Spring is here, like it or not and that means for most of us its time to hang up our boots and give our skis a rest until next winter. But before you put your ski gear away for summer and wheel out that bike, there are a few things you can do to ensure that your gear is prepped and ready to go for next winter. Then when that first snowfall settles you can be one of the first to be out in line for a chair. Not only that but these steps will ensure that your gear remains in the best condition and doesn't deteriorate, or succumb to rust over the summer.

If your screws are undoing themselves over the season then they simply were not installed correctly. Once you tighten the screw after it’s been on the ski that long, all you’ve done is broken the seal on the glue and allowing moisture to now get in easier (not that it’ll happen but it increases the chances). If the screws were tightened fully when the binding was mounted, then tightening them again like he’s doing in the video can also increase the chances of stripping the threads or beginning to strip the threads. I’ve had first hand experience with this issue during Dew tour. An athletes skis were having the screws tightened after the fact and it was causing his bindings to pull out of the ski left and right. DO NOT tighten your screws after the fact of mounting. If you feel it’s necessary, take the bindings fully off, re apply glue and screw then back in tightly like you normally would.

I was told by shops to not touch the DIN setting when storing for the summer, as the springs will be unaffected. I kind of argued this as Torque Wrenches work the same way, you need to unwind the tension after use.

FYI leaving springs under tension does not wear them out, its the act of compressing and releasing that does, e.g. loosening your binding DINs and re-tightening them between seasons will wear them out quicker!

Stomp It Tutorials no need to apologize, I was in the habit of doing that myself. Two places to look are christysports.com/theridgereport/how-to-properly-store-skis-and-snowboards-during-the-off-season/ and www.coloradoski.com/blog/how-store-your-ski-equipment-summer. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the advice is coming from the idea that binding makers don’t want people who don’t know what they are doing adjusting their bindings, and less about wear and tear.

It is interesting to watch that you reduce the DIN settings, and tighten the bindings screws to the skis, and also move the back of the binding while doing so. Do you have the bindings ASTM tested before you use it next time in the Winter to make sure that the bindings are still functioning properly ?

I wouldn’t recommend tightening the screws unless they’re already loose enough to turn with your fingers because there is a waterproof glue down there and turning it after it dries will break the seal. Adjusting the DIN setting will be fine though
