot. How long it takes depends on the type of willow and how well the bat is prepared during the knocking in process. It may take some extra time after the initial knocking in to get to this stage - but using it in regular play with an old ball will help too.

Yes, for sure. Pre-knocked in bats have eliminated some of the work but it's still recommended to knock-in the bat further prior to use.

Like the comment above, I would wait at least 24 hours. Also, after oiling - remember to leave the bat laying horizontal and not vertical.

My new Kookaburra Ghost comes with tape over the face and claims to have been already knocked. Does it need oiling,m

Hey Bundaborg! If it's a new bat with the protective sheet already applied I wouldn't apply any oil. You should knock it in more though. At the end of the first season of use, you can take off the tape, give it a quick sand and apply some oil then. Before next season starts you can put another protective sheet on.

Afew questions 1- is the tape and extratec essential on professional bats? 2- I also just got a new CA plus 15000 that usually says fully knocked on it. I tried to tap a ball on it and the middle got some marks so I think it’s soft press (tho not sure). Given this bat type should I still oil it and knock it in? 3- is there such a thing as over oiling?

Hi ZT! Thanks for you comment. Addressing some of your questions... 1. The tape and Extratec is not essential, just can help increase the lifespan of the bat. 2. If you are tapping a ball on a new bat and you see some indentations, the bat needs to be knocked in further. Even bats that come with pre-knocked in labels do generally need a bit more work before being used. Again, you could probably use the bat straight away but the bat would last longer if prepared properly. 3. There is such a thing as over oiling and you definitely want to use a very very light coat of oil only. Lay it flat after oiling and don't stand it up until dry. Over oiling will affect the weight of the bat. Hope this was helpful. Happy to discuss further! Thanks so much for watching!

I oiled my bat but I knocked in with a mallet before putting the Extratec. I’ve only done that for today (about maybe an hour or two). Would this have caused any damage to the bat? I couldn’t see anything in particular that looked concerning.
